Normal Girls, NOT the Lefty Strained, Play Dolls by Nature

by John Hinderaker   at PowerLine:

I’m a day late with this, so you likely have already seen it: Jill Abramson, former Executive Editor of the New York Times, told the Guardian that she keeps a Barack Obama doll in her purse and calls on it for comfort in the distressing Age of Trump:

It’s easy to look at what’s happening in Washington DC and despair. That’s why I carry a little plastic Obama doll in my purse. I pull him out every now and then to remind myself that the United States had a progressive, African American president until very recently. Some people find this strange, but you have to take comfort where you can find it in Donald Trump’s America.

OK, that’s pretty funny. But the rest of Abramson’s column strikes me as more significant. Why? Because she makes no pretense of being anything other than a Democratic Party operative. Writing for the Guardian’s far-left audience, she is among friends. Any pretense of objectivity is gone.

Abramson’s main subject is the Democratic Party’s hope for a win in the midterm elections. She focuses on Texas, which I wrote about here:

With new Democratic voters racing to the polls in big numbers in Tuesday’s primaries, Texas is looking purple rather than Republican red. …

Though their optimism may be premature, national Democrats think Ted Cruz can be defeated in November by a well-funded liberal House member from El Paso with the name of Beto O’Rourke, who just won his state’s Democratic Senate nomination.

Abramson exults over the Texas primary, but somehow omits to mention that Cruz drew a half million more votes than O’Rourke, even though he faced no perceptible opposition. Still, Abramson is triumphant:

Republican gloom in Washington DC is palpable, with White House chaos, Donald Trump’s sinking approval ratings and incumbent retirements piling up.

Though winning control of the House of Representatives in 2018 is their focus, my Democratic sources say that there are already 20 credible presidential challengers giving serious thought to opposing Donald Trump in 2020. The list, unsurprisingly, includes a raft of Democratic senators, and, perhaps surprisingly, at least three strong women, New York’s Kirsten Gillibrand, Minnesota’s Amy Klobuchar and Massachusetts’s Elizabeth Warren.

The Democratic Party cheerleading goes on and on. This is the piece’s conclusion, but for the part about the Obama doll:

Of course, there are months to go until November and Beto [O’Rourke] has to be considered an underdog. Still, it’s thrilling to see signs of a Trump rebellion building in the Solid South, the Republican base where religion, racism and love of guns have advantaged Republicans since Richard Nixon’s election in 1968.

Here’s my point: Abramson hates Republicans (“racism!”) and is an unapologetic Obama (and O’Rourke, and Warren, and Gillebrand, etc.) fangirl. But that didn’t begin recently. Abramson was Executive Editor of the Times from 2011 to 2014, after spending pretty much her whole career there. (Nothing if not loyal, she even has a tattoo of the Times logo.) She is out of the closet now, especially, perhaps, when writing for the Guardian. But is there any reason to think that she ran the Times’s newsroom as anything but a Democratic Party operative? No. In fact, those who read the Times during her years at the helm can attest that the paper shared her enthusiasms as well as her hatreds.

Still: I am not easily shocked, but I do think that Abramson’s out-of-the-closet turn as a doll-carrying Obama Democrat is disturbing.”

ghr..Comment:   No matter how hard  I try, I cannot imagine Hillary  Clinton EVER playing dolls at any age.   She could have collected snakes for fun….. Perhaps husband Bill noticed that early in his age with the Hill.

Trump Rallies Support for Rick Saccone in Pennsylvania

I attended our GOP State Senate District Convention Call yesterday  morning.   Republicans where I live in a western suburb of Minneapolis  haven’t quite managed to run an orderly, inspiring  meeting for years.

Crooked Hillary easily gobbled up  Hennepin County in 2016 which includes Black Racist and Super Feminist Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, Brooklyn Park, Bloomington, and the Minnetonka where I live.    Most of the wealthy and Big Business super wealthy  of this Goopher land America buy enough leftist Democrats to own  the state and most of  its U.S. Congressional Districts politically.

Yet, OUR DONALD nearly beat Crooked Hillary in 2016.   Our Minnesota was either THE very last STATE or the second to the last STATE to declare a winner that Presidential election year the tally was so close.   Donald won all but 9 of Gopherland’s  87 counties.     Minnetonka folks, however,  preferred  liar Hillary  big time .

