Friendly Reminder: Raphael Warnock Is Still a Nasty Piece of Work

Georgia Republican Senate Candidate Herschel Walker has been hit with a public relations event that the liberal media will eat up and create consternation among establishment Republicans. The latter groups will lecture about candidate quality again though their slate of candidates has virtually lost all their primaries. Walker will be raked over the coals as some heinous being, though have we forgotten that incumbent Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock is no saint? If we’re going to discuss character here—Warnock is hot garbage.

Warnock’s baggage isn’t new—the media just buried it. Matthew Foldi, formerly of the Washington Free Beacon, recycled past reports about the Georgia Democrat and pieces from the publication’s senior investigative reporter, Alana Goodman.

What Walker did—allegedly pay for a girlfriend’s abortion—isn’t a scandal, but since the Left changes the definition of words daily, let’s play their game here. Warnock has a lengthy and sordid history of being a horrible human being. Warnock’s ex-wife alleges that he neglected to pay child support and allegedly conducted a sustained campaign of harassment during what appears to be a nasty custody battle; he had subpoenaed her college transcripts. At the time of his 2020 Senate race, he asked for the court proceedings relating to this custody battle to be sealed (via WFB):

The enterprising work of the Washington Post, among others, revealed that the former Alabama Supreme Court justice turned Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore had repeatedly engaged in inappropriate behavior with teenage girls. A trio of Post reporters tracked down four of those women, who attested on-the-record to Moore’s revolting behavior.

Fast forward three years to a Senate race in which another set of lurid allegations has surfaced, this time involving Democratic candidate Raphael Warnock.

The difference: their political affiliation.

Like Moore, the allegations against Warnock involve the abuse of underage children decades ago. They center on a Maryland church camp where a young Warnock served in a senior role, and where he was arrested in 2002 for obstructing a police investigation into alleged abuses taking place on camp grounds.

We now know, thanks to the intrepid reporting of the Free Beacon’s Alana Goodman, that state officials revoked the camp’s authorization to operate, citing unreported incidents of child abuse and a bevy of health and safety violations. One of Warnock’s campers, Anthony Washington, has now come forward, telling Goodman that as a 12-year-old, counselors tossed urine on him and forced him to sleep outside.

Try to find a mention of those details in the New York Times, the Washington Post, or Georgia’s most prominent local broadsheet, the Atlantic Journal-Constitution, which has said it ignored the story because one of Warnock’s rivals in the Democratic primary was pushing it, “but the candidate declined to come forward publicly as the source, so the reporters passed on the story.”

No stopping these fearless investigators!

Regarding scandals, Warnock wins by more than a few touchdowns and at least 1,000 more rushing yards than Walker. The college football hall of famer isn’t the most polished candidate, but he won the primary. Some on the Right would instead use this trip-up to explain how they were right and how their candidates only can win. Sorry, we’re not convinced. McCain and Romney both lost, and there’s gross inauthenticity about the establishment slate, which hasn’t been lost even after the neo-populist overhaul. That’s not to say that every Trump-backed candidate is a home run. This is politics—most of these people will eventually disappoint. But after decades of the same old game and nothing getting done—expect more non-politicians to run and win. Until then, this so-called Walker scandal should fizzle. He might have been caught being a hypocrite. Again, voters expect this, and the latter is the currency of today’s government.

Emergency Rule Is Killing Small Businesses

By Sean-Michael Pigeon at American Thinker:

If you’re in the United States, you’re probably living through a government emergency. Whether it is COVID-19, droughts, or infant formula shortages, authorities across the United States are taking emergency action more readily than ever. The real crisis, though, is how this hasty expansion of government power leads to fraud and abuse at the expense of small businesses.

While many governors have taken steps to let their emergency powers expire, over a dozen states still live under COVID-19 disaster declarations. In many cases, the state of emergency allows authorities to restrict a range of economic activity. Take California, for example, where Governor Gavin Newsom retains the power to reinstate lockdowns, waive statutes to encourage vaccination and restrict so-called “price gouging.”

We shouldn’t be fooled into thinking that emergency powers have tapered off as the pandemic has slowed down. Across the country, emergencies and disasters are still being declared daily.

In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul and NYC Mayor Eric Adams announced an emergency over the monkeypox virus, granting them a wide range of authority to restrict citizen activities and collect data on ordinary Americans. The infant formula shortage, hospital staffing problems, and many other difficulties have also been labeled emergencies.

