Carbon Dioxide Ended Last Ice Age

About 10,000-20,000 years ago, Earth started to emerge from a quarter million years of deep freeze as the terrestrial ice sheet rolled back and warmer temperatures prevailed.  A fundamental question in this event is what was the primary trigger that caused the world to gradually warm to its contemporary state, says ABC Science.

There have traditionally been two parties to this discussion that rely on similar external occurrences but different subsequent mechanisms to explain the earth’s warming.

• The first group believes that the earth underwent a gradual orbital change, bringing it closer to the sun, which subsequently warmed the planet and caused slow deglaciation.
• The second group acknowledges that the world likely did undergo some sort of orbital shift, but that this was not sufficient to begin a warming cycle — they argue instead that this triggered a series of events that caused the release of carbon dioxide (CO2), and that this gas was the primary driver.

It can seem difficult to parse the two theories given that they agree upon many of the same events in explaining their respective theories.  However, new data collected from 80 ice cores around the world, which show that CO2 increased suddenly during the deglaciation process, suggest that the second group may be correct.  Dr. Jeremy Shakun of Harvard University explains the precepts of the theory:

• Shakun and colleagues theorize that orbital shift boosted sunlight that warmed the northern hemisphere between 21,500 and 19,000 years ago.
• This caused some of its ice sheet to melt and spill gigatons of chilly freshwater into the North Atlantic.
• The big gush had a dampening effect on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, a well-known “conveyor belt” by which warm water travels northwards on the Atlantic’s surface.
• When the current braked, warm water began to build up in the southern Atlantic, where it swiftly started to warm up Antarctica and the Antarctic Ocean.
• Warming the south in turn shifted the wind and melted sea ice, releasing some of the vast amounts of CO2 that had been absorbed by the ocean and stored in its depths.

This CO2 release, they theorize, was the crucial trigger that turned this relatively insignificant orbital shift into a gradual global warmer that made the planet more hospitable.

Healthy Polar Bear Count Confounds Doomsayers

“In the debate regarding global warming and its significant impacts on the world, the population of polar bears has long been a high-profile rallying point for doomsayers.  Decrying a significant decrease in the bear population over the last few decades, environmentalists have called for specific public policies that directly protect the bear population and broad laws that curb greenhouse gas emissions, says the Globe and Mail (Canada).

However, recent studies of the Nunavut region on the western shore of the Hudson Bay — long recognized as a bellwether for how polar bears are doing elsewhere in the Arctic — suggest strongly that the population is not as in danger as the environmental lobby has suggested.

• In 2004, Environment Canada researchers concluded that the numbers in the region had dropped by 22 percent since 1984, to 935.
• They followed this assertion by estimating that by 2011, the population would face a dramatic decrease to about 610.
• Yet a recent Canadian government study, which involved 8,000 kilometers of aerial surveying last August along the coast and offshore islands, pegs the population at approximately 1,013.

Drikus Gissing, Nunavut’s director of wildlife management, points out that this estimation, if correct, means that the polar bear population is actually managing healthy growth despite the challenges posed by environmental changes and hunting.

Canada’s hunting regulations and rules are crucial in maintaining that population and protecting it from being poached to extinction.  This is because polar bear pelts remain extremely valuable and in high demand in places like China and Russia.

• Prices for some pelts have doubled in the past couple of years, reaching as high as $15,000.
• The Nunavut hunting quota in the western Hudson Bay area fell to eight from 56 after the 2004 report from Environment Canada.
• Even with such quotas, about 450 polar bears are killed annually across Nunavut.

Nevertheless, Gissing points out that there are about 25,000 polar bears across Canada’s Arctic, and that this is likely the highest point the population has ever reached.  This thoroughly undermines the arguments of critics who predicted the species’ rapid endangerment.”

Comment:   What doesn’t the Marxist Left lie about…….or let us write it more ‘lefty-like’…. “provide the American public  information filled with emotion for political posturings,  elections, and academic instruction, but without any strength of truth.

For those of us who do not walk around in polarbear skin, playing around on the ice cap breaking holes in its sheets and jump into the wet and numbings to play and hunt isn’t exactly a human cup of tea.

One of the many problems consuming Lefties however, is that they simply have never been trained to seek and speak  Truth to lead their way of thinking and communicating.

Barack Hussein Obama is a stellar Marxist in speech and acion.    Study him well and appreciate his Marxist talents.

Remember the Obama Cap and Trade Law his lefties had cooked up to spend taxpayer dollars, $1,000,000,000,000 of them to give,  GIVE to third world countries to  cover their carbon emissions excesses?  It was a punishment for Americans being so successful in its  free enterprise past.

The Politics of Bad Faith

Hmm. Somebody should write a book with that title. A frequent email correspondent offers an important example of the bad faith that permeates liberals’ political discourse:

As the baby boomers retire and health costs continue to grow, more revenues will be needed. For Democrats who have spent the last decade convincing members of the middle class that they will forever be exempt from tax increases, that’s going to be a tough about-face to make.

If there is a bright spot, it is that Obama and the Democrats, to their credit, are willing to break their pledge. They effectively raised future taxes on people making less than $250,000 when they passed the excise tax on high-value health- insurance plans as part of health-care reform, for instance.

Got that? It has two common themes from the prevaricating left: (1) NOW they tell us! (2) We trust Him because He is lying. During the debate on Obamacare there were numerous denials that taxes would be raised on the “middle class.” NOW, it turns out that those claims are inoperative…and the tax increases are actually a feature, not a bug! AND, they are ALL lying! They are “willing to break their pledge” that only the rich will pay increased taxes!…and THAT is a feature now, not a bug!

Unbelievable…the double talk, sophistry, outright lying and slippery bad faith of the left cannot be overstated.

All true. One of the strange phenomena of our time is the fact that liberals trust Obama in large part because they think he is lying. They are right, of course, but the question is: lying to whom?

Via Newsbusters, NOW President Terry O’Neill ignores the First Rule of Holes (stop digging!) and provides another cycle for Republicans to defend Ann Romney and stay-at-home moms.  Instead of leaving bad enough alone, O’Neill appeared on Ed Schultz’ MSNBC show last night and attempted to rewrite Hilary Rosen’s faceplant and keep the attack on Ann Romney for not having a salaried job in the workforce as a means to paint the Romneys as out of touch.  Say, remember when feminism meant supporting the choices of women and defending them from being marginalized and demeaned?  Good times, good times:
