Browsing through the listings of articles and videos at realclearpolitics, I spied a title, “United 232 and the Miracle in the Cornfield” and knew immediately the story of it all from 25 years ago.
I discovered the story of the miracle while watching television one night in London, England. The program was titled, “The Black Box” referring to the info box experts of air disasters seek to discover what went wrong. I was to fly to Athens the next day to explore that part of the world.
I think “cornfield” was also somewhere in the title of the tellies’ “Black Box” chapter of air disasters. It was an hour-long program including videos of the fireball explosions ripping apart the plane as it finally slumped into the ground with part of it driving into a field of Iowa corn, and the heroics of some including a guy passenger who singularly saved a child caught deep in the wreckage.
Pilot management was miraculous and other heroes include probably the entire flight crew. Nearly 200 were killed despite the miracle.
