Contrasting Public Reviews of Prager’s STILL THE BEST HOPE

Prager’s    “Still the Best Hope”:   Two Reviews
 Review I
This review is from: Still the Best Hope: Why the World Needs American Values to Triumph (Hardcover)

This book explains why the American Value System is superior. In fact, this book explains precisely what the American Value System is. Of course, conservatives will read this book with great enthusiasm. Conservatives will nod their head in agreement and simply enjoy the clarity of Mr. Prager’s arguments. The intended audience for this book includes our liberal Democrat friends, relatives and neighbors. It is hard to imagine intelligent, open-minded and thoughtful readers of this book not being deeply affected by the ideas presented here. I believe that if every American who usually votes Democratic did read this book – the political landscape would change one reader at a time as the book is read and absorbed. I wish every member of our government would read this book. I wish every member of the media would read this book. I wish every religious leader in America would read this book. I wish every high school student with a thirst for knowledge would read this book. That is my dream of things that never were and me asking, “Why not?”

Review II
This review is from: Still the Best Hope: Why the World Needs American Values to Triumph (Hardcover)

Author Prager believes that the only way to make a better world is is through the American value system. This does not, however, include ‘Leftism.’ As for Muslims, Prager believes Islam can be reformed with American values. Nonetheless, ‘there are currently three (incompatible) ideologies competing for the allegiance of mankind’ says Prager in the Introduction’s first sentence.

That statement, however, is easily disproved – eg. China and Confucian values don’t exist? (Prager does subsequently reference China’s authoritarian-capitalism model, but dismisses it because ‘there is no ideology involved.’ Actually, China’s government is far more pragmatic and data-oriented than either Leftists or Rightists – that’s one of its major strengths. Regardless, its purportedly having ‘no ideology involved,’ an ill-founded statement because China obviously has different values compared with the U.S. about the priority of individual freedom vs. the common good. Further, Prager’s point notwithstanding, many nations are looking at China’s success as a guide – claiming it is not ‘competing for the allegiance of mankind’ is simply delusional.

Prager also contends ‘only Americans do not proselytize.’ Why then, are both Republicans and Democrats constantly trying to involve our government in the affairs of others, especially China, Cuba, Russia, Venezuela, and many others to promulgate ‘human rights?’

Comment:    I picked out the first two contrasting reviews I came across.   One was pleasant the other expresses anger and disgust.

Continuing, he tells us that ‘Leftism is a religion because those who believe in its tenets often do so as fervently as religious Jews, Muslims, etc.

How would Prager classify ‘Rightism’ differently when it just as enthusiastically ignores compelling scientific evidence on evolution, Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, Global Warming, etc. and mindlessly oppose stem-cell research, protectionism, and homosexuality, and adamantly asserts that ‘government can’t do anything right’ as a rationale for no-new taxes – despite obvious evidence to the contrary (eg. the contributions of public health greatly outweigh those of modern health care, winning WWII, putting a man on the moon, supporting research and assistance programs that have made American farmers the most productive in the world)?

The bulk of Prager’s book is taken up with his version of what Leftism and Muslimism mean, leaving only the final chapter to tell us why ‘The American Trinity’ (his version of Rightism – aka ‘American Exceptionalism’) is both preferable and infallible.

However, turns out that ‘American exceptionalism’ as defined in the ‘real world,’ is the theory that the U.S. has a world mission to spread liberty and democracy. It’s also funny to point out that this term was first used in 1929 by Joseph Stalin to chastise a faction of the American Communist Party.

Regardless, the sooner we stop deluding ourselves that eg. America is a shining city on a hill, God’s anointed people, and other fantasies, the better off we’ll be. Those needing evidence to do so need only look at our world-leading government and trade deficits, inability to get along with much of the world’s Muslim populations, world’s highest (and economy-weakening) health care system, floundering K-12 education system, deteriorating and inadequate infrastructure, enormous funds wasted on military, Homeland Security, and government surveillance of our citizenry, having caused the recent world-wide ‘Great Recession,’ and our paralyzed, bought-and-paid-for government.

Who are the Black Mob Teen Psychopaths and Sociopaths Running Wild in Chicago?

