The West Could Have Prevented The Russo-Ukrainian War, But Chose Not To

BY: JOHN DANIEL DAVIDSON at the Federalist:

FEBRUARY 25, 2022

NATO US Army helicopter training

President Biden and our European allies closed every off-ramp for Russia while misleading Ukraine into thinking we would defend it.

Author John Daniel Davidson profile

Not every war is unnecessary or avoidable, but history might well judge the Russo-Ukrainian war as both, not least because the United States and its European allies could have prevented it, but didn’t.

The decision to go to war was Russia’s, and Russia bears ultimate responsibility for what happens now. But that does not absolve the West of its strategic incompetence and complacency, and it does not mean the United States and its allies are guiltless in all of this.

At multiple points leading up to the current crisis, there were ways for the United States and Europe to create off-ramps for both Moscow and Kyiv, to shepherd a negotiated settlement so that both sides got a minimum of what they needed, and some of what they wanted.

What might that have looked like? For Moscow, a recognition of its strategic claim on Crimea and the port of Sevastopol as the home of its Black Sea Fleet. For Kyiv, the promise of political independence and greater integration with Europe in exchange for territorial concessions.

The West should have also considered the folly and recklessness of floating the idea of NATO membership for Ukraine, something no serious person ever thought Russia would accept without going to war to prevent it. And yet as far back as 2008, the United States openly discussed the possibility of Ukraine’s membership in NATO, even as Kyiv still claimed sovereignty over Russia’s most important naval base in Sevastopol. Under these conditions, the idea of Ukraine joining NATO was preposterous.

Instead, for years now the West has encouraged Ukraine to take a hard line on Russia, with false promises that the U.S. and NATO would stand up to Moscow and defend Ukraine when it came down to it, or that Ukraine would become a NATO member and thus secure its untenable borders.

As the political scientist John Mearsheimer argued back in 2016, the West has been leading Ukraine “down the primrose path, and that the end result is that Ukraine is going to get wrecked. … What we’re doing is encouraging the Ukrainians to play tough with the Russians. We’re encouraging the Ukrainians to think they will ultimately become part of the West, because we will ultimately defeat Putin and we will ultimately get our way, time is on our side.”

That encouragement — false encouragement, as it turns out — made the Ukrainians unwilling to compromise with Russian or consider Russian demands that were not unreasonable, given the historically unique circumstances of modern Ukraine’s borders and the problems those borders have always presented.

What’s more, the West’s encouragement of Ukraine did not match up with the West’s policies toward Moscow. You don’t tacitly commit to defending Ukraine from Russia while simultaneously making your nation energy dependent on Russia, as Germany and other European powers have done over the past decade, or flood your financial sector with billions from Russian oligarchs, as London has done.

The Biden administration not only encouraged European energy dependence on Russia (by waiving sanctions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline last May) but substantially contributed to it by reversing the Trump administration’s achievement of U.S. energy independence. As my colleague Tristan Justice explains, President Biden’s energy policies have taken away the ability of the U.S. and its allies to sanction Russian oil exports, a key source of the Kremlin’s wealth:

“From Russia, the United States still imports nearly 600,000 barrels of oil every day. In contrast, the Keystone XL Pipeline Biden shut down was supposed to transport 830,000 barrels at peak capacity. Biden didn’t sanction the Russian energy sector, because he couldn’t have. Trump could have, and probably would have.”

All of this adds up to an historic failure by the West. For many years, the U.S. and its NATO allies knew that revisionist powers like Russia and China were unhappy with the post-Cold War international order, determined to revise it according to their strategic ambitions. It was up to the West, and especially the United States, to ensure that those attempts at revision did not take the form of all-out war, either on the European continent or in Asia.

Already, though, we see Beijing extending a hand to Moscow, calling for negotiations that could at this point only end with Russia achieving its strategic aims in Ukraine.

Simply put, the West has not done what is necessary to preserve the U.S.-led international order, and now that order is unraveling in real time.