And then there is our  fascist GOOGLE speech control police who,  according to reports from many circles, make conservative sentences and paragraphs, even entire articles they disagree with disappear from these pages if deemed sufficiently unObamaloving.

Our Dennis Prager has recently challenged National Google’s Fascism habits  in a national court case.

February 22, 1980…..That Miracle of American Sports! USA 4 USSR 3

More than half of the members of the 1980 American Olympic hockey team,  perhaps 14 players in all, were raised in, or learned their hockey  from my own state of Minnesota.

Wintertime between 1955 to 1965 I attended over 300 Minnesota high school hockey games.  I was the state high school boy  hockey ratings guy for the Sunday St. Paul Pioneer Press.    Roseau, Thief River Falls,  International Falls, Duluth East, Grand Rapids,  Eveleth, St. Paul Johnson, Minneapolis Roosevelt, Edina  were the hockey powerhouses perennially  leading  the ratings from 1947 through the 1960s.    St. Paul Johnson was THE hockey powerhouse  from the Twin City in  those days…..winning State championships in 1947, 1953, 1955,  and 1963.

Herbie Brooks starred at  St. Paul Johnson High School leading the school into  two state tournament victories,  1953 to 1955.  He was an awkward skater from hip to ankles, rather slow in the speed,  yet he starred because he was a star.   He was so clever on the attack with the puck under his control, spectators and competing players often seemed to  fell  he could ‘deek’ the goal posts.

In all of the twenty or more years attending Minnesota  High School  State Tournaments, I never saw a player who could out maneuver a defender as easily at this kid.   Herbie Brooks was a genius with the puck at the end of his hockey stick…..clever player who loved the game, a winner, who had a brain far more skilled than his legs.   HE WAS A WINNER by drive and  because of that brain!

(I think Herbie actually  majored in psychology while at the University of Minnesota, back then when the University really meant something in learnings.   This Herbie was focused that 1979-1980!)

I was not surprised that Herbie decided to play the Olympic Soviet team  (for practice) a couple weeks before the Olympic games began, losing 10-3,  at Madison Square Garden!   I was not surprised he’d work the blood out of his Olympic team players whether they liked it or not, during every practice until the Olympic competitions began.  I was not at all surprised that his superbly-coached team had managed to remain  undefeated by the time they had to play the Soviets.

Herbie was in charge!

Minnesota boy high school players in the 1980s were becoming more spoiled in their athletic surroundings than in the years gone by.  They didn’t have to play critical outdoor games in minus 15 degree temperatures any more……such as a critical  outdoor game  I watched in Roseau when the team  played St. Paul Johnson one January.

Mark Johnson blood came from Minnesota.   I knew his dad, Bob Johnson quite well.  ….a First Class Guy, if there ever was one!  He was a star coach at Minneapolis Roosevelt….and a ‘side kick’ of mine when we took graduate school classes together in the College of Education at the University of Minnesota before he came to coach hockey at the University of Wisconsin.

Herbie Brooks was a  genius coaching at that level at  that time to that Olympic victory that year, AD 1980!  It was made to be by our Creator!  His young, rather spoiled youthful team was tortured into mental, physical strength into  resolution and  endurance throughout those many  months of practice leading up to that Miracle on Ice……Team USA  was a much stronger, better balanced USA hockey team playing the Soviets during the last fifteen minutes than the first 45!   Take a look below during that third period following the Eruzione go-ahead  goal with ten minutes left!

Sweet Flake, Eugene Robinson, Popular Urban Leftist, Blames Guns’ Brainy Ability to Think, Travel, Select Victims

The Issue Is Not Mental Health. It’s Guns.

WASHINGTON — Don’t tell me the issue is mental health. Save the nonsense about “good guys” with weapons somehow being the answer. The truth is this: There would have been no tragic shooting Wednesday in Parkland, Florida, if a troubled young man had not gotten his hands on a military-style assault rifle and as much ammunition as he wanted.

Many people knew that Nikolas Cruz was troubled, violent and liable to explode. Yet nothing kept him from acquiring the gun he allegedly used to kill 17 students and faculty members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in yet another senseless slaughter of the kind that still shocks but no longer surprises.

President Trump addressed the nation, saying we must “answer hate with love” and vowing to “tackle the difficult issue of mental health.” But he made no mention of gun control — meaning he might as well have said nothing at all.

