I went to the Minnesota State Fair today. Not for the long walks, or the ferris wheel, or chocolate covered hot dogs…..but to see Dennis Prager return to the Fair after a two-year hiatus.
Welcome back, Dennis!
I had trouble finding the Patriot location, for it has been moved to a location where the audience area is even smaller that in years past. Nevertheless, the area was packed with fans.
If State Republican officials had any brains….and I believe most of them have occasional impulses which suggest occasional activity, (but I can’t be sure) they would secure funding for the Patriot to have a location where 40-50 people could sit for three hours as Dennis does his Dennis thing.
In addition this punditless organization should invite Dennis to present his basic Prager University curriculum to state conservative candidates to broaden and deepen their understandings of the battle America presently is suffering with the Obama Marxism invasion into American politics. Then there might become stronger, more confident candidates motivated by Prager’s better America messages which would elect more conservatives to build for America’s better future.
As it was today, about that number of people lingered around for a half-hour or more being replaced by about the same number throughout Dennis’ three-hour radio program. Most stood.
The best of the many important Dennis messages of the day was Dennis’ review of the mass media, meaning LEFTWING reporting, in otherwords America’s city papers, news agencies, and television “news” programs, coverage of the Glenn Beck event at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC over the weekend.
“Race” was the theme common to nearly all of these sources. And the race was a bad one…WHITE. The reportings emphasized uniformly as if written by a single person, that the 200,000 or so crowd was overwhelmingly, or predominantly white.
To the Lefties any group where conservatives congregate is a racist crowd doing racist things…….and are to be thought of as criminals and troublemakers worthy of nothing but disgust and dismissal…….and to some, of arrest.
And Dennis is so right in reminding the public, Americans learn this hate and bigotry in college. The American university, including the system here in our state, teaches a lesson to be memorized and forever remembered, that society is to be judged by its gender, class, and racial mix. If it isn’t at least 1-1-1 equal female, equal pay, and equally black, it is an uncivilized society and must be reformed. Ideally their Marxist paradise should be a society dominated by females, union workers, and blacks because that is the heart of the Democrat gang of victimhoods.
Dennis mentioned that there are a number of crowds which are overwhelmingly white, that these lefty mainstream reporters seem to miss in their race count judgments.
Al Franken’s political booth not far from the Patriot booth had whites only attending (only three of them……and they were definitely white). Would the press note that as a staple in their racism agenda?
Never. Al isn’t a conservative! (Thank God!)
What about the Minnesota Orchestra presenting Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto? Its audiences are overwhelmingly white…..does the Strib ever refer to the all white crowd in attendance as a slur to the event and those attending? Would the New York Times?
I contend that racism is a fundamental tenet of the present Democrat Party dogma. It makes these Marxists and Liberals feel good…..and thus they do their harm to America.
Dennis Prager is a great teacher. Perhaps the greatest teacher clarifying America’s values wars, and the history and nature of these conflicts.
America’s best thinkers and writers today are conservative. It is a good time to be an American when Dennis Prager is on your side.
I have little to no control over the changes made in this unit of communication these days.
I entered this program about twenty years ago when Dennis Prager was appearing annually at the Minnesota State Fair, where I met him by coincidence the late summer of 2001 give or take a year.
For a number of years earlier I had been director of the Minnesota State Horticultural Society which for nearly a century had a major section of a fair building reserved. The Society had made some changes and a friend had asked me to stop by to check it out. I never quite made it that day, but did a day or two after. A friend of mine, a political conservative one, had asked me to stop by a new guy speaker in a Fair political section, there were many in those days. The name Republican, however, was never used as a front to the large crowd listening.
I was told the speaker was Jewish. (Now that would be a number to check out, I thought. I was raised in a modest Jewish section of Dem St. Paul that never spent time around Gentiles or GOPers especially during WWII.)
I could rule my time for I was starting a landscape company….something I was born to do and was hired when eleven years old to landscape two neighbors’ back yard gardens. I was good at it in a neighbor’s eight by eight sandbox that was never used but for me. I landscaped in the box with miniature housing and practiced changing scenes just for the fun of it…..for years!