Mob attacks not about race?

(Comment:   The attackers in the following article are Black, young, very young, and likely already sociopathic.     They ‘maim , pillage and burn’ for the fun of it……    Since America began its expansion of wealth in the 1950s  over six trillion dollars have been poured into its  urban black, Democrat Party  plantation to replace the disappearance of fathers among  the black families.   What has been achieved is what we see in the urban American black plantations, whether Oakland, Los Angeles or Chicago.

The Obama Left suggests these populations  are entitled to yet greater taxpayer  treasure particularly at the expense of ‘greedy wealthy white Americans’ maybe even the majority who voted for Obama in 2008..

Please read the following article from Chicago to see what taxpayer largesse has accomplished in this community over the past half century……Where did the $7,000,000,000,000 go and what did it accomplish?

No one lets us know where it went, but we know what it has accomplished throughout the American inner city Democrat Party plantations.

The following is an article found in the Chicago Sun about some typical and frequent spare time activities:

Mob attacks not about race

BY MARY MITCHELL     at   the Chicago Sun times:

“I was fascinated by Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass’ take on the recent mob attacks in and around the Streeterville neighborhood. In his interview with the unidentified doctor who was injured in the attack, Kass asked if the attack was “racial.”

“I don’t think it was racially motivated,” the doctor said. “They were black, I’m Asian, but I think it was something else. I think it was about having fun because they could.”

Still, whether white people are comfortable saying it out loud or choose to keep a lid on their thoughts, a lot of them are wondering if they are being targeted by street mobs because of their race.

Several readers sent me angry emails, saying I didn’t point out that the attackers were black and the victims were white and that makes this a hate crime.

But these mob attacks are not as simple as beating up someone because of their ethnicity.

Because these were not the black-on-black crimes the city has grown accustomed to, that doesn’t mean they were hate crimes.

These were random acts of terrorism.

Police said as many as 17 teens between the ages of 13 and 16 were involved in one of the three attacks that occurred last weekend.

Frankly, I’m not surprised that teens who were apparently out looking for trouble ended up in an area where tourists, toting expensive cameras and smart phones, feel safe.

After several high-profile cases and an intervention by the Guardian Angels, teams of thieves have slowed beating up people on the L trains for their cell phones.

And after two brutal South Side mob attacks sparked a public outcry, police are taking teen mobs seriously.

For example, in 2007 a gang of thugs known as “Goonies” were running around the Roseland area beating up young people and taking their cellphones.

Dreyvon McCray, then 14 and an honors student, was beaten so severely he was in a coma for three months. McCray is black as were his attackers. In that case, a 16-year-old was charged, as a juvenile, with robbery and aggravated battery, and an 18-year-old was also charged with attempted murder.

A summer earlier, Ryan Rusch was brutally beaten and robbed of his cellphone in the Beverly neighborhood. Rusch is white and his teenage attackers were black. Because one of the teens allegedly told authorities that he attacked Rusch because he was a “goofy-looking white boy,” police initially investigated the attack as a hate crime.

Micha Eatman, 18, was convicted on the robbery, aggravated battery and unlawful restraint charges, but a judge cleared him of attempted murder charges after a bench trial.

The one thing these cases have in common is that they involve young black males roaming the streets looking for trouble.

Had the teenagers involved in the Streeterville assaults walked up on a lone victim in Roseland or Maywood, for that matter, the outcome would have been the same.

The mixture of idleness and testosterone, fueled by a disgraceful lack of respect for the rights of others, puts us all at risk for getting knocked in the head if we run into the wrong crowd of teens.

Unfortunately, the fact that fewer than three in 10 American teenagers now hold summer jobs is going to make a bad situation even worse.

As it is, too many teens have nowhere to go and nothing to do. And despite the fact that many of these teens have no home training, their parents and guardians allow them to hang out at festivals and concerts unsupervised.

Obviously, if teens haven’t learned how to behave properly in school and in the neighborhood, you can best believe they are going to act like fools when they are out and about.

So if you have one of these teens at home, and you are letting him or her run the streets, then you are running the risk that you are going to be footing a huge legal bill down the road.