Each of these emergency declarations comes with orders that modify or create new rules for businesses and individuals; in some cases, they free up funds for those that apply. If we learned anything from COVID-19, it’s that moves like this disproportionately benefit wealthy people and corporations.

Consider the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which was offered by the federal government during the pandemic to help offset payroll costs during lockdowns. The funds were distributed without sufficient supervision. This led to egregious mismanagement — an estimated 10% of the PPP money was wasted on fraudulent claims alone, and less than a quarter of the $800 million tapped for small businesses went to their designated targets.

Instead, over $500 million was sent to large companies and well-connected individuals who could game the system better than small-time entrepreneurs. Even A-list celebrities like Diddy and Khloe Kardashian were given millions of dollars, money that was supposed to go to small businesses.

The effects of such emergency regulations are clear. In NYC, the number of small businesses in 2020 collapsed by almost 45%. Yet somehow, Hochul and Adams still feel bold enough to seize emergency powers.

This is not just a “blue state” problem. In Texas, the policy failures at the southern border are being treated like natural disasters. Governor Greg Abbott has used the situation to justify his controversial migrant busing program. To meet the need for buses, Wynne Transportation secured a lucrative contract to transport migrants at approximately $1,300 per person, well above the typical rate of $300 for such a trip.

This kind of soft cronyism is not new, nor is it slowing down. A quick perusal of the Federal Registry for Disaster Declarations and Assistance shows the staggering number of special federal relief measures for those affected by inclement weather. There aren’t many datasets about where this money goes, but high-profile cases of disaster relief have resulted in fraud and abuse that appear eerily similar to the problems that plagued the PPP funds.

Emergency powers can undoubtedly be useful. However, when leaders rely on hastily enacted policies, small businesses lose out in the scramble to secure contracts or comply with rapidly-changing orders.

Local businesses deserve a seat at the table. Governors must be held accountable, especially when they’re doling out public funds. Like it or not, we’re living in a constant state of emergency. If we can’t end these disaster declarations we should at least get better at enduring them.

Hasn’t Hunter Created Countless Roads To Crimes Making Money, But Untouched Because of DAD?

OCTOBER 6, 2022 BY STEVEN HAYWARD at Power Line:

HUNTER HEADING FOR THE HOOSEGOW?

The Washington Post is out this afternoon with news that “federal agents” have sufficient evidence to charge Hunter Biden with “tax crimes” and making false statements related to a gun purchase.

There are some telltale oddities to the story. It describes the source or sources as “people familiar with the situation.” People? What kind of people? The story does not specify whether these “familiar people” are with the FBI, IRS, ATF, or other federal agency. It merely says “investigators with multiple agencies. . . who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing case.” Looks as though the Post reporters don’t want to risk a specific agency source becoming the target of a leak investigation. Or that the leaking source demanded this vague identification.

Given the practice of the Justice Department never to bring charges on politically sensitive cases within 90 days of an election so as to avoid allegations of partisanship, it is doubtful we will see any official announcement as a result of this story. So why did someone want to leak this out now? Perhaps someone in the FBI or Justice Department is concerned with the plummeting public respect for these agencies, and thinks it would be useful to show that they aren’t partisan. Or it is also possible that someone in the FBI or Justice doesn’t want the Hunter Biden investigation swept under the rug, even though the investigation is being supervised (supposedly) by the U.S. Attorney in Delaware, David C. Weiss, who is a holdover Trump appointee.

But is Weiss a Trumpster? He was recommended for the job in 2017 by Delaware’s two Democratic Senators, Tom Carper and Chris Coons. And the Biden Justice Department asked Weiss to stay on after Biden became president. How likely is it that he’s wholly detached from the tiny Biden-dominated political network in Delaware? I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for an indictment even after the election.

Meanwhile, President Biden today indicated that he intends to pardon all federal inmates convicted of marijuana possession charges. Looks like a prelude for a pardon of Hunter down the road.

THE BIDEN GANGSTERS!

Tony Bobulinski: Biden Clan ‘Stole’ Millions ‘From Me and My Other Partners,’ FBI Ignored Multiple Felonies

By Debra Heine

October 5, 2022

Tony Bobulinski, the Biden family’s former business partner, shared documents with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson  Tuesday night that showed how Hunter and Jim Biden “defrauded” him and two other partners of at least $5 million from the Chinese energy firm CEFC and “took the money for themselves.”

He also revealed for the first time that Jim Biden, Joe’s brother, attempted to contact him by phone while he was being interviewed by the FBI in October of 2020.

The phone call, which Bobulinski missed, came at 1:37 p.m. on October 23, 2020, as he was telling two FBI agents about Joe Biden’s 10 percent cut in the family’s lucrative business deal with CEFC, a Chinese Communist government-linked energy firm.

“On my BlackBerry, Jim Biden called me via WhatsApp,” Bobulinski, a former Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, explained. “My phone starts ringing in the middle of this interview. So, I looked down and I’m like, ‘Is he really calling me right now?’”

So, I show the phone to my lawyer and … then I showed it to the agent. The agents got up out of the chair and left the room. They were like, ‘You can take that call if you want.’ And so, I answered it and there was nobody on the other side. So, I don’t know if it was a mistake or that he tried to send me a message, or what it was. But that’s the last interaction or communication I’ve had with the Biden family.

Bobulinski gave the FBI a five-hour interview and handed over the contents of his three cellphones which reportedly contained “encrypted messages between Hunter and Jim Biden and their business partners, emails, and financial documents detailing the Biden family’s influence-peddling operation in foreign countries during Joe’s vice presidency.”

“I wish I had pictures of the two main agents that were interviewing me,” the whistleblower told Carlson. “Because I would say something, and you could just see the shock on their face.”

Bobulinski said that at certain points during the interview, the agents would decide to take an impromptu break and leave the room. “The agents would convene, and then they’d come back and restart the interview,” he said, adding that he was disclosing facts that had profound implications for the country, and for national security,

A bombshell text exchange from Hunter Biden’s laptop had just hit the news in conservative media that same day, but was ignored by the corporate media. It revealed how the conspirators actively sought to conceal Joe Biden’s involvement in the CEFC deal: “Don’t mention Joe being involved, it’s only when you are face to face,” the text read.

The FBI has done nothing with Bobulinski’s evidence, which allegedly reveals multiple felonies.

Bobulinski told Carlson that he fears that the years-long investigation into Hunter Biden is being purposefully dragged out by the US attorney in Delaware, David Weiss.

“The reason why I’m sitting here is I’ve been sitting on my hands for two years, great legal counsel, and they’ve been advising me to let the process work, you know, let the DOJ, let US Attorney Weiss in Delaware and the FBI in Baltimore and, apparently, Delaware work through it,” he said. “And you know, almost on a monthly basis I’d have that debate and argument with my lawyers [asking] when are the facts coming out? The American people deserve the facts.”

Bobulinski said he was told that Timothy Thibault—the FBI agent who was reportedly forced to resign in August—was assigned by the Washington Field Office as “point man” to manage his allegations. FBI whistleblowers disclosed to Republicans in Congress over the summer that Thibault, who was the FBI assistant special agent in charge at the Washington field office, covered up derogatory info about Hunter Biden, and deep-sixed the investigation.

According to the Washington Times, Thibault was also “known for pushing out unvaccinated agents from the FBI’s election squad that he suspected to be Trump supporters.”

Thibault has a history of partisan activity on social media, which includes “liking” a Washington Post article titled “William Barr has gone rogue,” tweeting to Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) that her father was a “disgrace,” and retweeting a 2020 Lincoln Project post that said  “Donald Trump is a psychologically broken, embittered, and deeply unhappy man.”

Bobulinski said he was told that Thibault would conduct a follow-up interview, but he never heard from him again.

“I haven’t heard from him since, nor have my lawyers,” the whistleblower said.

“When I … found out that Tim Thibault, the FBI agent that was assigned to run point on all the information I and my lawyers provided the FBI, had walked out of the building, I was sort of flabbergasted,” says Bobulinski. “You know, like what? This is crazy. Like when are the American people going to get the facts on all this?”

The whistleblower told Carlson that the FBI’s malfeasance on this matter amounted to election interference in 2020.  “The fact pattern is the FBI alone altered history in that election,” he said.

One of the facts that the corporate media has studiously avoided, was then-candidate Joe Biden’s deep involvement in the family’s influence-peddling operations.

During a press conference in Nashville, Tennessee two hours before the presidential debate on October 22 2020, Bobulinski revealed that he’d had an hour-long meeting with Joe Biden in May of 2017 to discuss the joint venture between the Bidens and CEFC.

“In my approximately hour long meeting with Joe that night, we discussed Biden’s history, the Biden’s family business dealing plans with the Chinese, with which he was plainly familiar, at least at a high level,” Bobulinski said at the time.

Another piece of evidence that shows Biden was well aware of the family’s shady foreign business dealings, was found in a voicemail from Hunter Biden’s iPhone. The elder Biden called Hunter in 2018 to discuss a New York Times article the family’s dealings with CEFC.

Biden appeared to be pleased with the Grey Lady’s whitewash of what should have been a massive scandal. “I thought the article released online—it’s going to be printed tomorrow in the Times—was good,” he said in a voicemail obtained by the Daily Mail. Biden told his scandal-plagued son: “I think you’re clear.”

Bobulinski said the voicemail, which was first revealed in June of 2022, was “staggering.”

“The sitting president of the United States … that’s Joe Biden in his own voice telling the American people, ‘I was always well aware of the business ventures my family was involved in.’”

Bobulinski also told Carlson that Hunter and Jim Biden “defrauded” him and two other business partners, Rob Walker and James Gilliar, of at least $5 million and “took the money for themselves.”

Bobulinski’s allegations of fraud revolve around a contract between a Delaware firm he set up in May 2017, Oneida, owned by him, Jim and Hunter Biden, Walker and Gilliar, to form a joint venture with CEFC, the Chinese firm that was supposed to give them $10 million of working capital.

He alleges that Hunter Biden copied the contract and diverted more than $5 million of the Chinese money into his own pocket.

“It appears that Hunter Biden, Jim Biden, and the Biden family literally copied the same document down to typos [and] the serial number and they removed [the name] Oneida Holdings—which was the Delaware LLC that represented Jim Biden, Hunter Biden, myself, Rob Walker, and James Gilliar—and Hunter and his lawyer George Misires replaced it with Owasco, which was Hunter Biden’s law firm or business that he operated,” Bobulinski explained. “So, he effectively swapped out an entity that he owned 20 percent of to a business that he owned 100 percent of, which is fraud.”

At the time, he said, the Bidens were indicating to him that they were pulling out of the deal, but were actually diverting the money from Oneida Holdings to Hunter’s business.

“Hunter Biden and Jim Biden defrauded [us] and took the money for themselves … stole it from me and my other partners, Rob Walker and James Gilliar,” he said.

TROUBLE IN FLORIDA!

October 6, 2022

So who were these looters arrested in Florida in Hurricane Ian’s aftermath?

By Monica Showalter at American Thinker:

A few days ago, the press made an example of four or five suspected looters busted for robbing homes or businesses in hurricane-ravaged Fort Myers Beach, where some of the worst destruction occurred.

“Don’t even think about looting. Don’t even think about taking advantage of people in this vulnerable situation. And so local law enforcement is involved in monitoring that,” [Florida’s Gov. Ron DeSantis] said during a Friday news conference.

“You can have people you know bringing boats into some of these islands and trying to ransack people’s homes. I can tell you, in the state of Florida, you never know what may be lurking behind somebody’s home, and I would not wanna chance that if I were you, given that we’re a Second Amendment state,” he added.

That was followed by photos of the four or five, sitting on the ground, at least three with their hands cuffed behind their backs.

What’s the news on them now? Three were here in the country illegally, traveling not just 50 miles from their homes in Florida to loot houses, but traveling from some other country in order to break U.S. immigration laws.

DeSantis had plenty to say about that revelation.

According to the New York Post:

Most of the heartless looters busted in hurricane-ravaged Florida were illegal immigrants, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced Tuesday — as he said he’d like to “drag them out by the collars” and “send them back to where they came from.”

We’ve had four looters that were arrested … and they need to be brought to justice,” the tough gov said during an update on the devastation from historic Hurricane Ian.

“But you know, three of the four are illegal aliens,” said DeSantis, one of the fed-up Republican governors who has been sending border-crossers to Democratic sanctuary destinations.

“And so these are people that are foreigners, they’re illegally in our country — and not only that, they tried to loot and ransack in the aftermath of a natural disaster,” the incredulous-sounding governor said.

It probably shouldn’t have surprised anyone. People who have no respect for U.S. immigration law are naturally not going to have respect for any other U.S. laws, let alone respect for their neighbors. Illegal immigration is basically a ‘me first’ proposition that involves cutting border lines, looting benefits from taxpayers without making any contributions whatsoever, stealing I.D. cards to loot some American’s job, and refusing to assimilate — which is to say, carrying on in the thievy way one has always carried on with in one’s home country, given that most of these places are crime pits.

Not all cultures are alike. When one lives in a society where theft is the only way anyone gets ahead, these migrant-exporting societies — looking at you, Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico — tend to have lots of thieves.

It belies the big myth posited by the Open Borders lobby, that unvetted illegal immigrants are always going to be upstanding citizens whose only problem is an absence of “papers.”

The reality is, when you open the border wide to all comers, thieves and criminals hear the message most loudly of all. Illegal aliens, according to some studies, form about a third of the prison populations in the U.S. and that’s just the ones who get caught in cities without leftist Soros-financed district attorneys. Illegals know they can’t get into the U.S. if their local records of crime ever become known, so an open border becomes their only chance for fresh pickings in the states. Many take that opportunity, particularly when, as is the case in Venezuela, there is literally nothing left to steal back home.

Thus far there haven’t been a lot of looters caught in Florida, perhaps because of the ferocious warnings issued by DeSantis and the local Florida sheriffs. But of the ones who were — sure enough, the illegal alien community was, so to speak, “overrepresented.” That ought to be a warning about what kinds of problems to expect as Joe Biden continue to leave the border wide open and millions of unvetted migrants pour in.

EVIL THROUGHOUT THE HOUSE OF BIDEN!

BOBULINSKI AGAINST THE MACHINE

Going back to the New York Post’s suppressed Hunter Biden laptop coverage of October 2020, Miranda Devine has been the essential reporter on the underlying story told by former Biden family business partner Tony Bobulinski. Devine is also the author of the related book Laptop From Hell. She previewed Tucker Carlson’s current interview of Bobulinski in her column “Hunter Biden defrauded me, Jim Biden called me during FBI interview, former biz partner says.” Today Devine follows up in “Ex-Hunter business partner Tony Bobulinski takes on the Biden machine.”

Devine usefully breaks the story down with red bullet points that I can’t replicate:

There are three strands to the Biden story:

• 1) The decades-old Delaware family business selling Joe’s influence to the highest bidder which was internationalized when he became vice president. The concern is that millions of dollars which flowed to the Biden family from China, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Romania, and elsewhere, may have compromised the president.

• 2) Evidence of Joe Biden’s involvement and potential financial benefit in Hunter and Jim’s foreign deals, despite his repeated denials that he knew anything about his family’s business. Material from the laptop and from Bobulinski suggests he met with more than a dozen of Hunter’s business partners, including overseas, in the White House, at the VP’s Washington residence and at a three-for-one dinner at Café Milano in Georgetown on April 16, 2015, to which Hunter invited partners from Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan.

• 3) The coverup.

The coverup goes back to the FBI’s role in the suppression of the story in October 2020. FBI whistleblowers wait in the wings: “Now he says he realizes, through whistleblowers who have come forward to Republican members of Congress, that the FBI buried his damning disclosures about the Biden family, and feels that the four-year investigation into Hunter Biden by the US attorney in Delaware, David Weiss, is dragging out indefinitely.”

Devine concludes her column today with this observation:

As whistleblowers later revealed, his evidence was buried by malign actors inside the FBI and marked as “disinformation,” not to be investigated.

The FBI knew the revelations were not disinformation because the laptop had been in their possession for more than a year, since Delaware computer repair shop owner John Paul Mac Isaac had given it to them in December 2019, along with a detailed and intelligent account of crimes he alleged it contained.

The FBI knew the truth because they had been spying on Rudy Giuliani’s cloud with a covert warrant for two years from May 2019, a month after he began working as then-president Trump’s personal attorney. The FBI had access to the email sent to him on Aug. 27, 2020, in which Mac Isaac catalogues the evidence of foreign corruption he had found on the laptop. The FBI knew The Post was going to publish the story because they had access to text messages between Giuliani and me. They had ample time to warn Big Tech.

As Bobulinski says, “The facts are just daunting.”

Tom Lifson has a good summary of the interview in ”In stunning interview with Tucker Carlson…,Tony Bobulinski explained how the FBI fixed the 2020 election.” Ton Lifson comments: “The rest of the non-conservative mainstream is completely ignoring this story, and with the FBI refusing to move ahead, so far, it will go nowhere until Republicans gain control of at least one house of Congress.”

“The strength of a hurricane can be determined in two ways.”

Did Global Warming Make Hurricane Ian Intensify Faster than Normal?

By Neil L. Frank at American Thinker:

Hurricane Ian “rapidly transformed from a relatively weak storm into a strong one, [a] phenomenon that has become more common” due to climate change.

So reported the New York Times in its daily email newsletter. It also said, “Ian embodies several of the major hurricane trends in recent years, as the world copes with the effects of climate change. It’s a strong storm — and strong storms are becoming more common in the Atlantic Ocean, as its surface water has warmed.”

The prayers of a nation go out to the people in Florida devastated by Hurricane Ian, particularly those in the Ft. Myers area. Ian was indeed one of the most powerful and destructive hurricanes ever to strike southwest Florida.

Unfortunately, the tragedy is compounded by climate-change activists who are using it for political purposes. They blame Ian on global warming. Headlines in the mainstream media claimed Ian was the fourth-strongest hurricane ever to hit Florida and that its strong winds were caused by global warming. Both statements are wrong.

The strength of a hurricane can be determined in two ways. First, you can fly into the storm and measure the winds. Second, you can drop a barometer into the eye and determine the pressure. There is an excellent relationship between wind and the pressure in the eye. The lower the pressure, the stronger the winds. If you know one, then you can calculate the other. For decades before the 1990s, pressure was the main factor in determining the strength of a hurricane.

Using pressure, Ian was not the fourth-strongest hurricane in Florida history but the tenth. The strongest hurricane in U.S. history moved through the Florida Keys in 1935. Among other Florida hurricanes stronger than Ian was another Florida Keys storm in 1919. This was followed by the hurricanes in 1926 in Miami, the Palm Beach/Lake Okeechobee storm in 1928, the Keys in 1948, and Donna in 1960. We do not know how strong the hurricane in 1873 was, but it destroyed Punta Rassa with a 14-foot storm surge. Punta Rassa is located at the mouth of the river leading up to Ft. Myers, where Ian made landfall.

Note well: all these hurricanes occurred before SUVs, so CO2 and the warming it purportedly causes were not their cause.

Another false claim is that CO2 generated by burning of fuels is causing an increase in the number of Atlantic hurricanes. This is based on the historical list of hurricanes since 1850, which shows a significant rise over time. But this claim rests on misunderstanding hurricane science. There are two reasons for the apparent rise in the number of hurricanes, and neither is related to global warming.

First, there has been a dramatic change in our ability to detect hurricanes.

In the 1800s and early 1900s, only sailors on ships could detect a hurricane far out in the ocean, so we missed a lot. We started flying into hurricanes in the 1940s, enabling us to locate and track them in the western third of the Atlantic. But not until satellites became operational in the 1970s were we able to follow storms in the eastern two-thirds of the Atlantic other than by ship. On the average, satellites have enabled us to detect three additional storms per year in the eastern Atlantic, and in 2005 we identified seven that never moved westwards into the range of our weather aircraft. Before satellites, historical records show only one storm every two years in the eastern Atlantic.

Second, there has been a major change in the philosophy of whether and when to name a storm in the north Atlantic. As I have explained in greater depth before, key to this is distinguishing two different kinds of storms — and deciding which to name a hurricane.

Two primary energy sources in the atmosphere cause wind. The first is the presence of cold air beside warm air. The cold air, being more dense and hence heavier, moves under the warm air, producing wind. In meteorology we call this baroclinic energy. This is the classical energy process for all winter storms.

The second is when, in the tropics, thunderstorms heat the air. The rising hot air is replaced by air spiraling in at the surface, and if the wind reaches certain threshold speeds, it becomes a tropical storm.

Cold fronts and winter-type storms (baroclinic) can occur over the north Atlantic not only in the winter but also in the summer. A disturbance (baroclinic) may form along the stalled front. This can generate thunderstorms. The result is a developing storm driven by both baroclinic and thunderstorm energy. If the thunderstorm energy overwhelms the baroclinic energy, the system can morph into a tropical-type storm.

The question then is, should this type of system be named? Before satellites, we rarely named this type of system. On average, we named fewer than one storm of this type per year.

In contrast, during the record-breaking year 2020, 10 out of the 30 named storms were of this type, and last year 11 were. The result has been a dramatic apparent, but not real, increase in the number of tropical storms/hurricanes in recent years — apparent because they’re named.

