Dershowitz: Why Does the Media Encourage Hamas to Attack Israel?

by Alan Dershowitz at Washington Examiner:

If this were the first time that Hamas deliberately provoked Israel into self-defense actions that resulted in the unintended deaths of Gaza civilians, the media could be excused for playing into the hands of Hamas.

The most recent Hamas provocations — having 40,000 Gazans try to tear down the border fence and enter Israel with Molotov cocktails and other improvised weapons — are part of a repeated Hamas tactic that I have called the “dead baby strategy.” The goal of Hamas is to have Israel kill as many Gazans as possible so that the headlines always begin, and often end, with the body count. Hamas deliberately sends women and children to the front line, while their own fighters hide behind these human shields.

Hamas leaders have long acknowledged this tactic. Fathi Hammad, a Hamas member of the Palestinian Legislative Council, stated as far back as 2008, “For the Palestinian people, death has become an industry, at which women excel, and so do all the people living on this land. The elderly excel at this, and so do the mujahideen and the children. This is why they have formed human shields of the women, the children, the elderly, and the mujahideen, in order to challenge the Zionist bombing machine. It is as if they were saying to the Zionist enemy, ‘We desire death like you desire life.’”

Hamas used this tactic to provoke two wars with Israel in which their fighters fired rockets from civilian areas, including hospitals, schools, and mosques. When Israel responded, it tried its best to avoid civilian casualties, dropping warning leaflets, calling residents of potential targets and dropping nonlethal noise bombs on the roofs of houses that were being used to launch rockets and store explosives. Inevitably, some civilians were killed, and the media blamed Israel for these deaths, despite the precautions it had taken.

The same was true when Hamas built terror tunnels used to kidnap Israeli civilians. The entrances to these tunnels were in civilian areas as well, including mosques and schools. Using their own civilians as human shields, while targeting Israeli civilians, is a double war crime. Yet, the media generally focuses on the reaction of Israel to these war crimes, rather than the war crimes of Hamas.

The cruel reality is that every time Israel accidentally kills a Gaza civilian, Israel loses. And every time Israel kills a Gaza civilian, Hamas wins. Israelis grieve every civilian death its army accidentally causes. Hamas benefits from every death Israel accidentally causes. That is why it encourages its women and children to become martyrs.

Calling this the “dead baby strategy” may seem cruel because it is cruel. But don’t blame the messenger for accurately describing this tactic. Blame those who cynically use it. Blame the media for playing into the hands of those who use it by reporting only the body count and not the deliberate Hamas tactic that leads to one-sided body counts.

It is true that Gaza is in a desperate situation and that it is wounded. But the wound itself is self-inflicted. When Israel ended its occupation of Gaza, removing every single soldier and settler, the territory could have become the Singapore on the Mediterranean Sea. It is a beautiful area with a large seacoast. It received infusions of cash and other help from Europe. Israel left behind agricultural equipment and hot houses.

But instead of using these resources to feed, house, and educate its citizens, Hamas built rockets, terror tunnels, and Molotov cocktails. It threw dissenters off the roof and murdered members of the Palestinian Authority who were willing to recognize Israel and negotiate with it. Hamas rejects the two-state solution or any solution that leaves Israel intact. The only solution for it is violence, and the events at the fence these past days are a manifestation of that violence.

Would any country in the world allow 40,000 people, sworn to its destruction, to knock down a border fence and attack its citizens living peacefully near the border? Of course not. Could Israel have done more to reduce casualties among those trying to breach the border fence? I don’t know, and neither do the legions of armchair generals who are criticizing Israel for the steps it took to prevent a catastrophe among the residents of Kibbutzim and towns that are proximate to the border fence.

One thing is crystal clear: Hamas will continue to use the ”dead baby strategy” as long as the media continues to report the deaths in the manner in which it has reported them in recent weeks. Many in the media are complicit in these deaths because their one-sided reporting encourages Hamas to send innocent women and children to the front line. Perhaps Israel could do a better job of defending its civilians but it is certain that the media can do a better job of accurately reporting the Hamas strategy that results in so many innocent deaths.

There is a marvelous cartoon that illustrates the difference between Hamas and Israel. It shows an Israeli soldier standing in front of a stroller with a baby in it, shielding the baby. Then it shows a Hamas terrorist standing behind a stroller with the baby in it, using the baby to shield him. This cartoon better illustrates the reality that is occurring at the Gaza fence than most of the “objective” reporting by the media.

