Krauthammer on Obama’s Military Leadership

Charles Krauthammer at RealClearPolitics writes:

Young Hamlet’s Agony

WASHINGTON — The genius of democracy is the rotation of power, which forces the opposition to be serious — particularly about things like war, about which until Jan. 20 of this year Democrats were decidedly unserious.

When the Iraq War (which a majority of Senate Democrats voted for) ran into trouble and casualties began to mount, Democrats followed the shifting winds of public opinion and turned decidedly anti-war. But needing political cover because of their post-Vietnam reputation for weakness on national defense, they adopted Afghanistan as their pet war.

“I was part of the 2004 Kerrycampaign, which elevated the idea of Afghanistan as ‘the right war’ to conventional Democratic wisdom,” wrote Democratic consultant Bob Shrum shortly after President Obama was elected. “This was accurate as criticism of the Bush administration, but it was also reflexive and perhaps by now even misleading as policy.”Which is a clever way to say that championing victory in Afghanistan was a contrived and disingenuous policy in which Democrats never seriously believed, a convenient two-by-four with which to bash George Bush over Iraq — while still appearing warlike enough to fend off the soft-on-defense stereotype.

Brilliantly crafted and perfectly cynical, the “Iraq War bad, Afghan War good” posture worked. Democrats first won Congress, then the White House. But now, unfortunately, they must govern. No more games. No more pretense.

So what does their commander in chief do now with the war he once declared had to be won but had been almost criminally under-resourced by Bush?

Perhaps provide the resources to win it?

You would think so. And that’s exactly what Obama’s handpicked commander requested on Aug. 30 — a surge of 30,000 to 40,000 troops to stabilize a downward spiral and save Afghanistan the way a similar surge saved Iraq.

That was more than five weeks ago. Still no response. Obama agonizes publicly as the world watches. Why? Because, explains national security adviser James Jones, you don’t commit troops before you decide on a strategy.

No strategy? On March 27, flanked by his secretaries of defense and state, the president said this: “Today I’m announcing a comprehensive new strategy for Afghanistan and Pakistan.” He then outlined a civilian-military counterinsurgency campaign to defeat the Taliban in Afghanistan.

And to emphasize his seriousness, the president made clear that he had not arrived casually at this decision. The new strategy, he declared, “marks the conclusion of a careful policy review.”

Conclusion, mind you. Not the beginning. Not a process. The conclusion of an extensive review, the president assured the nation, that included consultation with military commanders and diplomats, with the governments of Afghanistan and Pakistan, with our NATO allies and members of Congress.

The general in charge was then relieved and replaced with Obama’s own choice, Stanley McChrystal. And it’s McChrystal who submitted the request for the 40,000 troops, a request upon which the commander in chief promptly gagged.

The White House began leaking an alternate strategy, apparently proposed (invented?) by Vice President Biden, for achieving immaculate victory with arm’s-length use of cruise missiles, predator drones and special ops.

The irony is that no one knows more about this kind of warfare than Gen. McChrystal. He was in charge of exactly this kind of “counterterrorism” in Iraq for nearly five years, killing thousands of bad guys in hugely successful under-the-radar operations.

When the world’s expert on this type of counterterrorism warfare recommends precisely the opposite strategy — “counterinsurgency,” meaning a heavy-footprint, population-protecting troop surge — you have the most convincing of cases against counterterrorism by the man who most knows its potential and its limits. And McChrystal was emphatic in his recommendation: To go any other way than counterinsurgency would lose the war.

Yet his commander in chief, young Hamlet, frets, demurs, agonizes. His domestic advisers, led by Rahm Emanuel, tell him if he goes for victory, he’ll become LBJ, the domestic visionary destroyed by a foreign war. His vice president holds out the chimera of painless counterterrorism success.

Against Emanuel and Biden stand David Petraeus, the world’s foremost expert on counterinsurgency (he saved Iraq with it), and Stanley McChrystal, the world’s foremost expert on counterterrorism. Whose recommendation on how to fight would you rely on?

Less than two months ago — Aug. 17 in front of an audience of veterans — the president declared Afghanistan to be “a war of necessity.” Does anything he says remain operative beyond the fading of the audience applause?

Pajamas Media: Obama Wins Yasser Arrafat Prize

Artist critic, Roger Kimball of Pajamas Media writes the following article about the recent ‘achievement’ of Barack Obama, the recipient of the Nobel “Peace” Prize:

“Yes, that’s right, this year’s Nobel “Peace” Prize goes to Barack Obama.  The Nobel “Peace” Prize is throroughly dicredited politically correct coefficient of liberal transnational socialism.  Barack Obama was tailor-made for this dubious honor, just as Yasser Arrafat was.