Obviously assaults and robberies, not to mention homicides, are despicable crimes that occur too often in black neighborhoods.

But when a mob of teenagers beats up someone for sport, it isn’t about the color of the victim.

This is about a breakdown of civility that can spread like a disease. As long as there are so many teens that are not engaged in productive activities, no one is immune from the impact of that disease.

As someone who grew up in this city at a time when activists had to agitate just to live, work and play outside the black belt, I don’t need to tell you that these mob attacks make me especially ashamed.

Dennis Prager: “Democracy is no better than the values of the voters”

I had an opportunity to listen to a bit of Dennis this morning before going off to do some landscape gardening work.

Dennis reviewed his link to the old Soviet Union, one of the most depicable regimes ever to govern a peoples.   This vast nation, whose official name was the  Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was a Marxist tyranny, the kind which is usually, no, universally at the end of the road  of ever Progressive’s progress.

Americans today have a Marxist in the White House, Barack Hussein Obama.   He is somewhat limited in his tyranny because there are still a few obstacles which limit his dictatorial powers.   Yet, true to tyrants, he sees himself has the purveyor of all power within the United States of America.

Dennis’ quote, “The bigger the government, the smaller the people,”  is universally true.

In his discussion about the evils of the old USSR, comparing it to   the evils of todays President Putin’s tyranny, suggesting that gangster leaders lead nations into gangsterhood,  he came up with another catchy adage about democracy and values:  “DEMOCRACY IS NO BETTER THAT THE VALUES  OF ITS VOTERS”.

I agree with his sentiment, but in reflection I don’t think the statment is either true, or if true, is fair.

Of course it is my opinion, but when I was in the USSR in 1966 when it was still a first class nasty dictatorship, not of the Stalinis extreme, of course, but nasty nevertheless,  the average citizen was a much nicer being, a far less vulgar, narcissistic, fatuous, ignorant, empty-headed human being than today’s most Americans under the age of 50.

I was able at the time to speak to countless no-name folks of the country, people I picked out of the crowds for conversation and querry.   I hold them in the highest regard.

They lived in a police state.   Almost all had close relatives and family members who had disappeared over the past 30 years and many killed and sacrificed during World War II.    the people were distinctly decent when left to their own corners.    Yet, many became entrapped by the secret police to spy on fellow citizens……usually for their own self preservation or that of a loved one.

Except for the dead, who in Chicago vote regularly, the Soviet citizen  did vote, had to vote by government edict and punishment…..and voted for the only person on the ballot for each office as required by the Communist Party.

For those of you Prage fans who have never had an experience of living in such a vast national prison, I suggest you view the film, “The Lives of Others”.   No other film portrays  the tyranny of such regimes as accurately  and realistically as this post Berlin Wall German film made by east Berlin survivors.

Good, but imperfect pe0ple with outstanding personal values  voted for Josef V. Stalin……a population in a Marxist tyranny votes 90% plus in each and every national election or face the state police.   And there is always the name of only one person determined by the Communist Party, available  for the office one could vote for…..no write ins allowed.

The State demanded shows of voting loyalty on pain of punishment.   In my 1966 Soviet visit when I mingled nearly anywhere and everywhere,  adults rarely spoke in public.   They system was on the edge of collapse in October, 1990, the month I visited.

The rebellion had already begun in Kiev during my stay there.    While shaving in my room on the 11th floor my first morning there, I heard thousands of shrilling whistles blowing…….beginning a march of about 100,000 peaceful and well organized protestors against Communism headed for Party Headquarters.

During the evenings and all night long  of the next two weeks thousands upon thousands of folks rallied in plazas taking turns wailing in public while showing pictures and naming lists of family members who had disappeared or had been executed by the Communist Party of the Soviet Union with brief stories to identify their stories.

These were intelligent and well above average educated people…….but people educated well within the narrows of party controlled educations, entertainments, communications, and every other means of industry and learnings……remindful of Obamaland and his following 2008 to present singing songs to the great leader with a national press refusing to print anything beyond the Obama party line.