The Jerusalem Business

A GREAT DAY IN JERUSALEM [UPDATED]

by John Hinderaker  at PowerLine:

Today the U.S. opened our new embassy in Jerusalem. It is about time: for quite a few years, Congress has resolved that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital, but one president after another has deferred recognizing that reality, deferring, apparently, to the international consensus that every country on Earth except Israel has the right to designate its capital. I wrote here:

The location of Israel’s capital is a question of fact, not opinion, and it is up to Israel. The Arabs may not like it, but Jerusalem is Israel’s capital: the Knesset is in Jerusalem, the Supreme Court is in Jerusalem, the Prime Minister’s office and official residence are in Jerusalem, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and most other government offices are in Jerusalem. To deny that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel is as silly as denying that Paris is the capital of France.

All credit to President Trump for making good, once again, on his campaign promises. Prime Minister Netanyahu was almost giddy at today’s ceremony:

“What a glorious day,” Netanyahu told the crowd at the new embassy building in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Arnona. “Remember this moment, this is history. President Trump, by recognizing history, you have made history.”

“Today, the embassy of the most powerful country on earth, our friend and ally, the United States of America, opens in Jerusalem,” he exclaimed.

“We have no better friends in the world,” Netanyahu told the American guests.

Addressing Kushner and Ivanka Trump, he said, “Your presence here today is a testament to the importance of this occasion,” and thanked them for their “pursuit of peace.”

Ivanka standing next to the plaque on the embassy wall:

It was a great day, a festive day, a day when reality triumphed–at least for the moment–over the ugly cloud of anti-Semitism that insists Israel must not be treated like every other nation.

Hamas tried to mar the occasion by inciting some of its benighted followers to a suicidal charge against the Israeli border. Inevitably, some of them were killed. Death follows Hamas like a bad smell. But the terrorists’ futile gestures did nothing to diminish the historic events that took place in Jerusalem.

UPDATE: One more thing. Note that the plaque says, “Jerusalem, Israel.” Well, yeah. But that too is a step forward, when compared with Trump’s pusillanimous predecessor:

Earlier today, the White House released a transcript of President Obama’s remarks at the memorial service for Shimon Peres, which took place at the Mount Herzl cemetery in Jerusalem. Later, the White House sent out a “corrected” transcript that struck out the word “Israel” after “Jerusalem.”

Here is the Obama White House’s “correction.” The word “Israel” is struck out of the dateline:

Then there is the whole passport controversy, as our State Department refuses to recognize Jerusalem as a part of Israel. As in so many other areas, the swamp will resist the President as long as it can.

Comment by ghr:  I remember listening to  President Harry S. Truman announcement on radio in 1948  that our United States recognized  the state of Israel as a sovereign nation.   That was the beginning of  the Islamic wars to wipe the Jewish state off the map.   That side of  warriorhood  seems to be still at it….and then there is the Irani fascisti Islamists to whom that  American President with the Islamic name, Barack Hussein Obama donated billions of dollars of American tax money to develop their nuclear weapons to make the Jewish independent state of Israel disappear.
About 70% of the American Jewish population religiously votes leftist, that is Democrat ever since I was born…..almost feverishly during Obama time in Washington playing tootsie with the most obnoxious fascists in Near East.
Adam B. Schiff, a Congress occupier from California is far, far  more devious and dishonest  than crooked Hillary every time he stars on television.
I followed today’s Jerusalem ceremony  on Fox Business this morning.   Conservative Prime Minister Netanyahu, my Israeli hero,  was overwhelmed with joy throughout the entire event……especially when referring to our American President, Donald Trump who made the home of our American Embassy in Jerusalem, the Jewish capital city finally a reality.

President Trump Zaps Continuing Obama’s Iran Nuclear Weapon Deal

Mark Waldeland sent the following article regarding President Trump’s withdrawal from Barack Obama’s dictating the “Iran Deal”

from  LOUDER WITH CROWDER, by John Porter:

THE TRUTH ABOUT PULLING OUT OF IRAN DEAL

The Iran deal has always been terrible. Today is a reminder that if you live by the Presidency, you die by the Presidency. We ought to be clear about this: Donald Trump isn’t ripping up a treaty; he’s walking away from Barack Obama’s personal pledge. Two and a half years ago, President Obama made a bad deal with Iran without support from Congress, and today President Trump is pulling out of President Obama’s personal commitment, and he doesn’t need Congress’s support to do so. American foreign policy makes lasting progress when it is led by the President, approved by Congress, and presented honestly to the American people.