Was I lucky? I retired from Masterpiece Landscaping last year, the company I had trained in the sandbox without knowing it.
My first career was teaching Russian and Social Studies for high school students. I loved teaching from the wonderful public school teachers I had learned from between 1939 and the 1960s. But, to this day I have never been able to read a book from beginning to end…..Yet, I have purchased, collected books in the hundreds I still own but have never read beyond a page or so for entertainment, but I have when needed.
I studied Russian in college and graduate school and taught it for fourteen years….When I was in college in the 1950s, I was certain there would be trouble with the USSR. The best of all in my educational life…..I must confess, was the two times I visited the USSR when I was still fluent by mouth and brain, in 1966 for a month of study, and 1990 for a few weeks when a group of gals from the Minnesota Anoka area had collected a good size of money to help victims of the Chernobyl disaster.
Today, I live in disaster America….where Dems are Evil and Reps God Only Knows What!
But, yet…..there is Dennis Prager and his “schooling” which seems to be doing well these days.
I loved teaching and was good at it because I loved what I LEARNED FROM MY OLD MAID SCHOOL TEACHERS FROM 1939 to 1952, their honesty, their skills, their love of youngsters whom they taught knowledge making life outside the family very inspiring…..even though I have never been able to read a book! Such was life then. What is life in America today?….ghr
I was born into a conservative family led by my Father in 1934. He was born near Hope, North Dakota in the year 1901, after my Uncle Sam, Uncle Frank, and Uncle Lawrence. Then there was my Aunt Catherine who was born the youngest.
Their father was born in Cherryfield, Maine a year or two before the Civil War began. His wealthy family practiced primogeniture which meant the family wealth went to the oldest of their three boys.
When 17 years old, my grandfather left Maine. His father had purchased a thousand acre plot a few miles from Hope, North Dakota to give him a start on his own in life. I have a post card from when he was sitting on his horse in front of a shop in Chillocothe, Ohio on his way to North Dakota to begin a farm which was purchased for him by his father.
In those days Maine folk were conservatives…..Today, like our Minnesota, they corrupt in command with leftists, don’t they!?
I’ve voted Republican for America’s President ever since Eisenhower with the exception Democrat John Kennedy.
I was born in 1934 as it turned out, dyslexic and crippled with serious asthma which was a major problem when I was in the army….and nearly died from an asthmatic attack when I was only 3 years old…..I can remember that struggle for consciousness to this very day! Fortunately a neighborly nurse lived next door and daily filled my bedroom with sufficient breathing power for me to keep living.
When in the army in the mid-1950s on two occasions I was truly hospitalized for my life merely for serious asthma attacks as my enemies.
I was never, ever able to run until something happened when I was in my early fifties. I fevered, that was for sure. I saw the attacking color in my face which stirred me. More than that, I SAW MY FAT AROUND MY FACE. ugh!
Instead of seeing a doctor, I chose to punish myself for being so careless with such weight…about 185 pounts on a 6 foot body…..causing asthma to remind me never to be fat again. I decided to run to make me wake up!
It was February. I had to run indoors…and my younger son had an indoor tennis match to play that Monday evening which I had to drive him to. It possessed an indoor running track with something like sixteen rounds per mile.
I was determined to punish my fat….so I decided to run, and there would be plenty of room. I would count my punishment by keeping track of the rounds I ran.
One round….no asthma yet! Three rounds….no asthma yet! TEN ROUNDS…..NO ASTHMA YET!
I wound up running two miles without trouble except for a bit of gasping for the weight of fat I didn’t need and wasn’t going to have ever again!
When 55 years old I was able to drop my truck off for service to the vehicle business owned by a good friend. ON THREE OCCASIONS, in summer, I was able to run down highway 169 16 miles and a little bit more, TO GET HOME!
My longest run that year and forever, was a 32 run around a large running track relatively new, one beautiful Spring Saturday morning from eight to early afternoon near Hopkins High School.
