Putin Is Not a Defender of Western Civilization

To the contrary, Putin is attempting to destroy Western civilization.

By Brandon J. Weichert at American Greatness:

March 28, 2022

There is a pernicious belief held by many of my colleagues on the new Right in the West that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is some sort of defender of Western Civilization. Under his reign, Putin has made comments that would make many right-wingers swoon.

For example, on Vladimir Lenin’s birthday in 2005, Putin lamented that Lenin was possessed of many “bad ideas” and that his Bolshevik regime “placed a time bomb” under the Russian state.

Putin repeatedly has struck at the ideological underpinnings of communism and he has correctly assessed that communism utterly eviscerated Russian prestige and power in the century that Marxist-Leninism ruled Russia in the form of the Soviet Union. Putin has restored, for example, the Christian Eastern Orthodox Church to its pre-Soviet standing in Russian society. Putin has attempted to reclaim traditional Russian civilization after almost a century of it being eroded by the Reds.

All of these things make many right-wingers pleased—notably those who lived through the particularly frigid days of the Cold War. And, let’s face it, Putin has implemented extremely traditional social programs—ranging from pro-natalist policies to anti-homosexual laws that appeal to many Western conservatives (if not in practice, then certainly in theory).

Yet, all of that is a thin veneer meant to weaken and appeal to a sympathetic Right in the West at a time when the Left has fallen out of love with Russia. Remember: it was the Western Left that routinely carried water for the old Soviet Union during the Cold War. The problem the Left has always had with Putin is that he isn’t enough of a communist to their radical liking.

And that for most right-wingers in the West was enough to make Putin an appealing foreign ally. After all, those who (like me) believe there is really a culture war raging between the Left and Right in the West—between domestic cultural Marxists and defenders of classical, Western Civilization—were heartened by many statements Putin has made in recent years.

Here is Putin speaking just a few years ago to an audience in Russia, in which he castigated Western Progressives:

We can see how many of the Euro-Atlantic countries are actually rejecting their roots, including the Christian values that constitute the basis of Western Civilization. They are denying the moral principles and all traditional identities: national, cultural, religious, and even sexual.

This kind of rhetoric, especially that last swipe at LGBTQ+ lifestyles, is catnip to a certain faction of right-leaning Americans. For many of those people on the Right, they take these comments at face value because they are, by disposition, not plugged into foreign policy generally or Russian politics specifically. They can—and should—be forgiven for not recognizing that they’re being played.

To be clear: not being a communist doesn’t mean that Putin is actually a friend or a fellow traveler of the Right or Western Civilization generally. Paul Gottfried, far from a neoconservative anti-Russian elite, had this to say in a recent thoughtful piece at American Greatness

But it was Putin, not the neocons, who invaded Ukraine, and Russian military forces, not Victoria Nuland or the Wall Street Journal editorial page, who are murdering Ukrainian civilians. I keep telling friends on the Right who want to stress those “other circumstances” leading to Putin’s invasion that by all means let’s discuss them. But we should preface that discussion by blaming Putin and his military for the havoc they have wrought. They have behaved outrageously no matter how defective American foreign policy has been and no matter how repugnant neoconservative rhetoric may sound. Looking at babies killed and maimed in the streets of Kharkov and Mariupol, it seems to me that the blame should be ascribed to someone more immediately responsible than blundering U.S. foreign policy mavens or rabid neoconservative journalists.

In fact, it has been clear for some time that Putin and many who surround him are quite opposed to Western Civilization. According to Russia expert Jeffrey Mankoff, many of the elites who have ruled Russia since the 1990s—the siloviki—prefer warmer relations with the East rather than the West and believe that Moscow should put as much distance between itself and the West as possible. In their view, Russia has little in common with the West.

As former KGB operatives (well, there’s no such thing as a “former” KGB operative) and hawkish ideologues, the siloviki believe that Russia must remain apart from the West; that the West is an adversary and for Russia to survive and thrive as an independent entity it must create “strategic triangles” throughout Eurasia to balance against unwanted reliance upon and influence of the West in Moscow. For them, Boris Yeltsin’s regime had been far too dependent on the West for Russia’s own good and that is the thing, above all others, to be avoided.

Going beyond the reliance on the “Primakov Doctrine” the siloviki by and large are also sympathizers with “Neo-Eurasianism.” Created by an actual sympathizer of neo-Fascism, Aleksandr Dugin, Neo-Eurasianism is the belief that Russia is a “civilization-state”; an empire that exists apart, beside, and atop the decadent and declining West. So close has Dugin been to the Kremlin over the years that he has often been described as “Putin’s Brain.” While that may be an exaggeration, it is somewhat apt.

Dugin is infamous for having unapologetically said: “An important aspect of the Eurasian worldview is an absolute denial of Western Civilization. In the opinion of the Eurasians, the West with its ideology of liberalism is an absolute evil.”

Here is a video on Dugin:

Dugin is infamous for having unapologetically said: “An important aspect of the Eurasian worldview is an absolute denial of Western Civilization. In the opinion of the Eurasians, the West with its ideology of liberalism is an absolute evil.”

It is important now to balance these views with the views of many of my colleagues and friends on the Right. Why are we conservative and/or reactionary? The Right has been struggling for about a century to maintain some degree of constitutional governance; to preserve Judeo-Christian morality that the United States and wider Western Civilization was founded upon (the logic being that this was part of the roots of our democratic society today). Along withJudeo-Christian morality is the love of family, community, and therefore, country. All of these ideals are at odds with modern Leftism.

