Only 19% of Americans Polled Blame Israelis for the Attack of the Muslim Activists

I am not surprised at the following statistics from Rasmussen Reports as published in today’s PowerLine regarding the attack on the Israeli effort to enforce the embargo of weapons to its enemies devoted to the population’s extermination.

I do look at this glass as half empty.  But, America will be America.  It prefers to know as little as possible about unpleasant news  and learnings which have no immediate rewards.

From today’s PowerLine:

“It is remarkable how often Americans are able to deduce the truth about a news story, given how little help they get from the mainstream media. Another instance: Rasmussen Reports finds that by a 49%-19% margin, voters blame “activists” on board the Mavi Marmara, rather than Israel, for the violence that accompanied the boarding of that ship. The remaining 32% are undecided.

I suppose, if you are a glass-half-empty sort of person, you could say that the MSM have succeeded in confusing one-half of all voters.”

Poor Helen Thomas Is Fired For What She Said

A note regarding Helen Thomas.  Her position in the front row at the president’s press conferences has come to an end.

This woman has been a fool all of her professional life, but lived at a time when an empty-headed, mouthy Liberal female who had taken assertiveness training or had been born with its gene and would make alot of noise screaming victimhood,  would be applauded and regaled no matter how vacuous the mind might be.

This was the era of the beginning of Liberal Hate America frenzy.  Ms. Thomas will be honored for having moved  toward many female firsts…..because she had a big mouth at a time when female big mouths were sought and revered.   They were paraded around the country, from news program to news programs, news pages to news pages, night shows to night shows and more importantly, college shows  to college shows.

Those female firsts would have happened anyway and it is unfortunate for America’s history that a better woman didn’t  outrace this roadrunner for the honor.

From those who knew her professionally we learn she was a loud mouth  for a long time, but a Leftwing mouth  nevertheless, which, at worst considering her being 80 plus years for the past 30 years, made the scene seem very quaint and amusing, especially for Leftie politicos.  It’s quite like storing her as a relic.  That she seemed eternally young and adolescent in her thinking and mouthing buoyed her childlike romance.

She was fired….she didn’t retire as was the official announcement from her boss, the Hearst organization.   She may have been braindead for most of her life, but she was not pride dead at age 90.   She must hate Jews ever so much more by blaming them for  her professional demise, although she herself did earn the release.  That may be the punishment appropriate for her crime, but she should have  had to continue her public appearances and been forced to defend her foolishness.

I much admire Charles Krauthammer, who  on Fox News this evening, when his turn came to review her departure,  said he disapproved of someone being fired for revealing a personal opinion.   This very disapproval he uttered is one of the reasons I so respect him.   Freedom of speech is the most vital freedom of all.   It could be that outside of the world of politics, Ms. Thomas might be a relatively reasonable and  pleasant individual.

I love people who are ahead of me.  I am not so confident  of the those  behind me.

Dennis’ Favorite, Paul Johnson, Reviews Freedom and the English Language

Great Britain and the United States do not do enough to promote the spread of English, which thereby decelerates or even reverses the spread of democratic freedom.  There’s little doubt, for instance, that the hostility of the Muslim world toward the West is promoted by the failure of Muslim countries to develop democratic institutions, which, in turn, has been brought about by a resistance to the spread of English.   Even among educated Muslims few have read the writings of British philosophers John Locke and Edmund Burke, not to mention those of America’s Founding Fathers, which has lead directly to a lack of understanding of what the West is about, says Paul Johnson, eminent British historian and author.

Fortunately, it’s a different story in India, says Johnson:

  • In 1834, Thomas Babington Macaulay was sent to India as an administrator, and the next year he found himself president of the Committee of Public Instruction for Bengal.
  • Macaulay made up his mind that Indians — there were then fewer than 250 million — must be taught English and be exposed to Western culture.
  • Macaulay’s policy was adopted and as a result large numbers of Indians, especially those in the ruling, intellectual and clerical classes began to learn English.
  • In the process, they began to absorb cultural and political ideas from the West, especially the need to uphold and establish the rule of law and to set up representative institutions.
  • Since India gained its independence in 1947 English has continued to spread, and India — now with a population exceeding 1 billion — has maintained democratic structures and methods and free courts of law, despite what was once a situation of overwhelming poverty and many difficulties.

The contrast with China is fundamental, says Johnson:

  • Very few mainland Chinese speak English, nor do they have any conception of the liberal tradition that the language enshrines.
  • India is about to overtake China in terms of population and will also outdistance it economically and financially well before the end of the 21st century.

This article listed at  National Center for Policy Analysis especially caught my eye because of Dennis Prager’s reverence for the famous economist, Paul Johnson.    Don’t be discouraged regarding Dennis’  bad  judgment of  movies,  he  judges well regarding people he likes and admires…very well, and Dennis really likes Mr. Johnson.

One forgets the plusses of peoples being “enslaved” by British  colonialism over the centuries.  And we forget Indians of the Asian subcontinent speak English as their national language.  It was hard for the English to let go of its “Jewel in the Crown”  colony, India,  in the turmoil following the Second World War, but it left its language, without which India would have become a jungle of insignificant bickering  isolates divided by language and provincialism  rather than a growing  into a world economic and perhaps cultural power.   The British left India what it also left America, Canada and Australia and New Zealand…..a peoples persuaded toward  democratic government.  And despite the agony of  possible civil war which plagues Pakistan, democracy there, although struggling from time to time, has been either part of on the fringe of Pakistani tradition since its occupation by the Britsh.