I had to quit running in 2016….I had wrecked the bone jointing around my right knee for running countless miles too much!
Yet, I have been able at age 89 to walk comfortably about a mile every other day ever since my recovery that following Summer.
The media is making a big deal about President Trump’s recent expression of frustation at the electoral rigging that went on in the 2020 election. We see a lot of articles like these:
In his newest post, Trump indicated he didn’t say he wanted to terminate the Constitution, stating Monday that “steps must be immediately taken to RIGHT THE WRONG,” referring to what he describes as widespread fraud and deception involving “Big Tech” — of which he provided no evidence — in the 2020 election.
In this article the Yahoo! person, posing as a journalist, wrote:
…referring to what he describes as widespread fraud and deception involving “Big Tech” — of which he provided no evidence — in the 2020 election.
The author knows that the media, including Yahoo!, Google, Facebook, and Twitter, intentionally buried the well-researched article by the New York Post about massive corruption in the Biden family, but they still doesn’t want the public to know.
Meanwhile, all of these same entities that buried the truth about the Bidens also interfered in all the elections since 2016 with the intentional lies about Russian collusion to destroy Donald Trump.
The media is excusing their non-reporting on the Biden family corruption by stating that they couldn’t verify the story but that is pure BS. They repeatedly will parrot or reprint stories from the New York Times, the Washington Post, USAToday, ABC, NBC, CBS, NPR without doing any verification. They repeat stories that push the leftist agenda and go after Republicans while intentionally hiding the truth about the candidates they support.
The unreported campaign contributions by the media to Democrats are massive and their intentional interference in our elections dwarfs anything Russia, China, Iran, or any other foreign country have done.
The media is the great threat to our survival as a free country and to the survival of the Constitution. It’s not Trump.
Well, no, of course they don’t. The idea that liberal news outlets might contribute to our national defense, rather than undermining it, is laughable. And yet, here they are: the defense authorization bill is being held hostage to the Democrats’ insistence that the “Journalism Competition and Preservation Act” be included in it.
Whatever the merits of the JCPA, it has absolutely nothing to do with national defense, and should be stripped out of the defense appropriations bill and considered independently on its own merits. Obviously, the Democrats wouldn’t have tried to slip it through in this manner if they thought it could withstand scrutiny.
Tom Cotton, as good a barometer as any, says Republican Senators should filibuster the defense authorization act until the media preservation act is stripped out:
Cotton said that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) are holding the bill “hostage” by moving to add “all kinds of extraneous nondefense measures” such as the JCPA; the SAFE Banking Act, which would allow banks to handle marijuana-related businesses; or Sen. Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) natural gas and oil permitting bill as a reward for his voting for the Inflation Reduction Act.
Cotton referred to the JCPA as a “payoff for liberal media companies to form a cartel to work with big tech that will hurt center-right outlets.”
That’s good enough for me. What, exactly, does the JCPA say? You can read the text here. It is convoluted. It sets up a system whereby the antitrust laws are waived so that media outlets can band together to negotiate royalty agreements relating to news stories with social media platforms.
What would be the result? From a quick review of the bill, I have no idea. It sets up a Rube Goldberg system, the consequences of which are probably unforeseeable. The social media companies understandably don’t like it; Facebook has said that it might remove all news from its platform if JCPA passes. Is that a threat or a promise? It sounds all right to me.
While I can’t predict the consequence should the “Journalism Competition and Preservation Act” pass–you always know preserving competition is the object when the centerpiece of the bill is a waiver of the antitrust laws–the one thing I know for sure is that it has nothing to do with the national defense. Republicans should refuse to proceed with the defense authorization act until all irrelevant measures, including JCPA, have been deleted.
Senators Chuck Grassley and Ron Johnson have made it a mission to expose the Biden family corruption at whose apex sits President Biden. Their various reports, speeches, and correspondence are all accessible here. Most recently, they summarized the fruits of their research in this letter letter dated October 26, 2022 (“[t]he letter summarizes key elements of the Biden family’s engagements with individuals linked to the Chinese communist party and Chinese intelligence services, and the financial transactions that followed”).