Kimball writes: “The Times (No, not the New York Times, which is purring with pleasure, but the London Times is correct.”)

‘Rarely has an award had such an obvious political and partisan intent.  It was clearly seen by the Norwegian Nobel committee as a way of expressing European gratitude for an end to the Bush Administration, approval for the election of America’s first black president and hope that Washington will honour its promises to re-engage the world.

Instead, the prize risks looking preposterous in its claims, patronizing in its intentions, and demeaning in its attempt to build up a man who has barely begun his period in office, let alone achieved any tangible outcome for peace.’ “

Nobel Peace Prize Lulus of the Past 35 Years

Thanks again to PowerLine for the following article regarding some of the company president Barack Hussein Obama keeps as a recipient of this Leftwing gift:

President Obama has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize after only nine months on the job. It seems a tad premature, but is undoubtedly a token of the committee’s high expectations for what is to come. Obama’s five disciples on the prize committee are helping to spread the word that he has come to bring peace, not a sword. His recognition comes for giving the world “hope for a better future” and striving for nuclear disarmament. Ah, but of course!

Congratulations are in order. The prize will provide a fitting occasion for another trip to Europe, and another speech! In truth, however, the Nobel Peace Prize has gone haywire on numerous occasions over many years. Although it has honored some worthy recipients, it has also become a megaphone amplifying the voice of tyrants, rogues and reprobates. Consider, in any event, a few recipients of years past.

2007
AL GORE The award to Al Gore and the IPCC “for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change” fits in with a subset of cosmopolitan frauds, fakers, murderers, thieves, and no-accounts going back about twenty years.

2005
MOHAMED ELBARADEI (joint winner). He’s done such a nice job with Iran.

2004
WANGARI MAATHAI The Kenyan ecologist peacefully teaches that the AIDS virus is a biological agent deliberately created by the Man.

2002
JIMMY CARTER JR., former President of the United States of America. A true cosmopolitan, he has undermined the foreign policy of his own country and vouched for the bona fides of tyrants and murderers all over the world. Commenting on the award, Nobel Committee Chairman Gunnar Berge emphasized that the award was meant as a denunciation of American policy toward Iraq. “It should be interpreted as a criticism of the line that the [Bush] administration has taken,” Berge said. “It’s a kick in the leg to all that follow the same line as the United States.”

2001
UNITED NATIONS, New York, NY, USA.
KOFI ANNAN, United Nations Secretary General. Among other things, they respectively served as the vehicle for, and presided over, one of the biggest scams in history.

1994
YASSER ARAFAT (joint winner), Chairman of the Executive Committee of the PLO, President of the Palestinian National Authority. He was a cold-blooded murderer both before and after receiving the award.

1992
RIGOBERTA MENCHU TUM, Guatemala. She is the notorious Guatemalan faker and author, sort of, of I, Rigoberta Menchu. Like President Obama, she is a memoirist of distinction.

1988
THE UNITED NATIONS PEACE-KEEPING FORCES New York, NY, U.S.A. Notwithstanding rapes and sex abuse committed by the team in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and the Congo, still doing fine work all over the world.

1976
BETTY WILLIAMS, United Kingdom, founder of the Northern Ireland Peace Movement (later renamed Community of Peace People), who in later years repeatedly called for the assassination of President George Bush. How peaceful can you get?

1973
LE DUC THO (with Henry Kissinger) for the 1973 peace with honor bequeathed to the fortunate people of Vietnam.

Obama’s Plan to Cripple America, Empower the U.N.

The following article by Paul Rahe was printed at Powerline.com:

Hillsdale College Professor Paul Rahe writes:

Charles Krauthammer has an article in the forthcoming Weekly Standard that, to their great credit, the editors of that journal have now made available online here. Although it only says what should be obvious, Krauthammer’s article is nonetheless a piece that should be read in its entirety by every American.

Krauthammer’s point is simple and unassailable. There is, he argues, an intimate connection between the foreign policy being pursued by the Obama administration and its domestic policy. The work undertaken in the domestic sphere by what I have called “Obama’s wrecking crew” will, he points out, put a stop to the pattern of dynamic economic growth that made it possible for the United States to defeat Japan, contribute decisively to the defeat of Nazi Germany, contain communism, and ultimately defeat and prepare the way for the dismemberment of the Soviet Union.

It will produce economic stagnation of the sort that the Europeans have suffered from for decades, and it will eventuate in a collapse of the American dollar

This, as Krauthammer shows, Obama and his minions understand, and this they want — the elimination of the foundations for American hegemony and the crippling of this country. They regard the role that we have thus far played in the world as shameful; they are intent on dismembering the alliances that gave us our heft in the world; and they are not only appeasing our sworn enemies but openly, publicly embracing them and their agenda.