A WORD FITLY SPOKEN

by Scott Johnson   at PowerLine:

I give President Trump credit for brevity, insight, and judgment in his tweet below commenting on the sinister collusion of Monsieur John F. Kerry with the regime in Tehran that is, not coincidentally, an enemy of the United States. You know, the one that lives by the motto “Death to America.”

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

The United States does not need John Kerry’s possibly illegal Shadow Diplomacy on the very badly negotiated Iran Deal. He was the one that created this MESS in the first place.

Trump uncharacteristically understates his case here. The United States not only doesn’t need John’s Kerry’s shadow diplomacy, it would be better off without it. And the problem with Kerry’s diplomacy is not its possible illegality, it’s his persistence in seeking to perpetuate (to borrow a phrase) the worst deal ever. But the latter point is one I borrow from Trump himself.

Incidentally, in the interest of accuracy, it should be noted that the impending May 12 deadline does not relate to certification of the deal or not. It relates to the continued waiver of statutory sanctions.

Supreme Court Leftists Question President’s Call to Halt Islamic Countries from Sending Assasins to America

SUPREME COURT SKEPTICAL OF ATTACK ON TRUMP TRAVEL BAN

by Paul Mirengoff   at PowerLine:

The Supreme Court heard oral argument today on President Trump’s proposed ban on travel to the United States from a handful of countries nearly all of which happen to be predominantly Muslim. Things went considerably better for the attorney defending the travel ban (Solicitor General Noel Francisco) than for the attorney challenging it (Neal Katyal).

The New York Times’ account is hereThis is the report of ScotusBlog’s Amy Howe. This is the transcript of the argument. It’s worth reading.

In the Times’ view, the Court’s “five-member conservative majority signal[ed] it was ready to approve a revised version of the president’s plan.” Howe reports that the “travel ban seems likely to survive [the] Supreme Court’s review.

Opponents of the ban were hoping that Chief Justice Roberts and/or Justice Kennedy would join the court’s four-member liberal wing to strike it down. This is still possible. However, neither Justice seemed receptive to Katyal’s arguments against the ban.

Chief Justice Roberts was all over Katyal early and often with skeptical and politely hostile questions. Kennedy was less involved, but nearly all of his questions were adverse to Katyal’s position.

Even Justice Kagan seemed troubled by aspects of Katyal’s argument. Kagan noted that the president’s order highlighted important national security concerns. She then asked how the Supreme Court is supposed to determine the legality of the president’s order without evaluating these national-security concerns.

Kagan seemed uncomfortable with the Court engaging in such evaluation. Kennedy did too. They should be. Evaluating security concerns is a role far better suited to the executive branch than to the courts.

I’m not predicting the government will gain Justice Kagan’s vote. However, Howe reminds us that when the justices granted the government’s request last December to enforce the full set of restrictions in the current incarnation of the travel ban while its appeals moved forward, only two justices – Ginsburg and Sotomayor – publicly disagreed with that decision.

Howe concludes:

That would have given the government reason to be optimistic, and today’s argument might have reinforced that optimism: Although it’s always risky to make predictions based on the oral argument, it’s difficult to see how Hawaii can pick up the five votes that it needs to strike down the president’s order.

Miners in the Dictatorship of Global Warming Canada Find 110 Million Year Old Dinosaur

Now folks, Canada is to the North of our Minnesota in case you have forgotten.  The confused majority population voting  there endures  a loonier, far more leftist and intolerant government from the Atlantic to the Pacific than our Minnesota’s motherland.   And they worship the Al Gore global warming commandment that American invention and industry over the past century are responsible for the disappearance of breathable air throughout the world.

Shame on Abraham Lincoln.

Doomsday is just around the corner……yet….

Sixty five million years ago Saskatchewan, North and South Dakota were nesting and hunting grounds for Tyrannus Rex and countless other dinosaurs eating each other up and fertilizing Mother Earth.    Suddenly back  then some damned piece of rock  “flew in”  from outer space diving to its “death”  in the Gulf of Mexico and ruined everything, well 90% of everything living on Earth  at the time.    Global warming disappeared for quite awhile.

