Stop the Federal Attack on State Election Integrity ProcessesUS Attorney General Eric Holder opposes photo ID and any other measures designed to safeguard elections against voter fraud and he’s long used the power of his office to harass states in an effort to prevent them from modernizing their election systems in ways that protect voters and prevent abuses.Holder suffered a setback when the US Supreme Court struck down section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which required federal preclearance for some states to enact any changes to their election laws. Holder had been using that provision to fight photo ID laws and efforts to clean up the voter rolls in several states.
With section 5 struck down, Holder and his allies in Congress are now pushing a bill to amend the Voting Rights act that would give the attorney general even more power to interfere in state election business.
HR3899 is a dangerous, race-based, unconstitutional and un-American piece of legislation that encourages racial gerrymandering and makes race a key factor in elections processes. It also codifies the Holder Justice Department’s current practice of ignoring voting rights violations if committed against non-minorities. The bill specifically excludes non-minorities from the full legal protections of the Voting Rights Act.
If enacted, HR3899 will be used as a new weapon against states that are trying to secure their election process against voter fraud and other abuses and unlike the old Section 5 provision it aims to replace, it won’t be limited to certain southern states. It would give Holder the power to interfere in the election process of any state in the union.