The Collapsing Covid Narrative is Being Replaced with Putin and Ukraine

By Vasko Kohlmayer at American Thinker:

Game-changing news has emerged out of Iceland.

As of this week, Iceland is the first country in the world to completely drop ALL Covid measures. There will be no lockdowns or social restrictions. There will be no mandatory Covid testing and if you happen to catch Covid you do not have to isolate. There will be no vaccine passports and no vaccine mandates. Anyone regardless of their vaccination status can travel to the country with no test required. The unvaccinated will not face any form of discrimination or exclusion from society.

Iceland is returning to going back to life as it was before Covid.

This by itself would be astounding enough given that Iceland is in the midst of a massive Covid surge and posting record cases even as we speak.

If you did not know, the vaccination rate in Iceland is some 80% of the total population which means that around 90% of the adult population is fully vaccinated.

Obviously, the vaccines have done absolutely nothing to stop or even slow down the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Quite on the contrary, they seem to have led to its increase.

Not only has the government of Iceland decided to drop all Covid restrictions and vaccine requirements, but the Ministry of Health issued remarkable new guidelines on how to deal with the virus. The country’s health authorities have advised the Icelanders that “as many people as possible need to be infected with the virus as the vaccines are not enough.”

Do you hear this?

Iceland’s government now tells its people that it is good to contract Covid. In other words, Iceland’s government has decided to handle Covid through herd immunity derived from natural infection.

This marks the complete negation of the official Covid narrative which was accepted as the conventional wisdom by nearly every government for the last two years.

The narrative ran something this: People should try to avoid getting infected at all costs and instead wait until they can get injected with the hastily concocted experimental vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna and such.

Now, however, governments are increasingly encouraging their citizens to forget about the vaccines and instead go out and take on the virus with their own immune system.

What in the world?

They are saying this after two years of heavy-handed lockdowns, restriction and closures that have caused untold economic, social and psychological damage.

They have changed their mind after having conducted a global vaccination crusade that saw more then 60 percent of the Earth’s population injected with inadequately tested vaccines that have proved to be less than effective and that have needlessly killed what could be millions of people worldwide.

This is undoubtedly one of the greatest debacles in the annals of man.

There were scientists who advocated herd immunity through natural infection at the outset. Those voices, however, were ridiculed, censored, discredited, fired and cancelled.

Instead, one after another, governments across the world seized the false narrative and proceeded to impose a cascade of disastrous measures that inflicted unprecedented damage on the human race.

In the weeks ahead they will try to excuse themselves by claiming that the virus has changed and that it is less dangerous now that it was at the outset. This is true to some degree. The fact, however, remains that the virus never posed a great danger to most people. Its survival rate for non-confined individuals was some 99.7 percent. It posed virtually no threat to healthy children. It posed only relatively low risk to active healthy people of productive age. Certainly, the threat was not sufficient to justify wide scale school and business closures and other onerous measures.

Nor did it justify indiscriminate mass vaccination of children and healthy people with the dangerous and deficient vaccines.

These policies were a gargantuan mistake that cost untold trillions of dollars and countless lives.

Now that the false narrative is collapsing, those responsible for this debacle should be asked to explain themselves. These people, however, are very cunning and they are already in the process of skilfully diverting the public’s attention to another place with a new narrative.

Today they are all talking about Vladimir Putin as the greatest threat to mankind. They hope to inflame people’s passions so they will not notice that Covid has somehow gone away even though a short while ago we were allegedly all in danger of dying from it.

Now Vladimir Putin is the greatest evil we have ever faced. And as the added bonus, they will be able to blame him for the inflation, depression and other catastrophes brought by two years of destructive Covid policies.

The Covid-19 crisis was a government-imposed disaster from beginning to the end. The virus – which was created by the Chinese state in cooperation with Dr Fauci and his friends – either escaped or was released from the biolab in Wuhan.

The Ukrainian crisis is likewise a government induced disaster. The feckless Joe Biden, Antony Blinken and their globalist cronies provoked Putin by pushing the idea of NATO at the doorstep of Russia. This was as unacceptable to the Russians in the same way that Mexico entering the Warsaw Pact would be unacceptable to the United States.

Putin asked for assurances that there will be no more NATO’s countries on the Russian border. This was not an unreasonable request, but they told him to go home and pound sand.

We should not be surprised at Putin’s anger. If he overreacts, the ensuing catastrophe will have been sparked by the provocateurs who were needlessly poking the Russian bear in the eye.

Both Covid and Russia are false narratives. In a way they are one of a piece. The passions and emotions evoked by the latter are being used to hide and obscure the collapse of the former.

Black Lives Matter’s True Colors

By David Horowitz at American Thinker:

It’s been almost two years since the summer of violent Black Lives Matter insurrections and cop-hating crusades.  The actions of that summer inflicted $2 billion in property damage in 220 American cities, killed scores of people, and spiked record homicide rates in a dozen municipalities run by Democrat politicians and supporters.  This unprecedented eruption of hatred and violence was fueled by a racial hoax claiming that there was an “open season” on black lives, despite the fact that there is no evidence to support this claim, whether statistical or circumstantial.

Apart from affirmative action, which was given a pass by the Supreme Court, and despite the false claims of the president, there is no systemic racism in America today.  If police departments, for example, were systemically racist, there would be massive lawsuits invoking the 1964 Civil Rights Act, which specifically outlaws institutional and systemic racism.  There are no such massive lawsuits because there is no systemic racism in police departments.  Although the accusation of systemic racism is the main currency of the Black Lives Matter hate campaign — and, shamefully, of the rhetoric emanating from the White House itself — there is no factual basis for this slander.  None.

The time that has elapsed since the launch of the left’s racial witch hunt has provided ample opportunity to expose the malicious, self-serving criminal agendas of the Black Lives Matter movement.  These have nothing to do with the welfare of black communities, which have not received a penny of the tens of millions of dollars raised in their name.  Contributions to Black Lives Matter have gone to line the pockets and enhance the real estate portfolios of its leaders.  Meanwhile, the chief victims of the homicides unleashed by their actions have been poor black inner-city communities — with no show of concern by Black Lives Matter and its allies.

A week ago, a Black Lives Matter activist named Quintez Brown attempted to assassinate a Jewish mayoral candidate in Louisville.  Without any hesitation, Black Lives Matter provided a $100,000 bond to get him released within two days of his arrest.  It was not the first instance where Black Lives Matter showed its solidarity with political and racial assassins, or its support for domestic terrorism.  When a black assassin murdered five cops in Dallas, and the assassin was blown up by a police robot, Black Lives Matter founder Patrisse Khan-Cullors portrayed the murderer as a black-skinned martyr because he was “the first individual ever to be blown up by local law enforcement.”  She ignored the fact that the assassin was a homicidal maniac, and the order to blow him up was made by the Dallas police chief, who was black.

As an emblem of the Biden Democrats’ support for the anti-white, anti-law racists of the left, Biden recently appointed political consultant Minyan Moore to advise him on his selection of a black woman to fill the Supreme Court seat left vacant by the retirement of Justice Stephen Breyer.  Minyan Moore is a director of the Black Lives Matter Global Foundation.  Worse, she is a close friend and promoter of Kimberle Crenshaw, the creator of Critical Race Theory, which indicts America’s constitutional order as “white supremacist” from its inception and concludes that no American laws or institutions should be respected because of those origins.

To have Moore as the presidential adviser on a Supreme Court nomination epitomizes the anti-American, anti-democratic agendas of Black Lives Matter’s “trained Marxists.”  In addition, Moore has been a political consultant to the Clintons, Kamala Harris, and the race-hustler Jesse Jackson — an indication of how the Democrat Party has reverted to its roots as the party of slavery, racism and segregation.

David Horowitz is the founder of the David Horowitz Freedom Center and author of I Can’t Breathe: How a Racial Hoax is Killing America.

(And a further note from Glenn…..American Horowitz has been a STAR QUALITY preacher “to save our USA from the fascist Dems led by Soviet Style Deceits, Nancy Pelosi and Charlie Schumer”….from California to New York state…..where TRUTH HAS NO MEANING!

Byron York’s February 21 Washington Examiner column provides a handy “Guide to Clinton dirty tricks” falsely tying Trump to Russia. Byron’s column is triggered both by the recent revelations from the Durham probe and Clinton’s response to them as reported by FOX News.

The column does a good job summarizing information in the public domain (with relevant links) and breaking it down into three major dirty tricks. Taken together, with the involvement of the FBI, the FISA Court, and the mainstream media, I think they make up the biggest scandal in American political history. Indeed, its tentacles extend into the Biden administration. I want to bring the column to the attention of readers who have followed the scandal so far.

Should A Fascist Lefty, No Matter How Charming, Be Allowed TO JUDGE IN THE MAJOR COURT OF A FREE NATION! NO!!!

Biden Has Chosen Ketanji Brown Jackson for a Reason

By Elie Mystal at the Nation!

Joe Biden has chosen Ketanji Brown Jackson to replace Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court. If confirmed, Judge Jackson will be the first Black woman to serve on the nation’s highest court, only the fourth person of color, and the sixth woman among the 115 justices who’ve served throughout US history.
Biden promised during the campaign that he would nominate a Black woman for the Supreme Court, and picking Jackson fulfills that commitment, but people should understand that Jackson would have been the most likely person to replace Breyer under any Democratic administration, no matter what the candidate said during the primaries. She’s a recent appointee to the D.C. Circuit, an appellate court long considered a “feeder” for future Supreme Court justices. And she was a “finalist” during the Obama administration for the nomination that eventually went to Merrick Garland. It was unlikely that she would be passed over a second time.
Jackson will be attacked by the worst white people this country has to offer. J.D. Vance will feel threatened and worry that “hillbillies” with Yale Law degrees and venture-capital backing are being left behind. The Georgetown Constitutional Law Center will hold a symposium extolling the virtue of judicial eugenics. Tucker Carlson will warn that Black people mean to make slavery unconstitutional, then claim to have been joking when someone informs him that it’s unconstitutional already.

But Jackson has been the front-runner for “the next” Democratic Supreme Court nominee for six years for reasons beyond her race, sex, and educational credentials. Her strength lies not in the immutable characteristics of who she is but in what she’s done.

Jackson was a superstar coming out of the well-known Miami Palmetto High School, where she was a debate champion and student body president. She went on to Harvard College, and then Harvard Law School. After earning her JD, she clerked for a Bill Clinton–appointed judge on the US District Court, then for a Ronald Reagan–appointed judge on the US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, before eventually clerking for Stephen Breyer himself on the Supreme Court. Along the way, she scored big-time legal jobs at well-respected private law firms, and she could have easily had a comfortable life of getting rich while representing wealthy clients.

Instead, she bounced between “Biglaw” and public service. She joined the US Sentencing Commission, an independent federal agency aimed at addressing sentencing disparities and inconsistency throughout the system. She left that work to spend two years as a federal public defender. If confirmed, Jackson will come to the court with more public defense experience than any justice since Thurgood Marshall.

She went back into private practice after that, but in 2010 she was picked by Obama to return to the Sentencing Commission as its vice chair, where she worked to implement amendments to the federal sentencing guidelines to reduce harsh sentences for drug crimes.

If you are a person of color or a white progressive who understands that a principal failure of justice in this country is the disparate penalties imposed on white and Black defendants, then you should know that there are few Supreme Court candidates with a better track record on this stuff than Jackson. She was doing this work long before it was politically advantageous to do so. Moreover, if you are a “libertarian” who professes to find comity with the left when it comes to nonviolent drug offenses, it will again be hard to find a judicial candidate better positioned on that issue than Judge Jackson.