Had I lived about fifteen million years ago here in the Twin City, Minnesota area where I write, eat, landscape garden, and sleep, no astronaut or kin from outer space could have found me or anyone else in our 2,000,000 population community.   We would all be buried or doing our shopping under 500 feet or more of ice…..so Thank God for Global Warming!!

In Canada, MINERS, not MAIDENS stumbled across something unexpected recently.  Please read further to see what they found:

The Fraud Secretary John Kerry vs. the Quality Secretary of State Appointee, Mike Pompeo

ADVICE AND DESCENT

by Scott Johnson  at PowerLine:

In Allen Drury’s Advise and Consent, still in print after all these years, the president’s left-wing nominee for Secretary of State has a secret. As a young man — echoes of the Hiss case — he was a member of a Communist cell.

Leffingwell’s Communist past is a secret that must be covered up. Complications ensue, giving life to a Washington novel that is one of our favorites. Novelist Thomas Mallon rendered his considered literary judgment in his fiftieth anniversary tribute to the novel.

Times have changed, big league. By the time President Obama nominated John Kerry as Secretary of State, what were once vices had become habits hardly worthy of mention in polite company (as in this Boston Globe backgrounder).

Kerry had been wrong on just about every foreign policy issue he has addressed in the course of a long public career, stretching back to 1971. As an undergraduate, I saw him in person speaking on campus at the Hopkins Center peddling the vicious lies that turned him into a national celebrity. I believed him because I was credulous and sophomoric, but what excuse did he have?

Like Leffingwell, Kerry had been worse than mistaken. But it was no secret. It was out there in the open, and the guy nevertheless came within a hair of being elected president in 2004. John Perazzo reviewed the record of the man Obama saluted as “the perfect choice” to be his Secretary of State: “The historical record informs us that not only has John Kerry been on the wrong side of every major foreign policy issue for most of his adult life, including Iraq, Nicaragua and most recently in Syria, but he has routinely engaged in deception to conceal his folly. What’s worse, Kerry has a clear record of giving aid and comfort to America’s enemies, all the while never missing an opportunity to viciously trash our brave forces fighting against them.”

Returning to Advise and Consent, I recall recall that a key plot point hangs on the blackmailing of the senior senator from Utah in connection with a youthful homosexual affair. He is threatened with disclosure of the affair if he fails to vote in favor of the left-wing nominee. Rather than submit he commits suicide.

President Trump’s nomination of CIA Director Mike Pompeo to serve as Secretary of State is to be voted on by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee next week. Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s Democrats have united in opposition. Given the additional opposition of Rand Paul, observers anticipate that Pompeo will receive a negative recommendation from the committee. Marc Thiessen traces the historic (and disgraceful) nature of such a negative committee vote against a Secretary of State nominee in this column.

One of the Democrats’ points against Pompeo is his disapproval of homosexual sex and homosexual marriage. He is apparently guilty of subscribing to traditional Christian doctrine. If only Pompeo could reveal himself to be a man with a homosexual past proclaiming “correct” thoughts, he might qualify to serve as Secretary of State. Coincidentally, the Democrats would also prefer a nominee who vowed to continue the Obama administration’s love affair with the mullahs who hang Iranian homosexuals for “male to male anal intercourse.”

We are reminded once once again. Democrats, you’ve come a long way from Advise and Consent, from advice and consent, and from the Constitution, baby.

P.S.   A Cause to Remember, by Glenn H. Ray

I am wondering if anyone of any American  party of any kind remembers the profound frauds JFK….that is, John F. Kerry perpetrated while serving and fibbing about his stardom “on military duty” in Vietnam…..the time when he was movie producing about his phony heroism for future political play when he returned to home to enter the lefty  jungles of Massachusetts politics.

Has anyone ever written a book, a page, a paragraph about this contemptible phony  maneuverings in film stardom, directed by the fraud himself?   He became CBS, PBS, ABC, and NBC star playboy at evening news hour playing expert about his false prowess, phony heroism,  absent wisdom and profound fraud on his road to Congress, the Senate   and Presidential contender.

(He did marry into the Heinz fortune, however!)

Why was it likely that the only  human on any  American  air or print wave of that critical election year, 2004, who had the courage, knowledge, the skill,  and honesty to  describe   this  suitless,  JFKerry,   so perfectly as the “creature, fraud and twit” he was came from Our Dennis Prager   that late October radio broadcasting day in 2004……..the first day I,  a lonely conservative, discovered him.
