My first college degree in education life arrived in 1956. In those days less than average students of study were weeded out and often reminded of the ‘rule’ of survival as a warning. However, I played around a bit, for although without my original approval, I in high school , then ninth through twelfth grade, was taxed with the brightest, toughest old teachers in the world, nearly all of them old maids.
Tuition at that university, The university of Minnesota one in the Twin Cities, was $35 per quarter the first year…..with three quarters the required. Perhaps junior year they were increased to $55…according to memory. I worked as parking lot attendant throughout most of these ‘learning’ years. After first ‘graduation’ I entered the army…..Winston Churchill had mentioned that “The most exhilarating thing in life is to be shot at”………….and added, “and to have been missed”. The statement intrigued imagination.
I returned for another round of degree-collecting…..colleges taught learning then, collecting which could help me pay for my family responsibilities. Tuition went up to $65 per quarter…..and students did get what they were promised…..a curriculum based upon learning knowledge!!
College fever has very much changed since that late 1960s druggie, feminist, black racist, atheist revolutions. Click and read, please.