Gangster communities such as those threatened by sociopaths and psychopaths in  so many  American  inner city black plantations, were not allowed in Marxist dictatorships.   Gangsterism usually was confined to members of the Communist Party.

When a political party posseses all power, which is a goal among the Obama American Left,  it begins to possess nearly all of the crime.

Hence, Dennis’ saying “The bigger the government, the smaller the people.”

When Will Mitt Romney Discover He Must Lead the Conservative Crusade to Restore American Values

This morning Dennis Prager referred to the following article in today’s Wall Street Journal wishfully praying Mr. Romney will accept the call to restore traditional American values to the nation as a campaign goal:

by Neil King, Jr.    at the Wall Street Journal:

“A recent TV spot that ran for weeks in Virginia had all the makings of an ad touting President Barack Obama’s re-election effort.

“Virginia is growing strong again, and so is our future,”  gushed the narrator, adding that Virginians were now enjoying “the lowest unemployment rate in over three years.:

Far from an Obama campaign plug, tthe ad was paid for by Republican donors and narrated by Republican Gov. Bob McDonell, a potential running mate of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

As Mr. Romney hops among battleground states to highlight U.S. economic  woes under Mr. Obama, he keeps knocking against dissonant voices from his own side:  Republican governors, such as Mr. McDonnell, touting recent turnarounds in states that Mr. Romney has to win in November.

Mr. Romney’s message that the national economy remains sour is central to his core campaign argument that the president’s policies have impeded  the recovery, and that someone with deep business experience is better to set the U.S. right.

But Republican governors in states that will decide the election, such as Virginia, Ohio, Florida, Michigan and Iowa, have a rosier view.   While Mr. Romkney points to a feeble recovery, underscored by last month’s grim jobs report, the governors-looking to their own political fortunes-cite job growth, highter corporate investment and the rebirth of domestic manufacturing in their states.

Iowa’s Republican governor, Terry Branstad, is part of a contingent of GOP governors and party elders urgin Mr. Romney to re=tailor his message by highlighting the success stories under way in a half=dozen GOP-led states, even if it means diluting his gloomier national pitch.

While the Romnehy campaign could easily incorporate that message before the election, the competing narratives have led to some awkward moments.   When Mr. Romney traveled to Iowa last month, his campaign released a Web ad highlighting Iowans who were struggling to find work=in a state with a 5.1% jobless rate, the seventh lowest in the U.S.

“My state is seeing significant growth,” Mr. Branstad said in an interview, adding that he didn’t  see why the Romney campaign decided to highlight unemployed Iowa residents.   Ticking off a long list of companies that are expanding in the state, including Alcoa and John Deere, he said, “We are doing very well.”

Ahead of Mr. Romnehy’s Iowa campaign stop in Des Moines last month, Mr. Branstad said, he suggested that Mr. Romnehy put aside his jobs message and focus on the perils of mounting U.S. debt.  “Debt is the number one issue that people in Iowa want to talk about,” he said.

Mr. Branstad wants the Romney campaign to focus more on what he and other GOP governors ave done to cut taxes, trim state budgets and regulations, and, in some cases, to challenge labor unions.  He ticks off a list of governors including John Kasich of Ohio, Chris Christie of New Jersey, Mr. McDonnell of Virginia and Scott Walker of Wisconsin.

Mr. Walker, the GOP’s latest star rookie, easily beat back a recall effort last week with a campaign that zeroed in on Wisconsin’s job growth and strengthening economy.

“Romney should be saying, “Let’s do what Kasich is doing or Walker is doing or McDonnell is doing the the states where things are looking good,'”  Mr. Branstad said.  “He should be seizing that momentum and spotlighting it.”  Doing so, the argument goes, would help Mr. Romney make his own promises to trim government appear part of a larger conservative movement”………etc.

Comment:   One of Mr. Romney’s shortcomings is  although he has run for public office and won the governorship in Massachusetts, he is not by nature a politician.   He is indeed a business man trained  to gather as much information as necessary to make a prudent decisions.   He is by training a problem solver.    In this respect I admire him even more than someone like  Representative Charlie Rangel of New York who must have been born with a special gene group that has made him both charming and bright and speedy-quick verbally who likes people and wants to please them.   I have always been charmed by Mr. Rangel, as have so many in Washington and fortunately in Harlem.