Not to sound too hackneyed. but the modern Left, despite its false advertising that it is “liberal” is extremely illiberal. From “cancel” culture to its deep and abiding loathing of the United States as it is and as it was founded, to an adoration of revolutionary Marxism (or, at the very least, European-style socialism), nothing about the Left is “liberal.” And that which Putin, Dugin, and the Russian elite decry in the West is far from anything that actual Western Civilization represents.

Much like Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution, the West has been hijacked by radical Marxists seeking to remake the civilization into something that is not and never has been. It is this thing that the Right rages against—and that the Western Right believes (incorrectly) Putin also hates. But, Putin’s actions are directed not only against us as well as leftist ideologues in the West. They are directed against all of Western Civilization. Putin’s recent horrific invasion of Ukraine is yet another assault on the Westphalian nation-state system that most Americans on the Right defend and support.

And, Putin is as opposed to democracy and freedom that undergirds Western Civilization as the Woke leftists are today.

And it’s strange that so many who purport to be “nationalist-populists” on the Right are at least sympathetic to Putin’s movement.

While Putin is a Russian nationalist, his nationalism is not equivalent to the nationalism that many on the new Right in America and throughout the West claim to support. A good definition of “nationalism” as most American Rightists understand it may be found (however sloppily) in former President Donald Trump’s definition of the word from 2018. Drawing comparisons between his brand of nationalism and globalism, Trump said:

A globalist is a person that wants the globe to do well, frankly, not caring about our country very much  . . . I’m a nationalist . . . I love our country, and our country has taken second-fiddle, we’re giving all of our money, all of our wealth to other countries and then they don’t treat us properly.

While rough, this statement gels with what most on the American Right believe about “nationalism.” Yet, the nationalism that Putin practices does not comport with this definition. What’s more, Putin is an imperialist in a way that most American right-wingers would abhor—notably those who were strongly opposed to the Iraq War in 2003. As I’ve written at the Asia Times, Putin’s recent invasion of Ukraine is essentially his version of George W. Bush’s foolish war of choice in Iraq. We on the new Right have little in common, therefore, with Putinism and should shun him and his ideas at every turn.

This, then, gets us to the religious element of Putinism.

A purported champion of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, the official religion of most Russians since the founding of the Kievan Rus, Putin has used the Eastern Orthodox Church in Russia as a cudgel against his reputed enemies. What’s more, he has co-opted so much of the church in Russia that the Russian side of the Eastern Orthodox Church acts as a gun-running entity for Russia throughout Eurasia—in Georgia, for example, Russian Eastern Orthodox churches have been used to hide weapons and the religion has been used by Russian intelligence services as a cover for their agents in foreign countries. It’s become such an organ of the state that the Greek Eastern Orthodox Church has renounced their Russian co-religionists in the wake of the despicable Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Putin uses the Eastern Orthodox faith the way Osama bin Laden used the Islamic faith: as a tool for furthering his own political ambitions. Many are being duped and abused by these reprehensible, wholly un-Christian practices.

Setting that internal Eastern Orthodox squabble aside, it’s imperative to understand the danger of anyone on the American Right supporting or sympathizing with Putin’s ideology. After all, a majority of the American Right are Roman Catholics. While Christians both, there are stark theological differences between Catholics and Orthodox Christians—especially with those in Russia. And for the Catholic community of Ukraine, should Putin prevail there and occupy the country, they can expect horrific treatment by Putin’s regime.

Those on the new Right who aren’t Catholic are likely Baptist or Evangelical. Again, these sects of Christianity have little in common with the Russian version of Eastern Orthodox Christianity and it makes little sense for these elements to be combining with—or even being sympathetic toward—the Putin-dominated Russian Eastern Orthodox Church.

Lastly, the claim that Putin is some kind of defender of Christianity falls flat when one considers the (unconfirmed) reports that Putin is deploying Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) and Syrian fighters belonging to Bashar al-Assad’s military into Ukraine. Here are two groups of non-Christians who are violently opposed to Christianity and all of its tenets. They are being sent to a European, Christian state, Ukraine. Putin is sending them there precisely because so many of his own Russian troops are performing poorly in combat—partly because of many of the Russian troops’ antipathy to killing or harming their fellow Slavic Christians—and he correctly believes that Muslim troops from Iran and Syria will have few scruples about doing what must be done to pacify the recalcitrant Ukrainians.

Who reading this believes that the Islamist fighters Putin is asking Tehran and Damascus to send up to Ukraine will treat the Ukrainian people with any dignity? Who believes that the Christian women—the mothers of the Christian people—will be left unmolested by such elements? What’s more, once ensconced in Ukraine, whatever the final result, who believes these Islamist forces will return home?

Remember, Putin made great political hay throughout the 2010s by chastising the European Union’s immigration policies; arguing that Germany’s Angela Merkel and her fellow European leaders were leading Western Civilization to its ruin by allowing so many non-Western Muslims to migrate to their lands. Yet, here we have Putin not only encouraging such migration but encouraging the migration of openly militant Islamist elements to maim, terrorize, torture, rape, and kill fellow Christians in Ukraine.

Some defender of Christian values!

All of this is to say that there’s little in common between the objectives of Putinism and the American Right. Yet, bizarrely, so many on the Right today are attempting to defend Putin and insist that his ways are the ways of our movement. They are not. And Putin is not only opposed to the things that the American Right supports, he actively seeks to create a new world order in which the very values the American Right is struggling to defend are destroyed.

Based on his actions, his rhetoric, and his associations with men like Aleksandr Dugin, Vladimir Putin is no defender of Western civilization. To the contrary, he is attempting to destroy Western civilization. And he just might get what he wants.

Did Russia attempt to poison Ukrainian members of a peace delegation including a Russian oligarch?

JOHN SEXTON Mar 28, 2022 3:20 PM ET

 Share  Tweet

Russian opponents of President Putin have a way of falling out of windows and also of suddenly being poisoned with mysterious substances. It happened to former spy Sergei Skripal in 2018. It happened to opposition leader Alexi Navalny in 2020. And now, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal it happened to a Russian oligarch and members of a Ukrainian peace delegation earlier this month. Bellingcat has confirmed the details.

Abramovich, along with another Russian entrepreneur, had taken part in the negotiations alongside Ukraine’s MP Rustem Umerov. The negotiation round on the afternoon of 3 March took place on Ukrainian territory, and lasted until about 10 pm.

— Bellingcat (@bellingcat) March 28, 2022

The next day the group of negotiators drove from Kyiv to Lviv on the way to Poland and then Istanbul, to continue informal negotiations with the Russian side. A Bellingcat investigator was asked to help provide an examination by chemical weapons specialists.

— Bellingcat (@bellingcat) March 28, 2022

Roman Abramovich is a Russian oligarch who is currently on the sanctions list because of his close ties to Putin. He’s the owner of the Chelsea soccer team and was recently ordered to sell the team by the Premier League. So the first surprise in this report is that Abramovich made two trips to Ukraine to participate in peace talks as a kind of mediator.

One of more surprising things about this story is that Abramovich has been to Kyiv twice, and that it was kept fully under the radar. I suppose he had good enough security provided by the Ukrainians he wasn’t stopped at the 300 armed-volunteer-manned checkpoints on the way

— Shaun Walker (@shaunwalker7) March 28, 2022

But based on the reports out now, there’s no doubt that this wasn’t just a random case of food poisoning. The symptoms including peeling skin and in Abramovich’s case temporary blindness.

A source with direct knowledge has just confirmed to me the WSJ/Bellingcat reports that Abramovich suffered symptoms of poisoning. “Roman lost his sight for several hours” and was treated in Turkey, the source said.

— Shaun Walker (@shaunwalker7) March 28, 2022

Through a spokesman, Abramovich has confirmed the poisoning to the BBC, though details of the symptoms were left out:

The Wall Street Journal reported claims the alleged poisoning was orchestrated by hardliners in Russia who wanted to sabotage the talks.

The conditions of Mr Abramovich and the Ukrainian negotiators, who include Ukrainian MP Rustem Umerov, have improved since the incident on 3 March, the paper quoted sources as saying.

A source close to Mr Abramovich told the BBC he had suffered symptoms of suspected poisoning. They said he had now recovered and was continuing with negotiations to try and end the war in Ukraine.

Sky News reports this was apparently an attempt to scare not to kill, though the exact method of poisoning is still unknown.

The investigative website said it consulted with chemical weapons experts, who concluded the symptoms “are most likely the result of intentional poisoning with an undefined chemical weapon”.

Bellingcat added: “An alternative less likely hypothesis was use of microwave irradiation. The symptoms gradually subsided in the course of the following week.

“The experts said the dosage and type of toxin used was likely insufficient to cause life-threatening damage, and most likely was intended to scare the victims as opposed to cause permanent damage

According to the Moscow Times, Bellingcat wasn’t able to get samples from the member of the delegation in a timely manner so a German lab was unable to identify the specific poison used. As for this being an attempt to scare, i.e. a warning, rather than an attempted assassination, I’m not completely convinced. Yes, it’s true that everyone survived but then so did Sergei Skripal and his daughter. So did Alexei Navalny, thanks to the pilot’s decision to quickly land the plane he was on.

I’m not trying to start a new conspiracy theory, just pointing out that previous Russian attempts to kill haven’t always worked. Maybe this one didn’t quite work either? One last tidbit to consider. One of the Ukrainian negotiators who was a victims of this poisoning was shot dead a few days later, though the circumstances are vague.

In summary: it’s all murky.

— Shaun Walker (@shaunwalker7) March 28, 2022

The man who was shot was Denis Kireev. Here’s a report on his death from the Sun noting he was described as both a hero and a traitor:

Officials in Kyiv said Denis Kireev, 45, a spy and former banker, was killed during an operation “defending the nation”.

The government hailed him a hero hours after MPs had earlier claimed he had committed “treason” and was executed by the Ukrainian intelligence agency.

Both Russian and Ukrainian sources made claims about his alleged spying activities including that he may have been working for both sides.

MARCH 28, 2022 BY SCOTT JOHNSON  at PowerLine:

Miranda Devine zooms in on the story of Devon Archer in the New York Post column “Biden’s silent as son’s former friend and business partner faces jail, financial ruin.” Devine updates us on the story: “Archer has less than five weeks left before he has to go to jail to serve a one-year, one-month sentence over a fraud he says he had no knowledge his then-partners were committing, and which cost him his life’s savings.”

Devine’s February 7 column anticipated Archer’s sentencing. Her previous column seems somewhat more cynical about Archer than her column today. In any event, her column today contrasts with it. In the February column Devine exhumes interesting material from Hunter’s laptop. Both columns are worth reading.

It has been left to the reporters and columnists of the New York Post to tell the Hunter Biden story. Archer is a chapter in the story. Archer and several of his business colleagues have been convicted of fraud in the case brought by Southern District of New York prosecutors.

Devine reminds us that Archer testified last summer to the Delaware grand jury investigating Hunter Biden over tax evasion, money laundering and violations of the Foreign Agents Registration Act, allegations unrelated to Archer’s fraud conviction. Prior to his arrest in the Native American tribal fraud case, Archer served with Hunter Biden on the board of Burisma.

Devine states that Judge Ronnie Abrams sentenced Archer to prison and Archer and ordered that he forfeit $15 million as well as pay his share of $43 million restitution (to be divided with his co-defendants?) despite the fact that she has said she thought Archer was “innocent,” “lacked the requisite intent” and lost money on the $60 million fraud cooked up by his co-defendants to cheat investors in a Native American tribal bond scheme.

Proof of the requisite intent is an element of the offenses of which Archer was convicted. Judge Abrams has the power to set aside Archer’s convictions upon a finding that that the evidence is insufficient to support them. Indeed, Judge Abrams did so. The Second Circuit Court of Appeals reversed Judge Abrams’s finding in United States v. Archer and the Supreme Court denied certiorari this past November.

The Department of Justice’s press release regarding Archer’s February sentencing is posted here. The New York Post reported on it here.

The Delaware grand jury that is investigating Hunter Biden is still at work. Three Wall Street Journal reporters update the story today in “Prosecutors Advance Tax Probe of Hunter Biden.” Subhead: “Grand jury heard witness in February about past drug use, spending habits of president’s son.”

Hunter Biden appears to be the chief operating officer in the corrupt Biden family busines, yet it is hard to believe that he will ever have to face the music. The elevation of Ashley Biden’s abandoned diary into a federal case pursued by the FBI and the SDNY prosecutors appears illustrative of the double standards in play.

Is the Journal story to be taken at face value? Among other things, the Journal reports: “As the investigation has unfolded, Justice Department officials have discussed whether Hunter Biden’s well-documented problems with drug abuse and his efforts to treat it could serve as a defense for the potential criminal tax case, some of the people said.” Surely “some of the people” jest.

Main Problem With Our Biden: HE CAN’T GROW UP!

Hunter Biden’s Laptops Are Now An Active National Security Threat

MARCH 28, 2022

Joe Biden

An urgent concern for the country is the continuing threat to our national security posed by a compromised President Biden.

Author Margot Cleveland profile

by MARGOT CLEVELAND at the Federalist:

On Friday, The Daily Mail reported that emails recovered from Hunter Biden’s laptop show he helped an infectious disease research company pursue projects in Ukraine. Those emails confirm portions of charges Russia made the previous day that an investment group run by the now-president’s son had funded a company conducting research at biological laboratories in Ukraine.

While these developments add another scandal to the long list of Biden family dirty laundry, the more urgent concern for the country should be the continuing threat to our national security posed by a compromised President Biden and the possibility that Russia has access to the catalog of compromising material contained on Hunter’s laptop.

Mere weeks before then-President Donald Trump and Joe Biden faced off in the November 2020 presidential election, The New York Post published emails obtained from a laptop Hunter Biden had abandoned at a repair shop in Delaware. Those emails revealed that during the elder Biden’s time as Barack Obama’s vice president, Hunter engaged in a pay-to-play scandal, trading off his father’s position to strike deals with players in Ukraine and China. The venture was a family one, with Joe “the Big Guy” Biden listed in one email as set to receive a 10 percent cut of one pending deal and Hunter telling his daughter in another message that “pop” took half of his earnings.

Even after a former business partner of Hunter Biden’s confirmed the authenticity of the emails, the supposed standard-bearers of journalism buried the scandal and social media outlets censored both the story and The New York Post. Worse still, “more than 50 former senior intelligence officials” signed a letter framing the Hunter Biden emails as Russian disinformation.

Among others, former CIA directors or acting directors John Brennan, Leon Panetta, Gen. Michael Hayden, John McLaughlin, and Michael Morell signed the letter. In doing so they gave then-candidate Joe Biden cover to lie to the American public, which he did when Trump confronted him about the scandal during a presidential debate.

Are you saying the “laptop is now another Russia, Russia, Russia hoax?” Trump asked Biden.

“That’s exactly what [I] was told,” Biden countered. “There are 50 former national intelligence folks who said that what he’s accusing me of is a Russian plant,” Biden professed to the American public before they went to the polls and elected Biden our commander in chief.

But even The New York Times has finally admitted the laptop was real and the emails were legitimate. Initially, that admission proved significant because it likewise legitimizes the scandals spawned from the documents recovered from Hunter’s abandoned laptop. However, the trajectory of the scandal changed Friday with The Daily Mail’s exclusive.

“Emails from Hunter’s abandoned laptop show he helped secure millions of dollars of funding for Metabiota, a Department of Defense contractor specializing in research on pandemic-causing diseases that could be used as bioweapons,” The Daily Mail announced last week. The article continued: “[Biden] also introduced Metabiota to an allegedly corrupt Ukrainian gas firm, Burisma, for a ‘science project’ involving high biosecurity level labs in Ukraine. And although Metabiota is ostensibly a medical data company, its vice president emailed Hunter in 2014 describing how they could ‘assert Ukraine’s cultural and economic independence from Russia’– an unusual goal for a biotech firm.”

The Daily Mail added more details about Metabiota and Hunter Biden’s role in brokering relationships for the research company in Ukraine. Included throughout the article were copies of the emails ostensibly obtained from Hunter’s laptop that confirmed The Daily Mail’s reporting. The article also added details shedding light on Hunter’s “business” dealings in Ukraine during the time his father served as vice president and America’s point person on issues related to that country.

Friday’s exclusive is not the first time The Daily Mail has published never-before-seen material from Hunter Biden’s laptop. Last August, the outlet published “unearthed footage” of Hunter Biden telling a prostitute that, in the summer of 2018, another laptop went missing and he believed Russia had stolen it. At the time, Hunter also expressed concern that the laptop might prove fodder for blackmail since it contained compromising material.

What distinguishes the emails contained in last week’s Daily Mail article from those published last year is that the most recent release came the day after Russia’s State Duma speaker, Vyacheslav Volodin accused President Biden with being “involved in the creation of bio laboratories in Ukraine,” with Volodin claiming that “an investment fund run by his son Hunter Biden funded research and the implementation of the United States’ military biological program.”

Soon after Volodin made the charge on Thursday, the Telegraph called Russia’s accusation of Hunter Biden funding Ukrainian biological laboratories an “unsubstantiated claim” “designed to build on negative coverage about [the] president’s son in Right-wing US media.” But with Friday’s release of previously undisclosed emails from Hunter Biden’s laptop, Russia’s claim, at least concerning Hunter Biden’s connection to Ukrainian biological laboratories, appears accurate.

While none of the emails released on Friday support Russia’s claim that the Ukrainian labs were used to research or create bioweapons, propaganda need only hold a sliver of truth to serve its purpose. And the cache of emails contained on Hunter Biden’s abandoned laptop provides Putin and his comrades enough evidence to seemingly confirm the Russian government’s earlier claim that Hunter Biden helped implement a bioweapon program in Ukraine. This false framing also provides Russia ammunition to justify its attack on its neighbor to the west.

Russia’s ability to point to the Hunter Biden emails as confirmation of its claims of a biolab in Ukraine raises a serious question with huge national security implications: How did Russia know the day before The Daily Mail’s exclusive that the Hunter Biden’s investment fund, Rosemont Seneca, had invested in Metabiota and been involved in Metabiota’s operations in Ukraine?

The timing of events last week suggests Russia has access to the same emails as The Daily Mail or that Vladimir Putin’s agents might well have obtained access to Hunter Biden’s first laptop—the one the president’s son believed Russians had stolen in 2018. In either case, the Biden family corruption documented on the laptops has gone from a potential national security risk to a real one—and in the midst of a war launched by Russia on a country bordering North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies.

Together, the Biden family, the intelligence agencies, and the corrupt media—social and legacy—hold full responsibility for the danger Americans now face. Biden knew full well how compromised his family was, and that there were two laptops, not one, with evidence of the corruption floating about. Yet Biden lied to the American public, with an assist from the former high-level members of the intelligence community who signed the letter suggesting the laptop scandal represented Russian disinformation.

Then there is the FBI which, by December 2019, had access to the abandoned laptop and thereby also knew that Hunter believed Russians had stolen his laptop in summer 2018. To date, there has been no indication that the FBI provided Joe Biden a defensive briefing on the national security risk posed by those laptops. Or if FBI agents did brief Biden on the risks in a timely manner, that means he nonetheless lied to the American public and ran for president knowing the propaganda at Putin’s fingertips.

Even when coupled with the complicity of former members of the intelligence community, all of Joe Biden’s lies would mean nothing if the media had done its job and reported the story when it still matter. It’s too late now, however: Biden is our commander in chief and Putin potentially holds a cache of compromising information perfect for propaganda purposes.

The January 6 Witch Hunt Kills a Good Man

By Rajan Laad at American Thinker:

If you enquire with anyone — even those who follow right-leaning media such as Fox News — about Matthew Perna, the response will likely be ignorance.

This is nothing short of tragic.  Even more tragic is the unspeakable suffering Perna endured at the hands of the imposing state that left him despondent, disheartened, and dispirited, such that he resorted to suicide as his path to peace.

What was his crime?

Before we go there, a bit about his background.

In a poignant obituary, his family lovingly described Matt’s life.

Matt was 37 years old.  He graduated from Sharpsville High School in 2002, then from Penn State University.

Matt traveled extensively all over the world, making lasting friendships.  He loved trying different cuisines and experiencing as many different cultures as he could.  He had stints in Southeast Asia teaching English to schoolchildren.

Matt enjoyed running long-distance races and held medals from several states.  He enjoyed reading and had an extensive library.  He loved various kinds of music.  Matt loved animals, even nurturing a sickly kitten back to health.

Matt is survived by his loving family and had a special bond with his departed grandfather.

Matt was what liberals try to portray themselves as.

On January 6, 2021, Matt drove to Washington to attend President Donald Trump’s rally.

The objective was to show solidarity with his president and to express concerns about electoral malpractice.  In a democracy, every citizen has a right to protest.

Author Julie Kelly, who wrote the book January 6: How Democrats Used the Capitol Protest to Launch a War on Terror Against the Political Right, followed Matt’s case closely.