Not that I expect Jackson to receive a ton of conservative support. White conservatives will make ugly and baseless attacks on her credentials and intelligence, and throw around whatever other muck passes for legal analysis on white-wing television these days. But make no mistake, the reason conservatives will be against Jackson (beyond their racism) is her rulings against the Trump administration and in favor of democratic self-government.

Obama nominated Jackson to the District Court for the District of Columbia in 2012. Biden nominated her to the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit in 2020. And it’s on the D.C. Circuit that Judge Jackson has done justice upon the Trump administration and its cronies. In Committee on the Judiciary v. McGahn, Jackson ruled against former White House counsel Don McGahn’s scheme to evade a congressional subpoena for the testimony he gave to former special counsel Robert Mueller. In Campaign for Accountability v. DOJ, Jackson ruled against another Trump administration gambit to shield documents from FOIA requests. And in Trump v. Thompson, just this past December, Jackson joined in an opinion ruling against Trump’s cockamamie attempt to use executive privilege to shield documents from the January 6 Congressional Committee, a ruling that was affirmed by the Supreme Court 8-1.

It will be fun watching Senate Judiciary member and insurrectionist OnlyFan Josh Hawley question Jackson during her confirmation hearing: It’ll be like watching a bank robber question the bank’s new head of security.

Despite that, if I may risk making a prediction that will make me look like a sweet summer idiot if it all goes wrong, I do not expect Jackson’s confirmation hearing to be that hard. Her qualifications are impeccable, her decisions are mainstream, and her demeanor is serious yet charismatic. Remember, we’re talking about a high school student body president and debater. She can talk your socks off in a blizzard and make you think it’s your idea.

Moreover, there’s just no upside to the Republicans to have a prolonged, drawn-out hissy fit over the nomination. Yes, base Republican voters are fearful snowflakes who dislike women of color gaining power. She is a boogeyman to the kind of Republican voter who can only handle Black women if they’re serving up syrup. But once those views have been sufficiently surfaced by Republican senators, there’s really no reason for them to draw continued attention to a nominee they can’t stop. Jackson is going to be more popular than inflation or gas prices or any number of other bad-faith fights Republicans can pick with this administration. I think they’ll lodge their racialized complaints and move on.

And I think Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema will stay the course. The filibuster has already been removed for Supreme Court confirmations, so we don’t have to worry about Machinema’s justifications for unending minority white rule. And in fact both of them have been fairly reliable when it comes to Biden’s judicial appointments so far. For whatever reasons, the donors who control those two appear more concerned with policy than appointments.

Jackson already received 53 votes from this very Senate when she was nominated in 2021. All 50 Democrats voted for her, as did Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski… and Lindsey Graham. Graham—a sniveling hypocrite who didn’t give Garland a hearing because he claimed we were too close to an election, promised to do the same should a Republican nominee be in the same situation, but was proven to be a liar when he held a hearing and confirmed Amy Coney Barrett during the election to replace the president who nominated her–can of course not be trusted to do anything other than what he’s ordered to do. But there’s no objective reason for Collins or Murkowski to balk now.

Elie Mystal

Republicans control the court by a margin of 6-3. After this confirmation battle, they will still control the court 6-3, meaning this appointment does not affect their overall goals of destroying the rights of women, the LGBTQ community, people of color, or labor. The question is simply how racist Republican senators want to look between now and then. The answer for some of them will be “very,” but probably not all of them.

I believe, and have believed since 2016, that Ketanji Brown Jackson will be the next associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States appointed by a Democrat. My question has been whether she’ll be the only new justice appointed by this administration, or if Biden will ever come around on reforming the court and getting her some more help.