I think of Senator Johnson in the spirit of Jon Justice’s designation of him as “our adopted senator.” I am grateful that he narrowly prevailed in his bid for a third term against the challenge of left-wing lunatic Mandela Barnes, but it shouldn’t have been that close.
In August 2020 Senator Johnson was treated to an unsolicited FBI briefing that was mysteriously leaked to discredit their work on the Biden family business. They have unsuccessfully sought to ascertain the responsibility for this briefing.
Senator Johnson homed in on the issue with the evasive FBI Director Christopher Wray at a committee hearing last month (video clip below). The May 1, 2021 Washington Post story to which Senator Johnson refers is accessible online here. The bylines of reporters Ellen Nakashima, Shane Harris, and Tom Hamburger adorn the story. I recall the names of at least one or two of them from the Post’s Russia hoax brigade.
Wray is wrong as rain. His refusal to account to Senator Johnson is almost shocking. The FBI is the key to the suppression operation that I discuss in my “Notes on the Twitter Files.” I should have included this element of the saga.

Gunrunner, never-charged criminal, political hack, and perpetually aggrieved former attorney general Eric Holder is back, bloviating about President Trump being imminently arrested. Given that we live in post-Republic times and that the Department of (in)Justice has exhibited no shame or remorse in its years-long campaign of political persecution and partisan double-standards, I’ll take Obama’s contemptible “wingman” at his word just this once. So Democrats, Establishment Republicans, and the Deep State Leviathan plan on humiliating President Trump by frog-marching him before the world and tossing him in the clink.
So what? They’ve been telegraphing this play for months, if not years. We get it. The U.S. government is irredeemably corrupt, we’ve officially entered banana republic territory, and all the worst tyrants in D.C. plan on rounding up and punishing anyone brave enough to fight back or dissent.
News flash, Deep State: You kind of got your point across when Hillary Clinton’s political henchmen and Barack Obama’s FBI (political henchmen with badges?) worked with the Intelligence Community to frame candidate Trump as a Russian spy six years ago and none of the perpetrators ended up in prison. You made things quite clear when you gave tens of millions of dollars to Andrew Weissmann to run the Mueller Inquisition, so that he and his Democrat friends could pave over the lawless bureaucracy’s Russia Hoax tracks; harass the Trump administration in pursuit of nonexistent crimes; and immunize Hillary, the FBI, and their political agents from prosecution. When you started locking up anybody remotely connected to the president for excrement-laden process crimes that were used as part of a stick-or-carrot approach to suborn false testimony against Trump, most of us understood that America had descended into a Lavrentiy Beria Soviet police State once and for all.
For the slow learners out there, these people made things very easy to understand when they decided to use members of the military (who in the old days would have just been called “double agents” or “saboteurs” but are now venerated as “whistleblowers“) to impeach President Trump for a quid-pro-quo hoax in order to damage his re-election campaign and cover up Joe Biden’sactual quid-pro-quo scheming in Ukraine, China, and elsewhere. We watched state attorneys general, secretaries of state, and both federal and state courts look the other way while mail-in ballot dumps and suspicious “pauses” in vote-counting (in explicit violation of state statutory laws) were used to flip battleground states days after the 2020 election and hand Biden an inexplicable “victory” over a sitting president who had won nearly every bellwether county across the country by double-digits, expanded his 2016 vote totals by over ten million, and received more votes than any incumbent in history — all feats that had meant certain victory in every past election. We watched as social media networks censored factual information about Hunter Biden’s “laptop from hell” — containing evidence of financial crimes and deviant behaviors proving how vulnerable the Biden family remains to blackmail from adversarial nation states and other unscrupulous third parties — at the behest of a politically partisan FBI using the false public statements of former members of the Intelligence Community to justify government propaganda, speech suppression, and outright lies.
