Mark Waldeland sent the following letter to the editor recently found at the St. Paul Pioneer Press:
Raise the gasoline tax to pay for transportation infrastructure because gas prices are low right now and it’s the perfect time to do it? What a good idea!
We all know prices won’t ever go back up to $4 a gallon again. That was a fluke.
And just because elected officials played fast and loose with us where that transportation tax a decade ago was concerned doesn’t mean they’ll bait-and-switch on us again. Remember how it was touted as money to keep the roads in good condition for years to come? Oddly enough, after it was voted in, almost all of it was allotted to light rail. Wasn’t the stimulus money supposed to go toward bridges and roads? But never mind that, or that there was a billion-dollar-plus surplus of tax revenue last year that the Legislature frittered away faster than you can say this is how they keep special interest groups happy so they get re-elected.
I mean, we can’t expect that money to go for roads. Don’t be silly. We need new revenue.
So, yes, go, Gov. Dayton! We always know you’ve got our backs.