Lesson from Ukraine — Don’t Give Up Your Guns (or Nukes)

By Civis Americanus at American Thinker:

Ukrainians are being urged to arm themselves to resist the unprovoked Russian invasion of their country. The immediate question is, “with what?” noting that Ukraine has exactly the kind of gun laws the Democratic Left wants to inflict on the United States. Handguns are illegal unless licensed, and licensing is “may-issue” the same way it is in New York. It is also necessary to have a license to purchase a long gun (as is the case in Illinois with its firearm owner ID card), and authorities can exercise discretion as to who can have a license. There are at most thirteen firearms for every hundred Ukrainians, versus more than one firearm per capita for Americans. Magazine sizes are restricted to 10 rounds, which would of course delight the governments of California and New York.

Guess what, boys and girls — the Russian Bear doesn’t have magazine size limits, nor does he obey international norms and treaties that forbid invasion of other countries. Vladimir Putin is simply another Tsar, and I mean an expansionist land-grabber like Peter I, Elizabeth I Petrovna (“like father, like daughter”), Catherine II, and Nicholas I “the flogger.” Peter and Catherine are not called “the Great” for nothing, but they were great for Russia and not for Russia’s neighbors.

It is also to be remembered that Ukraine inherited roughly five thousand nuclear weapons from the Soviet Union. “When the Soviet Union collapsed, Ukraine turned over thousands of atomic weapons in exchange for security guarantees from Russia, the United States, and other countries.” The British prime minister, Neville Chamberlain, signed a similar scrap of paper with Adolf Hitler, and we know what that got him. Ukraine’s former defense minister, Andriy Zahorodniuk, said of the more recent security assurances, “Now, every time somebody offers us to sign a strip of paper, the response is, ‘Thank you very much. We already had one of those some time ago.’”

Israel, despite its legacy of immigration by Holocaust survivors who were disarmed by Nazi gun control laws, also has the kind of gun laws the Democrat Left supports. Perhaps Ukraine’s recent experience will be a wake-up call for Israelis as well, noting especially the frequency of terrorist incursions whose purpose is to murder civilians in their own homes.

The Chinese communists have meanwhile threatened similarly to invade a neighboring country while challenging Australia and the United States. North Korea is run by a nuclear-armed madman. This is a very strong argument for the region’s civilized and peaceful nations such as Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan, to tear up another “scrap of paper,” the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and arm themselves with enough nukes to make it unequivocally clear to the Chinese communist dictators and Kim Jong-un that the consequences of a war of conquest would be too horrific for any rational person, regardless of how evil he might be, to even begin to contemplate.  Hitler, Stalin, and Tojo were some of the most evil rulers to have ever lived but had Poland, Ukraine (as subjected to genocide by Stalin during the 1930s), Finland, China, and Korea possessed even a few atomic bombs with the means of delivering them to Berlin, Moscow, and Tokyo, the Second World War would have never happened. The United States needs to modernize its own arsenal to match Putin’s because Putin has made very clear his willingness to use violence to get what he wants.

The United States and Europe will impose economic sanctions on the Russian Federation, and rightly so. The League of Nations also attempted to use sanctions against aggressors, and even expelled the Soviet Union, but was clearly helpless to stop Nazi, Fascist, and Imperial Japanese aggression. Some members were unwilling to comply with economic sanctions that hurt their own economies, and the Russian Federation has natural gas that Europe needs.

Rudyard Kipling’s “The Gods of the Copybook Headings” is well worth reading, and it is absolute common sense.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.

They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.

But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,

And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: “Stick to the Devil you know.”

The Washington Naval Treaty limited the size and number of battleships and battlecruisers the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, France, and Italy could build. This was either circumvented through the conversion of battlecruisers into aircraft carriers (USS Saratoga and Lexington were laid down as battlecruisers intended to carry sixteen-inch guns, and IJN Kaga and Akagi, both of which attacked Pearl Harbor, also were converted battle cruisers) or violated outright

Tsar Vladimir’s invasion of Ukraine should teach the civilized world the following lessons.