If there were anyone left in America who still didn’t grasp that these people mean to destroy Donald Trump; his supporters; and anybody who dares to whisper, “Make America Great Again,” they’ve gone out of their way to target Americans who question the legitimacy of the 2020 election farce with threats of criminal charges, job firings, professional sanctions, social “cancelation,” forced psychiatric care (straight out of Stalin’s Soviet playbook), and censorship. They’ve taken the unprecedented step of rewriting history by framing a million-American protest against election fraud on January 6 as a “domestic terrorist attack” and hostile “insurrection.” They’ve used ethically challenged and politically partisan undercover agents, prosecutors, judges, and juries to turn simple acts of trespass, unlawful assembly, or criminal mischief (at most) into outrageously ludicrous charges of “sedition,” “treason,” and “conspiracy.” They’ve used the sycophantic State-controlled press corps to spread the lie that Trump-supporters murdered police officers at the Capitol, when, in fact, four protesters alone lost their lives that day — at least two due to unconscionable State-sanctioned violence.
They’ve spent two years conducting a J6 show trial in Congress (using concocted evidence, unsubstantiated testimony, and false accusations without even the pretense of providing for due process or adversarial counsel) intended to brainwash Americans into believing that President Trump was involved in an attempt to overthrow his own government. They’ve presided over an abject judicial circus pretending to be a serious legal “case.” They’ve kept hundreds of J6 protesters in solitary confinement and under other forms of duress in an effort to force Americans who dared to exercise constitutional rights into accepting preposterously unjust plea deals and falsely admitting to guilt. They’ve hidden almost all video evidence recorded in and around the Capitol that day. They’ve lawlessly violated Americans’ Fourth Amendment rights by tracking their cell phones and seizing their personal data without probable cause or valid warrants. They’ve mysteriously aided and abetted the still unknown, yet politically convenient, January 6 pipe bomb suspect.
They’ve intimidated countless Americans into shutting up, lest they be targeted for prosecution, too. They’ve successfully distracted from all of the suspicious events that threw the 2020 election to Biden by hunting down Americans for their political points of view. And for those Americans who have not yet suffered directly for exercising their constitutional rights to free speech and assembly, their persistent threats of punishment have effectively pulled down a quiet Iron Curtain of self-censorship around a country once known throughout the world as the “land of the free.”
So, sure, we get it — these people plan on arresting, embarrassing, prosecuting, and imprisoning President Trump because he happened to be the first national political figure in half a century to stand up to Deep State thuggery, national self-sabotage, and Uniparty-engineered American decline. Most Americans already understand that every action the Department of (in)Justice takes against President Trump and his supporters is politically motivated and improper.
Our government is sick, venal, and lost. It attacks American citizens, betrays its duty to safeguard constitutional rights, and pursues its own power at the expense of Americans’ liberty. It is rotten, and more Americans accept this difficult truth every day. Yet the consequences for crossing one of the last remaining lines of decorum and arresting a former president on fabricated charges will be severe.
For a significant portion of the country, the U.S. government will never, ever be trusted again. Tens of millions of Americans will understand that they have become strangers in their own land and designated enemies of the State by their own government. They will accept that America can never be the same again. And there’s the rub for the lawless Deep State. The illusion of republican virtue, constitutional rights, due process, honest democratic elections, and protections for personal liberty will irrevocably disappear.
Tick-tock, tick-tock, look out! Eric Holder’s Marxist brigades are on the march, and the Black Book of Communism remains both their blueprint and their bloody monument to murder in the name of “social justice” and “good intentions.” As the regime takes another heavy step toward Soviet Russia’s gulag system, it takes one more dangerous step closer to mass arrests, political prisoner camps, and even public executions. It is always totalitarianism’s way. Americans must wake up before it is too late. They will. Stay strong. Have faith.

A reminder to those in today’s progressive and woke establishment who forgot about Georgia changing its election laws after the 2020 cycle. The world went ballistic, claiming it to be racist voter suppression and Jim Crow 2.0. Major League Baseball moved the all-star game out of Atlanta to punish the state. There was a lot of angst and handwringing coming from major corporations, such as Delta Airline, which has its headquarters in Atlanta, when the CEO ‘blasted’ the new law as ‘unacceptable’ and ‘based on a lie.’