The dramatic conclusion is that we cannot use the raw historical record to draw any conclusion about the trend in Atlantic hurricane activity. The only valid indicator of changes in Atlantic hurricanes is to examine the landfall of major hurricanes (categories 3, 4, and 5, or winds in excess of 110 mph) in the lower 48 states. Hurricane specialists agree that tropical storms or weak hurricanes might not have been observed in remote areas in the 1800s, but I am confident all major, landfalling hurricanes are in the record books.

An analysis of major hurricane landfalls by decade shows a significant downward trend — not the upward trend predicted and claimed by climate-change activists who insist that global warming will generate more and stronger hurricanes. Today’s landfalls do not compare to those of the middle of last century. Florida was hit by seven major hurricanes in the 1940s. Six major hurricanes slashed the east coast in the 1950s. But not a single major hurricane made landfall in the entire United States from 2005 until 2017.

So much for the claim that global warming has brought more and stronger hurricanes. What of the claim that it made Ian intensify more rapidly than it otherwise would have? That, too, is questionable. If global warming is not causing more and stronger storms, it follows that it cannot be making storms intensify more rapidly.

Buried in the midst of all these claims is a logical fallacy — the fallacy of hypothesis contrary to fact. We simply do not know if Hurricane Ian would have been weaker, or would have intensified more slowly, in the absence of global warming. Why not? Because it did not occur in the absence of global warming.

What we do know is that hurricanes were at least as frequent and powerful before the current period of global warming as they have been during it — indeed, we know they were actually more frequent and more powerful.

Climate-change activists and the mainstream media are wrong. There has not been an increase in the frequency, intensity, or speed of intensification of Atlantic hurricanes in the past several decades. You might clue your representatives in Congress about that so they won’t be so likely to cater to alarmists.

Stupidity AT THE SUPREME COURT!

OCTOBER 5, 2022 BY JOHN HINDERAKER at Power Line:

COMING SOON: POLYGAMY

You could see this one coming a mile away, and many of us did. When the Supreme Court declared that there is no rational reason to deny the right of two people of the same sex to marry–love is love!–it eliminated the teleological foundation of marriage and the family. If marriage is no longer grounded in the biology of reproduction–it takes two, a man and a woman, to make a child–then the number two is likewise irrational. If George and Ken can be in love, and therefore entitled to marry, then why can’t George, Ken and Susan?

The inevitable has happened, as a court in New York seems to be the first to extend the logic of Obergefell to polygamous relationships. FrontPage reports:

New York City’s eviction court – the venue of a landmark same-sex relationship decision long before Obergefell v Hodges – is now the source of a legal opinion that comes down clearly on the side of polyamorous unions.

The decision came in the case of West 49th St., LLC v. O’Neill, decided by New York Civil Court Judge Karen May Bacdayan, concluded that polyamorous relationships are entitled to the same sort of legal protection given to two-person relationships.

In June [2020], Somerville, Massachusetts, passed an ordinance allowing groups of three or more people who ‘consider themselves to be a family’ to be recognized as domestic partners. The neighboring town of Cambridge followed suit, passing a broader ordinance recognizing multi-partner relationships. “The law has proceeded even more rapidly in recognizing that it is possible for a child to have more than two legal parents.”

“Why then,” posited the judge, “except for the very real possibility of implicit majoritarian animus, is the limitation of two persons inserted into the definition of a family-like relationship for the purposes of receiving the same protections from eviction accorded to legally formalized or blood relationships? Is ‘two’ a ‘code word’ for monogamy? Why does a person have to be committed to one other person in only certain prescribed ways in order to enjoy stability in housing after the departure of a loved one?”

Chief Justice John Roberts was one of many who saw where the logic of Obergefell would lead. He wrote, in dissenting from that decision:

Although the majority randomly inserts the adjective “two” in various places, it offers no reason at all why the two-person element of the core definition of marriage may be preserved while the man-woman element may not.

Exactly. If you take biology out of the mix, “two” is an arbitrary and irrational number. And in the short time that has gone by since Obergefell, the concept of biology itself has come under widespread attack. If things continue on their present course–and they will, absent a vastly invigorated conservative movement–the “right” to polygamy will soon be established. Which is to say that the rest of us will have polygamy jammed down our throats.