After Trump’s speech, Matt, wearing his “MAGA” sweatshirt, marched to Capitol Hill and “walked through an open door on the Senate side of the building shortly before 3 P.M. that afternoon.  Capitol Police, shown in surveillance video, stood by as hundreds of protesters entered the Capitol.”

Matt did not assault anyone or carry a weapon or vandalize property or steal anything.  He just ambled around the building left after 20 minutes.

Immediately after the protests, Biden, Harris, Pelosi, FBI director Wray, Attorney General Garland, and news media engaged in a sustained demonization campaign that consisted of overstatements and fabrications.

The protest was compared to the Oklahoma City bombing, the 9/11 Islamic terror attacks, and Pearl Harbor.  The protesters were called domestic terrorists, insurrectionists, white supremacists, and neo-Nazis.

Two weeks after the protest, Matt discovered “his image on the FBI’s most-wanted list” for the January 6 “riots”.  As a law-abiding citizen, Matt immediately contacted his local FBI office and voluntarily submitted to questioning.  Yes, on January 18, six FBI agents arrested Perna at his home.

From that juncture, Perna found himself trapped in a nightmarish, Kafkaesque maze.

By February 2021, Perna was indicted by a grand jury on four counts including obstruction of an official proceeding and trespassing misdemeanors.  Based on his lawyer’s advice, Perna pleaded guilty to all four counts.  Since he had no prior criminal record, he expected to receive a light prison sentence.

However, the powers that be had other plans.

Matthew Graves, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, sought a lengthy prison sentence for Matt following his guilty plea.  If Graves had had his way, Matt would have faced 57 to 71 months in prison.

Graves asked for draconian sentencing knowing that judges on the D.C. District Court had allowed the Justice Department to file baseless charges, such as the obstruction of an official proceeding felony, and even had authorized pretrial detention for the accused.

Owing to the climate of fear and concerns of not receiving a fair trial in a city that voted almost 94 percent against Trump in 2020, many January 6 defendants such as Matt accepted a plea offer.

After more than a year of public humiliation and being subjected to torture through the labyrinthine legal system, Matt saw no way out.  On Feb 25, 2022, he hanged himself in his garage.  In reality, it was the legal system that strangled him.

Kelly asked Graves’s office for comment on Matt’s passing.  “We typically do not comment on cases or investigations beyond what has been filed or stated in Court and have no  comment.”

A fair legal system in a republic would sentence Matt to a few months of community service, which, given his charitable nature, he would have willingly performed.

But instead, the Washington establishment, hell-bent on destroying President Trump and his MAGA movement, and silencing their political opponents, used the likes of Matt as pawns in their ugly campaign of vengeance.

What a heartbreaking ending to a kind, gentle, passionate, and talented soul and a patriot.  There was so much to live for and so much he could have achieved.  He would have brought joy to so many.

Alas, all that is left are his memories.  Sadly, even his memories will not be spared by his persecutors.  In reports of his death, Matt is referred to as a rioter, and they mention him pleading guilty without any context.

These are the same people who eulogized George Floyd, who, between 1997 and 2005, was convicted of eight crimes and served four years in prison for aggravated robbery in a home invasion.  They also express undying support BLM rioters, arsonists, and looters.

With Matt’s passing, the powers that be in Washington and the media have blood on their hands.

These are the kind of abhorrent occurrences that are frequent under totalitarian regimes.  It is nothing short of shocking that this occurred in one of the world’s largest republics, where protests, irrespective of the cause, are a fundamental right.

It is also unfortunate that the GOP has opted to be relatively silent or is siding with the tormentors of Matt and the January 6 protesters.

The situation is critical for the January 6 protesters, many of whom have been languishing in prison for over a year, awaiting trial.

The GOP can begin by setting up a legal fund in the name of Matthew Perna that will finance proper legal assistance along with medical and psychological support for all the January 6 protesters.  Perhaps they can donate a percentage of the donations they receive.

The Republicans cannot afford to wait until they win the midterms to bring about changes, or else there may be many more such unfortunate occurrences.  The GOP needs to make a great deal of noise about those unfairly jailed.  All right-leaning media outlets need to be talking about this every day without exception.

All citizens need to be writing about this to their governors, senators, and representatives, and on social media.  Remain silent now, and these citizens may suffer the same fate as Matt.

If allies do not help at this juncture, they are not worthy of being called allies.

The best tribute to Matt is to ensure that no other citizens engaging in their democratic rights to protest ever face such an unfortunate fate.

How Low Can Our America Fall With Biden AT THE HELM?

We’ve been watching the fallout of Biden’s gaffe about regime change in the Soviet Union Russia, but it is hard to top today’s headline in the Wall Street Journal for droll understatement:

The story includes this similarly droll bit of “reporting”:

It wasn’t clear if Mr. Biden’s statement was designed to send a message to Mr. Putin and the international community, or simply a verbal misstep.

All of which brings us to the stunning new poll result out from the well-respected—and Democrat-connected—Iowa Poll, whose most recent nationwide survey finds Biden’s overall approval rating at 34 percent. This is very nearly Nixon-on-the-eve of resignation territory, or George W. Bush after eight years of public weariness over the war in Iraq, but if Biden tries really hard, I’m sure he can sink further.

Paul Bedard reports in the Washington Examiner:

A gold-standard pollster heralded by Democrats for her accuracy has just pulled the rug out from under the White House with the worst findings yet for President Joe Biden.