But there has been a record turnout in the special election for a Senate seat between two black men over the last couple of weeks where over 1.5 million early votes have been cast. This is a prime example of the hysteria that always originates from the establishment that is never true and has destroyed their credibility. Yet they keep doing this kind of thing over and over again. Political persecution of Donald Trump is another example of this kind of thing.
Although the 2020 election technically wasn’t rigged, it was manipulated in the name of the pandemic that was clearly unconstitutional in key states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia, and Wisconsin, when changes were made to benefit the Democrats without first going through state legislatures. More than likely the Supreme Court declined to hear the legal challenge that came to them was because it was such a hot potato, meaning they knew exactly what would happen if they took the case and ruled that the changes were unconstitutional. It would have literally set the country on fire much in the same way George Floyd’s death ignited a year of unprecedented rioting and mayhem.
Manipulation is the key word when it comes to the Democrats. Calls to pack the Supreme Court and the Senate, eliminate the filibuster, and change the way the Electoral College works all point to the fact the Democrats and the Left never rest in their nonstop efforts to manipulate the political and judicial systems to their advantage. In a way, they really are geniuses in identifying ways to manipulate the system. They’re not always successful, but they’re always trying, and for now they’ve succeeded in changing the way elections work in many states by making mail-in voting, ballot drop boxes, and ballot harvesting legal. Democrats can get away with these ongoing shenanigans, especially the coverup of the coverup of the Hunter Biden laptop story, is because nearly every major institution in the country is controlled by progressives in positions of authority at those institutions, most in the corporate mainstream media.
There’s been a lot of talk lately using terns like “ruling class” and “the elites.” This is who they’re referring to, those who can now influence social policy unilaterally and in the process. You can say with a fair amount of confidence that society and culture is clearly rigged in favor of today’s progressives. It’s almost as if they were lying in wait for the pandemic and George Floyd’s death to happen so they could unleash all of their power on the rest of the country. This came in the form of lockdowns, masks, social distancing, vaccine mandates, censorship, wokeness, and cancel culture, almost entirely implemented by unelected people both inside and outside of government.
Is the world really a better place when a major league baseball and football team got rid of their names, a black woman wearing an apron was removed from bottles of maple syrup, and a squaw was removed from butter containers all in the name of social justice? It’s totally laughable, but these are all examples of the top-down cancel culture the country has been experiencing since 2020. Every day there are numerous articles identifying the rotten woke establishment consolidating its control. Here are links to four of them recently posted to their respective websites: “From Social Credit to Social Control,” “How Corrupt is a Corrupt Media?” “Lady Hussey and the Tyranny of Identity,” “Rising Wokeness in Medical School is a Problem for Patients Everywhere.”
A much more ominous example of the power of the ruling class coming completely out of the closet in asserting control was the firing of a partner in a Los Angeles-based law firm. She had committed the unpardonable sin of expressing her support during an internal conference call for the Supreme Court Dobbs v Jackson decision that overturned the landmark Roe v Wade decision legalizing abortion nationwide. She simply agreed with the Supreme Court that abortion is an issue that should be returned to the states to decide whether to make it legal or not.

Yet, rather than supporting the brave protesters who are defying the tyranny of their Communist masters, the Biden administration appears reluctant to comment on the turmoil. President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan have all avoided commenting on the unrest.
Biden’s reticence about commentating on the disturbances in China may be explained by his recent three-hour meeting with Xi at the G20 summit in Indonesia, when the two leaders agreed to de-escalate tensions on contentious issues, such as Taiwan, as well as by a growing body of evidence that he appears to have been seriously politically compromised by lavish deals between “CCP-linked Individuals & Companies” and the Biden family.
Such craven conduct typifies the response of American officialdom to the malign rule of the ayatollahs, which has seen an estimated 500 Iranians killed — including women and children — during the regime’s brutal repression of anti-government protests, with another 18,000 protesters taken into detention.