Despite his shady this and that,  I like Charlie Rangel a lot and enjoy each of his interviews on television.   I am hoping Mitt will pick up on the Rangel gifts soon, the ones without the shady stuff, however.     Mitt seems very clean, intelligent  and likeable.

America is in crisis economically, spiritually, educatinally, and morally.    Mr. Romney nor his family  seem to be plagued personally by this American crisis.    What an advantage for his campaign.

Human Genetic ‘Gifts’ and the Marxist Obamarule Drive to Create the Single Sex

The Nanny state of Obamarule has been invading the western world well before Barack Hussein Obama ever arrived on this Earth.    It is not a coincidence that its popularity today is coinciding with the Age of the Feminist Fanatics  in the West which, of course,  has caused Obamarule.

While there still is a sliver of knowledge remaining within the Feminist Fanatic  dominated West, and there is still a sliver of personal freedom remaining in the world of Obamarule’s laws  of political correctness, let us review what is generally known, but censored,  regarding some of  the behavioral ‘gifts’ still possessed by the human male and the human female.

Through the millenia of the existence of ‘life’ which has led to today’s primitive-modern human male what, in truth, are we still carrying in our genetic order despite the veneer of modern civilization?    Who are we if born without this veneer?     How are we driven by the animal within us as creatures of God?

The “gifts”  given by Nature and Nature’s God to the human male create  a killer, a sexual predator, a hunter, a fighter, a problem solver, an explorer,  an investigator, a dreamer, a thinker,  a recorder,  an inventor, a musician, a poet, a farmer, a builder,  curious, driven,  a collector and a protector……among other features big and small.

Throughout  this same millenia, the “gifts”   creating the  human female begin with  the bearing and caring of  offspring  to continue the species,  to protect the offspring,  to put  order to that which is built,  to seduce to  compete for male attention, and to announce hysterically when danger arrives, and, if necessary assist in protecting their brood.

In these days of Marxist Obamarule and its university instruction, the human male is programmed to become female and the human female is programmed to become male in order to meet the requirements of the Marxist nirvana to create economic and therefore cultural equality for all except for themselves.

Under Marxist Obamarule both sexes are forced to ignore or destroy  the programs, the gifts  provide by Nature’s great chemist…..and smile about it and most of all vote the Obama way to continue the transgender experience.

Of course, civilization itself is a feminizing drive for us human animals.   Our sexual ‘gifts’ must be rerouted to serve well the best of our nature as God wills for the civilized.    More than ever we need that “God” of our millenium for guidance…….knowledge to determine what is classically  good for mankind.

Creating slaves of masculine women and feminized men under Obamarules, is likely, however, not a good path for our American future……..our males are still males by genetic code.

If you, dear reader, haven’t often thought about the above,  why haven’t you?     Most of the world is not feminised fanatically.   Instead,  it’s human males behave as unbridled males without civilized tasks to challenge them.   Filled with their genetic gifts,  they are on the march warring against the women of the West, both male and female.

(I profoundly appologize to the Obamarule folks for disobeying the rules of Obamarule political correctness in raising the above topic.)

More Tax Payer “Gifts” to Obama Greens as “investments”

Oh, goody: More DOE green-energy

“investments” on the way

 by Erika Johnsen     at HotMail:

“Tuesday, the Department of Energy announced that it is instituting yet another round of clean-energy “investments” that they believe will help to spur the economy to new and amazing competitive heights. Oh, DOE, you really are too magnanimous to so wisely spend our money for us on things us backwards simpletons won’t invest in by ourselves. …No, really, you’re too magnanimous (h/t the Foundry).

As part of the Obama Administration’s blueprint for an American economy built to last, the Energy Department today announced new investments that support American leadership and global competiveness in manufacturing. The Energy Department awarded more than $54 million – leveraging approximately an additional $17 million in cost share from the private sector – for 13 projects across the country to advance transformational technologies and materials that can help American manufacturers dramatically increase the energy efficiency of their operations and reduce costs. These projects will develop cutting-edge manufacturing tools, techniques, and processes that will be able to save companies money by reducing the energy needed to power their facilities. These projects are a part of the Administration’s strategy for investing in emerging technologies that create high-quality domestic manufacturing jobs and enhance the competitiveness of U.S. companies in today’s global markets.