According to news reports in The Washington Post and other outlets, Cruz, 19, had been repeatedly suspended and then expelled from the high school for disciplinary problems. He had sought and received treatment at a mental health clinic, but stopped attending. He showed signs of depression. His posts on social media were so unsettling that they scared acquaintances away. His father died several years ago and his mother, with whom he was close, passed away around Thanksgiving. The leader of a white nationalist group claimed that Cruz was a member.

And he had a fetish for guns.

To say there were warning signs about Cruz is a gross understatement. There were flashing red lights and blaring sirens.

“I think everyone in this school had it in the back of their mind that if anyone was supposed to do it, it was most likely going to be him,” a former classmate told the Post — “do it” meaning the kind of homicidal rampage we saw Wednesday. A math teacher at the school told the Miami Herald that Cruz had threatened students before being expelled, and that “he wasn’t allowed on campus with a backpack on him.”

It was obvious that a tragedy might be coming. Yet, as a society, we refused to take the steps that could have prevented it.

How many alienated and disturbed young men are out there, rattling around peaceful suburbs like Parkland? Many thousands, surely. Some will get the help they need; some won’t. Most will never act on their violent urges; some will.

It is impossible to imagine a mental health system with the scope, authority and resources necessary to prevent every Parkland or Newtown or Columbine. In Cruz’s case, in fact, the existing system worked: He got professional help. School administrators knew he could pose a threat. According to news reports, a tipster even tried to alert the FBI that Cruz wanted to be “a professional school shooter.”

Yet in February 2017, Cruz was able to legally purchase an AR-15-style assault rifle from a local gun shop. With no criminal record or anything else in his past that would raise an official red flag, he sailed through a background check.

Apologists for the National Rifle Association will cynically use this circumstance to argue against a common-sense measure that four out of five Americans support: universal background checks for gun purchases. That wouldn’t have stopped the Parkland massacre, they will claim — diverting attention from the fact that universal checks could have prevented some mass shootings in the past and would surely prevent some in the future.

At the heart of the matter, though, lies the gun.

There are disturbed individuals like Cruz in countries around the world, but only the United States suffers mass shootings so regularly that they have almost become routine. Why? Because you can’t shoot up a school or a night club or a country music concert the way it was done in Parkland, Orlando and Las Vegas if you don’t have access to weapons of war that were designed for the battlefield.

The Supreme Court has made clear that the Second Amendment, while guaranteeing the right to keep and bear arms, is not absolute. The Bill of Rights was written in the era of muskets and dueling pistols. We don’t allow private citizens to own surface-to-air missiles capable of downing an airliner, so why do we let them own assault rifles designed not to shoot targets or game but to kill human beings in large numbers?

This is madness. Look at those grieving parents in Parkland. Know that because of the NRA, others surely will soon join their ranks…..

(ghr:   Wow!  Can those guns sure get around to cause trouble!!!!   I wonder how they can drive cars, pay bus fares, pull their triggers!)

Franken and LeAnn in the news

by Scott Johnson at PowerLine:

Al Franken is a well-known jerk. I would say that just about everyone who has dealt with him personally knows it, including Senator Amy Klobuchar and his other Senate colleagues. One can see the pure manifestation of this aspect of his character in his treatment of Leeann Tweeden as set forth in her powerful first-person account of his unwanted attention.

Franken has issued two statements in response to Tweeden’s account today. First he offered a cursory attempt at exculpation. As his colleagues abandoned him, Franken sensed he couldn’t talk his way out of this jam. He abjectly apologized and joined the call for the Senate Ethics Committee investigation of his own conduct.

Very big of him, but more calculating than generous. He can reasonably hope that the Ethics Committee will give him cover in the slow moving gears of Senate procedures while the storm blows over.

The abjectness of Franken’s second statement should count for nothing. Tweeden’s account of Franken’s harassment includes a photograph that caught Franken in the act of sexual assault. Despite his effort to say something to mitigate it in his first statement, mitigation is impossible under the circumstances. His initial statement reveals his character and aggravates his misconduct. It is otherwise worthless.

The photograph is a killer. It is incriminating, but it is more than that. In the context of Tweeden’s account, it is devastating. It shows Franken gleefully humiliating Tweeden. It demonstrates his malice.

Sexual misconduct of the Franken kind is almost never a one-off. It is characteristic or compulsive. There are undoubtedly other women like Tweeden who have received Franken’s unwanted attention. One can only hope that they will have the courage to come out and face down the jerk.