The Biden administration’s unwillingness, moreover, to lend its support to anti-regime protesters in despotic states such as China and Iran is certainly short-sighted, as it encourages regime officials in the belief that they can act with impunity against their opponents.
At a moment when China and Iran, two of the world’s most despotic regimes, are being consumed by waves of protests, the Biden administration’s overly cautious approach is sending entirely the wrong signal to those campaigning for freedom and liberty in their respective countries. At a moment when China and Iran, two of the world’s most despotic regimes, are being consumed by waves of protests, the Biden administration’s overly cautious approach is sending entirely the wrong signal to those campaigning for freedom and liberty in their respective countries.
In what is being hailed as the largest anti-government protest movement China has experienced since the unrest in 1989 that culminated with the Tiananmen Square massacre, nearly all of China’s major cities have witnessed large crowds taking to the streets to protest against the Communist Party’s dictatorial rule.
The protests initially began in response to the deaths of ten people in a fire at an apartment block in Xinjiang province. The fires were blamed on Beijing’s draconian “zero-Covid” policy, which has resulted in millions of Chinese suspected of being in contact with the virus being locked in their apartments for weeks on end.
Since then they have grown into a nationwide protest movement which increasingly is calling for radical changes in the way the country is governed rather than demanding an easing of the Covid restrictions.
Of particular concern for China’s Communist rulers will be the prominent role the nation’s students are playing in the disturbances, where they are protesting against the regime’s restrictions on freedom of speech and heavy-handed political control.
In one demonstration at Beijing’s Tsinghua University earlier this week, students were recorded chanting the slogan “Democracy, rule of law and freedom of speech.”
The emergence of China’s restless student population in the anti-government protests will be a matter of deep concern for the authorities, as students were in the vanguard of the 1989 pro-democracy movement that ultimately resulted in the Tiananmen Square massacre.
The Chinese authorities have worked hard to clamp down on student protests in the intervening decades, so the fact that the students are once more playing a central role in the unrest would be deeply disconcerting for the country’s Communist masters.
It should also send a signal to US President Joe Biden that the position of his Chinese opposite number, Xi Jinping, is not as secure as he would like the outside world to believe. Only last month, Xi was awarded an unprecedented third term as leader at the Communist Party’s 20th National Congress.
From Washington’s perspective, the eruption of a protest movement that is directly challenging the Communist Party’s autocratic rule should be seen as a positive development, as it demonstrates that there are significant political divisions in a country that has become America’s main superpower rival.
Yet, rather than supporting the brave protesters who are defying the tyranny of their Communist masters, the Biden administration appears reluctant to comment on the turmoil. Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan have all avoided commenting on the unrest.
The “see no evil, hear no evil” approach of the Biden administration certainly contrasts sharply with that adopted by Beijing when the U.S. experiences its own political challenges. Following the storming of the US Capitol last year, commentators in the state-owned Chinese media indulged in a wave of mockery, comparing the violence with anti-government protests in Hong Kong and accusing Washington of hypocrisy.
Iran is another country that is experiencing enormous political turmoil, but where American officials are also proving reticent to support the wave of anti-regime protests, as is evident from the craven behaviour of the US Soccer Federation (USSF) at the World Cup currently taking place in the Gulf state of Qatar.
Prior to America’s game with Iran on Tuesday, the USSF’s website briefly displayed Iran’s national flag without the emblem representing the Islamic Republic. But after Tehran reacted furiously to the omission, which was taken as a gesture of support with anti-regime protesters in Iran, the USSF quickly deleted the graphic, reinstating the Islamic Republic’s emblem.
This is a grave miscalculation, as the most effective way of challenging autocratic regimes such as those in power in China and Iran is to lend encouragement to those seeking to challenge the legitimacy of their rule.
For it is only when these regimes are forced to acknowledge they no longer enjoy the support of the people that they will ultimately be persuaded to undertake wholesale reforms.