“By investing in breakthrough technologies that can drastically reduce the amount of energy consumed during manufacturing, the Energy Department is supporting President Obama’s blueprint for an economy built on American manufacturing, American energy, and skills for American workers,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu. “When it comes to clean energy, our motto should be: ‘Invented in America, made in America, and sold around the world.’ The projects announced today will improve the competitive position of U.S. industry and help manufacturers produce more while saving energy, saving money and protecting our air and water.”

[Shakes head dolefully.] Please, Obama administration — just stop already. I don’t care that it’s “only” $54 million dollars (the failed solar company Solyndra received a loan guarantee of more than half a billion dollars from Obama’s Department of Energy); we simply cannot afford any more of these government-funded failures.

How many government “investments” and subsequent losses are we expected to endure before the DOE understands that the federal government is always and necessarily ill-suited to determine what projects are worthy of all of this “free money”? Because the government isn’t just concerned with making a profit — bureaucrats are concerned with good politics, and that’s bad. Their primary motivation isn’t getting a return on their (our!) investment, it’s wishful thinking about the way they think the world should work. If you’re not all that concerned about getting your money back, you’re not going to be super-careful with where you put that money in the first place.

Businesses already want to save money, innovate, and increase efficiency. If these technological endeavors were really good ideas that would improve these companies’ bottom line and enhance their competitive edge, they’d be doing them on their own. The fact that they need government money to get these projects going should provide a pretty significant hint about the wisdom of these so-called “investments.”

Here’s a nice kicker. Behold, the projects our esteemed, selfless bureaucrats selected for these “awards”:

  • Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. – Allentown, PA – $1,200,000
  • American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) – Salt Lake City, UT – $7,120,000
  • Delphi Automotive Systems, LLC – Rochester, NY – $3,700,000
  • General Motors LLC – Warren, MI – $2,672,124
  • Lyondell Chemical Company – Newtown Square, PA – $4,500,000
  • MEMC Electronic Materials, Inc. – St. Peters, MO – $3,680,000
  • MIT – Cambridge, MA – $1,000,000
  • PolyPlus Battery Company – Berkeley, CA – $8,999,920
  • Research Triangle Institute – Research Triangle Park, NC – $4,800,000
  • Teledyne Scientific and Imaging – Thousand Oaks, CA – $2,110,000
  • The Dow Chemical Company – Midland, MI – $9,000,000
  • The University of Utah – Salt Lake City, Utah – $1,460,285
  • Third Wave Systems, Inc. – Minneapolis, MN – $4,069,882

Hey, remember in 2009, when General Motors got a huge bailout from us taxpayers?

In addition to the more than $50 billion given to General Motors in the bailout, the Obama administration quietly snuck in a special tax break for GM, which allows the company to write off approximately $45 billion in post-bankruptcy losses against post-bankruptcy profits.

The result? In 2011, GM paid nothing in federal income taxes despite claiming record profits of $7.6 billion, the “highest profits in the 100 year history of that company” according to President Obama.

In fact, that’s not quite right. GM paid a tax rate of negative 1.5% on its record profits – less than nothing.

Crony capitalism, thy name is Obama.

It’s kind of funny that one of President Obama’s new favorite taglines is some variant of “Romney economics: They didn’t work then, and they won’t work now.” One definition of insanity is doing the exact same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, and these Obamanomics definitely qualify as insane.”

The Collapse of the American Family Wealth in 4 Years of Democrat Congress Control

Families’ Wealth Dives 39 Percent in 3 Years

from the National Center for Policy Analysis:

The median U.S. household lost nearly 39 percent of its wealth from 2007 to 2010, according to a Federal Reserve report released Monday, emphasizing anew the impact of the financial crisis and the recession on ordinary Americans, says USA Today.

