‘Sustainability’ Coming soon to your neighborhood

I just received a report in the mail from the American Policy Center  warning of the dangers of  ‘Sustainable Development’.   Sustainable development is essentially the policy which advocates that environmental considerations trump human based considerations in any and all aspects of life.  It is top-down, state run, collectivism where antiquated and destructive notions of private property are jettisoned in favor of environmental concerns and dangers.  After all, how selfish and short-sighted it is to worry about a few creature comforts when the entire planet is in peril?  The Marxists of the world have found in the environment the ultimate victim around whom they can rally.  A victim who is ubiquitous, who is forever in need,  who can never be made whole, and can never speak for herself.  They use the environment as a whip to corral those who would exert too much freedom.  Sustainability advocates believe that private property is an evil which is used to create wealth only for a few.  Economic activity must be drastically reorganized in order to achieve a more environmentally conscious and socially just world.  Activities which are frowned upon by these collectivists are dismissed by being labeled ‘unsustainable’.  The label soon affixes and the matter is closed.  The debate is over without ever really occurring.

One of the many organizations advocating sustainability is a group called ICLEI or International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives.  It is a non-profit, private foundation dedicated to helping cities across the globe initiate sustainable practices.  In essence,  they take your money in exchange for telling you what you can and cannot do.  Over 1100 cities worldwide including 544 cities in the U.S. are to some extent taking direction form these unelected officials.  13 of them are here in Minnesota including Minneapolis.