This explains the praise showered on President Obama by Vladimir Putin, Hugo Chavez, and Fidel Castro. This is the meaning of our attempt to install a dictator in the Honduras on the model of Castro and Chavez; it is the meaning of our recent betrayal of Poland — on the 70th anniversary of the Soviet invasion of that country.

It explains why Obama initially responded to the open theft of an election in Iran by professing his confidence in the Iranian government and why the State Department recently cut off funds for the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center in New Haven, Connecticut, which was collecting information on the imprisonment, torture, and murder of those in Iran who protested against the theft of that election (for the details see this post).

It explains the deliberate insults offered Gordon Brown of Great Britain and Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel, which I catalogued here and here. And, of course, this explains the speeches given abroad again and again by President Obama, apologizing for American behavior in the past. and signaling a radical shift in American policy.

It is for this change of posture that our President has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. And if you think that the United States is the principal source of evil in the world, you should vigorously applaud. My bet is that in his acceptance speech Obama will confirm Charles Krauthammer’s worst fears and my own.

Misinformation Regarding Medicare “Bankruptcy”

Going Out of Business?

A new ad goes too far when it says Medicare will be “bankrupt” in eight years.

October 7, 2009

Summary

A new health care ad from a conservative group claims that “Medicare will be bankrupt in eight years.” That gives a false impression. The program does have huge financial problems, but there’s no reason to think it’s going out of business as the word “bankrupt” implies. And the issue isn’t new:

  • A government report the ad refers to says the trust fund for one part of Medicare – hospital insurance – won’t have enough money to pay all benefits in 2017. Medicare’s physician and drug benefits will “remain adequately financed,” says the report.
  • Government projections have found that the hospital insurance trust fund would face a shortfall “almost from its inception,” according to the Congressional Research Service. But in many cases politicians have found ways to extend it. In 1970, for instance, the trust fund was expected to be insolvent in 1972.

The ad also claims that “some want to pay for health care reform with $500 billion dollars in Medicare spending cuts.” Actually, the House health care bill, to which this refers, proposes a net cut in spending of $219 billion over 10 years.

A “Quick Thankyou” to Prager Fans from Rep. Marty Seifert

Representative Marty Seifert, who joined us at our Mn Prager Discussion Group meeting last evening, sent  the following email this morning:

** High Priority **

Just a quick “thank you” for the fantastic meeting last night.

I want to commend you personally for giving me the opportunity!

This was one of the best groups to speak to: fantastic questions and thoughtful discussion.

Please pass this note of thank you to them at your next meeting and let them know what a great time that I had!

Sincerely,

Marty Seifert

(I am taking the liberty to respond representing those who attended the Prager meeting last night. You made us very proud as conservatives, hopeful as conservatives, and encouraged as conservatives that there are still, in the year 2009, in  these times of political, economic and social malaise,  rational Americans who still value truth and evidence in forming their ideas and policies.  May God bless you.  glenn h. ray, organizer

Obama the U. N. God of Peace…Wow “2″

Thankyou duff2beat Prager fan regarding the news that the UN Leftwing  peace gods had elevated America’s god of the Left, Barack Hussein Obama to the “Pinnacle of World Peace Performance, by crowning him Nobel Peace Prize Winner.

We live in an Orwellian world!

According to Dennis Prager’s reporting this morning,  Barack Obama  had been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize just two weeks after his inauguration last January, 2009.

The United Nations is another institution made disfunctional by the world’s Leftwing zealots.  Truth and reality don’t matter to the Left.  They invent their own truths to justify their political ends…..governing without opposition to create equality at any cost….the dictatorship of the worker.

For over a century, whatever society the tentacles of the Leftwing have touched, they have wrought division and chaos upon humanity in the name of equality.  all from  the  faith  the world’s romantic intellectuals  force  upon  humanity.

The United Nations is the world’s most corrupt institution now that Mao’s China and Stalin’s Soviet Union no longer exist.

If the United Nations really wanted to present the Nobel Peace Prize to a worthy recipient, Dennis exclaimed, “It would select “the United States military.  That would restore meaning to the Prize!”

The official response to Obama’s winning the prize was what one would expect from the Republican National Committee, Dennis added….”It reminded me that I am a member of America’s Stupid Party….while the Democrat Party is America’s Dangerous Party.”

WOW!

Guess how many days it took the Nobel Prize committee to select Barak Obama after he took office…

ELEVEN!!!

Voting for the award closed eleven days after he took office.

Barak is a God.