Middle-class families took the biggest hit to their net worth during the crunch because much of their wealth was in their homes, whose values plunged during the recession and in its aftermath, the Fed report says.  Wealthier families saw a smaller drop in their incomes, but nowhere near as much impact on their net worth.

The impact a given family felt varied depending on where they live, how much they earn and what kind of investments they had, says Scott Hoyt, an economist at Moody’s Analytics.

  • Overall, median household net worth slid to 1992 levels after adjusting for inflation, wiping out the gains of the late-1990s Internet boom and the post-2000 housing surge, says the Fed.
  • The median family’s net worth dropped to $77,300 from $126,400 in 2007.
  • The wealthiest 10 percent of families saw their median net worth rise 1.9 percent to $1.17 million.
  • Household net worth peaked at $66 trillion before the recession hit in December 2007 and fell to $54 trillion in 2008, according to the Fed.
  • It was $63 trillion in the first quarter this year, but that doesn’t reflect the stock market’s fall since.
  • The Fed estimates Americans lost $7 trillion in home equity due to a housing bust that followed a surge in mortgage defaults after 2006.

Movements in the housing and stock markets suggest that middle-class households probably have not regained much of their lost ground since 2010.

  • The Standard & Poor’s 500-stock index is up 4.1 percent since the end of that year.
  • Housing prices have kept declining, falling 1.9 percent in the 12 months ended in March, according to the S&P/Case-Shiller composite index.

Incomes improved in late 2011 but have begun sliding again this year, say Gordon Green, cofounder of Sentier Research.

The Disintegration of the American Family and the Campaign

Romney, Obama must address crisis of U.S. families

by  Patrick H. Caddell  and  Douglas E. Schoen      at   Politico:

The decline of the American family is the hidden issue in our election. Sadly, neither presidential candidate is talking about our family structure or traditional values in any positive or constructive way. But we are now facing a crisis of serious proportions that affects all Americans, regardless of race and class.

Charles Murray details the breakdown of working-class white families in his recent book, “Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960-2010.” It amplifies what Daniel Patrick Moynihan wrote almost 50 years ago about the implications of the disintegration of the black family for American life.

This problem requires affirmative policies that strengthen the nuclear family, enhance traditional values and develop inclusive social and economic policies. Yet both presidential candidates are now seeking to polarize on the basis of sexual preference, marital status or lifestyle.

We cannot achieve our national goals, much less reach a broad-based national sense of purpose, without addressing the issue of the family and the related challenges that flow from it. It is just not the Democrats and Republicans who have ignored the issue — our cultural institutions, the media and, in large measure, our elites have failed to address this problem, as well.

President Barack Obama has used his presidency only to be a governmental and political leader. He has failed to offer moral leadership, much less address the issue of the American family — an issue he successfully addressed in his own personal life.

Obama’s recent announcement of support for gay marriage was just his latest assertion of a Hollywood-Big Money-friendly campaign position. It follows his recent announcement that religious-affiliated health care institutions must condone contraception — notwithstanding the preference of those institutions or their leadership.

Yet the president has been virtually silent about the wide range of issues concerning family structure, education and job training, as well as youth unemployment. He has certainly not mentioned the high rate of black teenage unemployment.

Mitt Romney has similarly avoided offering a specific vision for America’s future — unlike Ronald Reagan. Romney has failed to suggest that his candidacy offers anything but a set of fiscal principles divergent from those Obama and the Democrats have advanced. In fact, Romney has said he is “not concerned about the very poor.” Though he tried to clarify his remarks the next day, Romney has not presented any comprehensive social and economic policies that could enhance family structure and benefit all Americans.

Romney’s support for traditional family values has been driven more by his attack on gay marriage and support for anti-abortion rights than any acknowledgement of the challenges facing families today. He has offered no new policies to strengthen and help families.

Both parties’ apparent willingness to ignore this major issue is disheartening. No one is discussing the fact that divorce, in large measure, is driven by the challenges families face trying to support themselves, their children and their aging parents. Neither party has acknowledged the challenges created by the disintegration of both black and white families, nor have they offered a pro-family agenda to strengthen and rebuild those families.
