Death Panels After All?

by Steve Hayward   at   PowerLine:

There’s an explosive story out today in the Daily Mail over in the UK claiming that Britain’s National Health Service euthanizes 130,000 elderly patients a year.  This claim doesn’t issue from some loopy former governor of an arctic province; it comes from professor Patrick Pullicino, a consultant neurologist for East Kent Hospitals and Professor of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Kent.  He made this claim in a speech to the Royal Society of Medicine in London.  From the Daily Mail:

NHS doctors are prematurely ending the lives of thousands of elderly hospital patients because they are difficult to manage or to free up beds, a senior consultant claimed yesterday.

Professor Patrick Pullicino said doctors had turned the use of a controversial ‘death pathway’ into the equivalent of euthanasia of the elderly.

He claimed there was often a lack of clear evidence for initiating the Liverpool Care Pathway, a method of looking after terminally ill patients that is used in hospitals across the country.

It is designed to come into force when doctors believe it is impossible for a patient to recover and death is imminent.

It can include withdrawal of treatment – including the provision of water and nourishment by tube – and on average brings a patient to death in 33 hours.

There are around 450,000 deaths in Britain each year of people who are in hospital or under NHS care. Around 29 per cent – 130,000 – are of patients who were on the LCP.

Nick Eberstadt emailed me his thoughts:

The estimate of 130,000 euthanasia deaths is clearly way high—but it looks as if the number may very well run into the thousands annually.

Can we *really* be sure this will not happen in America if the new health care legislation is fully implemented?

The British case needs to be examined very carefully, I think, by all sides in the current US health care debates…

Over to you, Supreme Court.

Thomas Sowell: “Thoughts on the Passing Scene”

at  Investor’s Business Daily:

“Random thoughts on the passing scene:

Many people may have voted for Barack Obama in 2008 because of his charisma. But anyone familiar with the disastrous track record of charismatic political leaders around the world in the 20th century should have run for the hills when they encountered a politician with charisma.

What is scarier than any particular political policy or issue is the widespread tendency to treat political issues as personal contests in talking points — competitive skill in fencing with words — rather than as serious attempts to find out what the facts are and what the options are.

People who are wondering what to get as a graduation present this year should consider “The Passage of Power” by Robert Caro, the recently published 4th volume in his monumental biography of Lyndon Johnson. Its revelations of the cynical, fraudulent and vicious politics in Washington should counter the pious graduation speeches that young people hear about the nobility of “public service.”

The new French president, a socialist, says frankly that he does not like rich people, that “my real enemy is the world of finance,” and apparently he has plans for much higher tax rates on high incomes. Has he not noticed how easy it is for the rich to move to some other country where the tax rates are lower — or to send their money there?

For a long time, Democrats have gone to Washington to win at all costs, while too many Republicans went to Washington to compromise with Democrats. The rise of the tea party movement may change that.

Increasing numbers of people seem to have convinced themselves that they are entitled to a “fair share” of what someone else has earned. Whole nations now seem to think that they should be bailed out from the consequences of their own reckless spending by nations that lived within their means.

Those who favor huge cuts in military spending seem not to understand that our military exists not simply to win wars, but to present such overwhelming superiority to potential enemies as to prevent having to fight a war in the first place.

Some people who are belatedly seeing what Obama is really like are saying that he has changed. This is probably easier to say than admitting that you were blind to the man’s whole history before, and were taken in by his rhetoric and geniality.

Wishful thinking is not idealism. It is self-indulgence at best and self-exaltation at worst. In either case, it is usually at the expense of others. In other words, it is the opposite of idealism.

The visceral hostility of liberals against Sarah Palin is something that liberals themselves ought to be concerned about. After all, she is just someone who has a different opinion about politics and a different social background and style. What I fear the liberals most resent is their perception that she is someone who is talking back to her betters.

When Harry Truman was President of the United States, he had a sign on his desk in the White House that said: “The buck stops here.” If Barack Obama had a sign on his desk, it would say: “The buck stops with Bush.”

Does anyone seriously believe that short dresses, exposing bony knees, make women look more attractive?

In most discussions of the problems of American public schools, the low intellectual quality of people who come out of our schools of education is the 800-pound gorilla that keeps getting ignored. Such teachers cannot give their students intellectual abilities that they themselves don’t have.

Did we have to wait for the Solyndra and other government “investment” disasters to learn what economic nonsense political “investments” are? Reckless spending to win votes, or campaign contributions, from the recipients of government largesse is still reckless spending, regardless of what other words are used to try to dignify it — whether these words are “stimulus,” “jobs,” “investment” or whatever.

In liberal logic, if life is unfair then the answer is to turn more tax money over to politicians, to spend in ways that will increase their chances of getting reelected.”

Obama, Pulls Executive Privilege to Cover Plot to Discredit the NRA Gun Culture?

Yesterday, Dennis Prager interviewed an  articulate speaker and  writer  for the Weekly Standard.  Naturally, the topic was the Barack Hussein decision to pull executive privilege to keep the Fast and Fury Scandal on hold until future notice…….a Dickensian future when  all  the principals are  dead.

I am not a gun person.   I did well on the firing range during basic and advanced basic training when I was in the U.S.Army, but that is over 50 years ago.

My son, Christian, is a hunter…..I think exclusively hunting deer.    I can tell by his language when he has spent time  in the fall hunting with the guys.

I am as appalled as the next civilized person regarding the violence our America has to endure  these days,, so much of it caused by guns used by unfit humans.    I expect it to increase as the society furthers its decay to become ever more primitive,  more wild animal-like living on sex and violence for personal entitlements and satisfaction.

Guns don’t murder anyone….people do.    The ever advancing uncivilized nature  of our people is what should concern us all.   By entitlements, by far the majority of these people, if they vote at all, dead or alive, they vote leftwing…..for the ones responsible for creating  entitlement people.

Dennis’s guest was a guy named Walsh, but while driving my Ranger, I didn’t pick up  the first name.    Walsh told this story which is leaking around at places where people meet to leak:

What is being covered by the White Hourse,  is that  Attorney General Holder was given the green light by president Obama early in his tenure,  to discredit the NRA  people, the gun folks who defend  the 2nd Amendment  and therefore their right to defend themselves with a gun.  The public should be taught to demand such weapons disappear from citizen hands.    The White House decided to give the public cause.

The idea of Fast and Furious popped up.    Allow thiese weapons to fall into the Mexican drug dealers’ hands, the Justice Department would  trace the traffic (as if that would work).   Voters  would get so fed up with the gun violence that they would beg the adminsitrations to begin its action against gun carrying and owning.

The plan, it is said, was Holder’s, not the president’s.     Deceit, disingenuousness, and dishonestyand duplicitousness, are the moral engines  which drive this president, Obama, and therefore his administration.    But, in time,  the president as well as Holder will be exposed as the intellectual crooks that they both are……Not a good start for Obama’s reelection effort.

Below are a few reportings on the  Obama declaration of Executive Privilege……remember the blabbings he made during his campaign  four years ago that he would  establish the most open and apolitical  administration in American history.     He also claimed that his Father was a victim of British racism, and was a hero who suffered torture  from them.    IT NEVER HAPPENED.  Just another of the endless lists of Obama’s lies.

This lie about his tortured father was to become the basis for Obama’s hate of the British and the white race…….and America.