  1.  Don’t give up your guns. If you have them, you should probably have more.
  2.  Don’t give up your nukes and, if you (Israel, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and maybe Australia) don’t have them, you’d better build them. If you have them (United States, France, UK, India, and possibly Israel) you need to improve them and build more up to whatever treaty limits are in place. The Chinese communists have been making noises very similar to those made by the Russian Bear, and they also do not subscribe to the international norm that the use of violence to steal somebody else’s country is unacceptable. Regardless of how evil their rulers might be, these rulers also are coldly rational and will refrain from violence if the likely consequences of backing anybody into a corner are clear to them.
  3.  Treaties, including those signed and broken or circumvented prior to the Second World War, along with “assurances” to Ukraine, are scraps of paper unless backed up with the prospect of overwhelming and devastating force.

It may be too late for Ukraine — let’s make sure it’s not too late for us.

Almost-president and former Obama administration Secretary of State John Kerry remains in the employ of the United States as a special envoy of the Biden administration. How special can you get?

MEMRI tweeted out the video below in which Kerry applies his perspective to Russia’s rape of Ukraine earlier this week. The New York Post devotes an editorial to Kerry’s deep thoughts. The editorial administers justice to Kerry’s idiocy, but does not take up the strain of idiocy it represents among the elites embedded in our ruling institutions. It is a continuing task with a high degree of difficulty.

The Russian Invasion Of Innocent Ukraine!

Zelensky: Russians targeting civilian populations, move closer to Kyiv

ED MORRISSEY Feb 25, 2022

AP Photo/Efrem Lukatsky

Just how bad has the Russian invasion of Ukraine become? Even the Taliban thinks Russia has gone too far.  In a statement this morning, the terrorist group decried “the real possibility of civilian casualties” in Russia’s attack, although they called on both sides to show “restraint”:

Statement concerning crisis in #Ukraine pic.twitter.com/Ck17sMrAWy

— Abdul Qahar Balkhi (@QaharBalkhi) February 25, 2022

The Taliban are hardly in a position to complain about civilian casualties, but it doesn’t make them inaccurate. Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky went on television late yesterday to accuse Russia of purposefully targeting civilian populations, calling it “villainous”:

“They are killing people and transforming peaceful cities into military targets,” he said. “That’s villainous and will never be forgiven.”

Mr. Zelensky said he had spoken with many Western leaders, adding that he had asked some whether they would admit Ukraine to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

“Everyone is afraid. They don’t answer,” he said. “But we are not afraid. We aren’t afraid of anything. We aren’t afraid to defend our country. We aren’t afraid of Russia.”

However, Zelensky did offer to discuss terms with Putin on an agreement to halt the fighting:

At the same time, he appeared to leave some room for talks with Moscow. “We aren’t afraid of talking about anything. About security guarantees for our country,” he said. “We aren’t afraid to talk about neutral status; we aren’t in NATO at the moment. But what guarantees and, most importantly, which precise countries would give them to us?”

None, apparently. The NATO project for Ukraine had been long dead, at least since 2014 and likely long before that, only no one bothered to tell Ukraine. There is zero chance that NATO will admit someone who’s already under attack, either; that would require going to war immediately, and in a position with dicey lines of communication at best. In fact, that’s surely one reason NATO dragged its feet on following up on the 2008 Bucharest Declaration, although the immediate invasion of Georgia was likely another.

The casualties on the Ukrainian side have gone well into three figures in official statistics released by Zelensky, but are probably far higher in reality. That includes 13 defenders of “Snake Island,” who gave a brave valediction to the Russian warship that snuffed them out:

According to a purported audio exchange, as the Russians approached Snake Island, also known as Zmiinyi Island, the Russian officer says: “This is a military warship. This is a Russian military warship. I suggest you lay down your weapons and surrender to avoid bloodshed and needless casualties. Otherwise, you will be bombed.”

A Ukrainian soldier responds: “Russian warship, go f*** yourself.”

Those were the final known words heard from the island.

All 13 Ukrainian defenders were killed in a Russian bombardment Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

“All border guards died heroically but did not give up. They will be awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine posthumously,” Zelensky said.

Worth noting: Zmiinyi Island is just off the coast of NATO-member Romania. That’s certainly worth watching.