Ann Selzer, who conducts the famous Iowa Poll, working with Iowa’s Grinnell College, has found nationally that Biden’s approval rating has sunk to 34% and that most respondents believe the economy is also heading south.

“The latest edition of the Grinnell College National Poll (Grinnell-Selzer) shows that nearly 6 in 10 Americans believe the economy will get worse in the next 12 months — the highest number recorded in the history of the poll. And the pessimism about the future of the economy may be weighing down President Joe Biden’s approval ratings across the board,” said the poll analysis.

You can download the complete survey here.

In other news today, also from the Wall Street Journal:

A federal tax investigation into Hunter Biden is gaining momentum as prosecutors gather information from several of his associates about the sources of his foreign income, including from Ukraine, and examine President Biden’s son’s relationship with a company that handled some of his finances, according to people familiar with the matter.

Funny how the Hunter Biden investigation seems to be picking up steam, or that “people familiar with the investigation” (a dead giveaway) are speaking to the media about it. Looks like an exit strategy for desperate Democrats taking shape.

P.S. Regarding Biden’s regime change “gaffe”—could this be an example of a “Kinsley gaffe,” that is, Michael Kinsley’s famous definition of a “gaffe” where someone tells the truth? Taken with Biden’s future-tense remarks to U.S. troops about what they “will” see when they get to Ukraine, one legitimately wonders just what planning is going on right now inside Biden’s National Security Council.

NBC poll shows Biden still slidin’, particularly over Ukraine

I’ve been waiting and waiting for Joe Biden to get what looked to me like an inevitable bounce in his poll numbers as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After all, the major news networks and cable news outlets have been fighting valiantly to portray Biden as some sort of decisive leader facing down the evils of the Madman of Moscow. And the focus on Ukraine has largely cut the legs out from under the bigger stories of Bidenflation, the Biden border crisis, and the other messes that Uncle Joe has left for others to clean up. Earlier this week, the Associated Press found that the ongoing war still hadn’t delivered any good news for the President, and today NBC News served up another helping of the same trend. Biden’s approval numbers have hit their lowest mark of his presidency in that survey, while one of the biggest concerns brought up by respondents was precisely the issue Biden was probably counting on to rescue him.

Amid Europe’s largest land war since World War II, 7 in 10 Americans expressed low confidence in President Joe Biden’s ability to deal with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in a new NBC News poll, and 8 in 10 voiced worry that the war will increase gas prices and possibly involve nuclear weapons.

And during the nation’s largest inflation spike in 40 years, overwhelming majorities said they believe the country is headed in the wrong direction and disapproved of the president’s handling of the economy.

Those are some of the major findings of the new national NBC News poll, which found that Biden’s overall job approval rating had declined to 40 percent, the lowest level of his presidency.

That Biden Call FOR REGIME CHANGE IN RUSSIA (is not a bad idea)….but not wise yet?

MARCH 27, 2022 BY JOHN HINDERAKER at PowerLine:

Joe Biden’s call for regime change in Russia, which likely was a manifestation of his worsening dementia, has caused consternation around the world.

Joe Biden is facing an international backlash from his own allies after calling for regime change in Russia.

Emmanuel Macron led a chorus of disapproval following the US president’s comments, in which he called Vladimir Putin a “butcher” and insisted the Russian premier “cannot remain in power”.

Downing Street said it was for the Russian people to choose their leader, while Mr Biden’s own secretary of state contradicted the president in an attempt to limit the diplomatic fallout.
A senior US diplomat said Mr Biden had “made a dangerous situation more dangerous” and threatened to “extend the scope and duration” of the conflict.
A Downing Street spokesman said that regime change was not a policy being pursued by Boris Johnson and echoed comments made by Nadhim Zahawi earlier.
Rebuking his US counterpart, Mr Macron, the French president, said on Sunday: “I think we must do everything to avoid the situation getting out of hand. I wouldn’t use these kinds of words because I’m still in talks with President Putin.”
In the US, there was a recognition that Mr Biden had made a serious error of judgment.

More from the Telegraph:

Joe Biden’s off-the-cuff comments in Warsaw regarding the future leadership of Russia were a shot in the arm for Vladimir Putin.

For one thing, they played right into the false Kremlin narrative of an aggressive Nato, hell-bent on Russia’s destruction.

The “evidence” of Western plots is currently being rolled out across compliant state-sanctioned media outlets.

The problem is, it is true.

Not the bit about plots – any intelligent consumer of information can see that.

No, the truthful bit is that the US president said the words.

Here is a question: who is in charge of U.S. foreign policy? Our Secretary of State, told of Biden’s call to oust Putin, said “…we do not have a strategy of regime change in Russia or anywhere else.” But isn’t that Joe Biden’s decision? Maybe Biden said it on purpose to announce a change in our policy toward Russia. Why doesn’t anyone seem to be considering that possibility?

It will be interesting to see whether any reporter will ask Biden why he said what he did, whether he meant it, whether he wants to retract it, and so on. Perhaps the press will just pass by in silence, thinking that is the best way to prop up a failing administration.

“She may face prison time”!

Prominent Russians quit jobs over opposition to Putin’s war

KAREN TOWNSEND Mar 27, 2022 at HotAir:

Marina Ovsyannikova boldly held up a poster with the words “No War” written in English during an evening news broadcast on Russian television. She quit her job in protest of Putin’s war in Ukraine. Though she was offered asylum in France by President Emmanuel Macron, she turned the offer down because she wants to remain in Russia. She was arrested, fined, and released. Her legal troubles are not over, though, and she may face prison time. Her brave stance is notable because not only is it illegal to protest in Russia, Putin has a reputation for brutal retaliation against those who oppose him.

Other prominent Russians are coming forward and leaving their positions, too. Anatoly Chubais, Putin’s climate change envoy, stepped down and left the country. Chubais is a former deputy prime minister. He is credited for recommending the administration hire Putin during the Yeltsin years.

Arkady Dvorkovich, also a former deputy prime minister and currently the chairman of the International Chess Federation (FIDE), criticized Putin’s war in comments to Mother Jones magazine on March 14. He came under fire from the Kremlin for that. Dvorkovich decided to step down from his role with the foundation after a top official in the United Russia party demanded he be fired.

A longtime anchor at the state-funded NTV channel, Lilia Gildeyeva decided to quit her job after Putin invaded Ukraine. She told the independent news site The Insider, “It was an immediate nervous breakdown. For several days I couldn’t pull myself together. The decision was probably obvious right away. There won’t be any more work.” She admitted that news coverage is tightly controlled by Russian authorities and receive orders from them. She didn’t quit, though, when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. Now she says, “When you gradually give in to yourself, you don’t notice the depth of the fall. And at some point, you find yourself face to face with the picture that leads to Feb. 24.”

Another Russian journalist, Zhanna Agalakova, also quit her job. She worked for another state-run television channel, Channel One, for more than 20 years. She worked as an anchor and also as a correspondent in Paris, New York, and other Western countries. Three weeks after Putin’s invasion, it was reported that she quit and is in Paris. She gave a news conference in Paris and along the way, she explained how propaganda works.

“We have come to a point when on TV, on the news, we’re seeing the story of only one person — or the group of people around him. All we see are those in power. In our news, we don’t have the country. In our news, we don’t have Russia,” Agalakova said.

Referring to the 2014 annexation of Crimea and the support of the separatists in Ukraine, she said that she “could not hide from the propaganda anymore,” even as a foreign correspondent. Agalakova said she had to “only talk about the bad things happening in the U.S.”

“My reports didn’t contain lies, but that’s exactly how propaganda works: You take reliable facts, mix them up, and a big lie comes together. Facts are true, but their mix is propaganda,” she said.

She blasted the state media for repeatedly using Putin’s description of Ukrainian opponents as “Nazis”. She says he does so to hit a nerve in Russia, a country still bearing scars from World War II. “When, in Russia, we hear the word ‘Nazi’, we only have one reaction — destroy. It’s a manipulation, a huge lie.”

Mikhail Baryshnikov, the legendary male classical dancer of the 1970s and 1980s, cautions against imposing sanctions on artists and sports stars.

This month conductor Valery Gergiev and operatic soprano Anna Netrebko were among those who lost prestigious work in the west due to their ties to Vladimir Putin’s regime.

“An open exchange in the arts is always a good thing,” Baryshnikov said. “I don’t think it’s right to put the weight of a country’s political decisions on the backs of artists, or athletes, who may have vulnerable family members in their home country. For people in those exposed positions, neutrality is a powerful statement. And if you want me to be specific, Daniil Medvedev should play Wimbledon.”

Last week, the British sports minister Nigel Huddleston said the government would need assurances that any sportspeople entering the UK “are not supporters of Vladimir Putin”.

In other words, don’t punish Russian artists and sports players over Putin’s war. They aren’t to blame for Putin’s actions. The Mad Man of Moscow acts on his own. Baryshnikov is raising money for an organization that is anti-Kremlin and promotes Russian culture, as well as aids refugees.

Baryshnikov, 74, who was born in Riga, Latvia, and who defected from the USSR to Canada in 1974, wants to improve people’s understanding of Russia. He has joined fellow prominent artists who are critical of the Kremlin to set up True Russia, a GoFundMe campaign to spread a better understanding of Russian culture and to raise money to help refugees.

The campaign also involves the Russian writer Boris Akunin and leading Russian economist Sergei Guriev. Together they have issued a call to other people in exile, arguing they “do not have the right to remain idle”.

“The hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians who have lost their homes, their livelihoods, their loved ones, and even their lives are bearing the full brunt of the blow. But all of us who speak Russian and belong to the Russian cultural world feel the blow too. The very word Russian has become toxic,” says their campaign statement.

Nothing will change until Putin is gone. Even then, there is no guarantee that anything will change in Russia, depending on who succeeds him. It’s a matter of how much strength the renewal of the Cold War ushered in by Putin continues to have after Putin is gone.

Slow Joe Falling In Love With Fascist Iran?

With the world focused on Vladimir Putin’s effort to appropriate Ukraine for Russia, the Biden administration has devoted itself to an arrangement that would fund and facilitate Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons in the name of doing the opposite. The administration has relied on the servants of Vladimir Putin to work out the details with the Iranians insofar as they refuse to treat directly with us. That is okay with the Biden administration. They understand the feeling.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken flew off to the Israeli summit with its Abraham Accord partners. His mission is said to be “reassurance.” Matt Lee covers Blinken’s trip for the AP here. Humeyra Pamuk covers Blinken’s trip for Reuters here.

Each story has “reassure” in the headline. It is difficult to interpret such “reassurance” as anything other than a sign that the sell-out is imminent.
